Charles was killed off screen because in 2002 the actor got caught abusing a child and in possession of harmful material depiction a child he was directing and coercing. His acting career shattered after that. Just thought that was worth knowing.

Ya! I get that, and I understand that. What I didn’t understand, is why they found the need to do 100 percent computer animation on the scene when they explain the plane crash and the…over the top shark attack. Wasn’t mom explaining the death to Lydia enough?

Trying to incorporate three different generations of women to tell their stories just distracted from the entire thing and it was weird Lydia would not be in control of her own life considering that Beetlejuice tried conning her in the first film. It makes no sense she’d let some new guy take advantage of her.

It was like 5 movies in one. You could have dumped the bride and nobody would have noticed, as that sub-plot went nowhere. Just a little creative writing to provide motivation for Juice based on the other existing sub-plots to make up for her absence. You could have gotten rid of the police force, too, given that was really a one joke scene, and (again) a little creative writing with the remaining sub-plots and you would have fixed any motivation issues. It was like they couldn't decide which script to go with. OR, they just wrote scenes on the spot. Soul Train? Really? So much screen time for something irrelevant, but the Maitlands could barely get a nod. Its amazing how Lydia is a drug addict and then not, when given all that would happen she'd be poppin' those pills! Nope. So many wasted plotlines.

Different times and mind frames. I remember seeing bettlejuice the first time as a kid and was blown away. And still because of the sentiment of being able to say “when I was your age” I watched this all the time when showing my kids bettlejuice. Now my kids are able to watch both with the same vividness of viewing for the first time. I wonder what the cartoon remake will be like…

15-20 years ago, remakes/sequels that had already begun to HEAVILY sacrifice their originals' own souls, for thinly-disguised but shamelessly-marketed cash grabs, were something that I was DONE with. Now - decades later - it's far, FAR into another era altogether, where (when?) it *_would absolutely BLOW ME AWAY_* if a sequel/remake (to either a cherished classic - or even to just the next in line of tiresomely stupid, fake car movies) wasn't an utter, complete piece of _fucking SHIT._ THIS one was another clear example - from the moment it was publicized. So the next video like this, on another travesty... was not only 100% certain - but also just a short matter of time (basically, until someone SAW it). Alas...

It was fine. For how old burton is, hes still able to bring a great sequel. It will never be the original. The original was a freakish gamble that paid off. We have lived with it for what, 40 years? So of course we can say the sequel isnt as good. IT IS. They all did a great job besides belucci who was only in this because of her relationship to burton.

Agreed. I adore the original movie but this one felt like they just didn't know what to do with it. Bettlejuice himself felt like he was really toned down to, he wasn't as wacky as the original and less adult jokes. Originally he had about 17mins and this worked, maybe we had to much of him this time? I wish they had done a flashback scene at the start, even in the claymation of what happened since the first movie. So we could see the Maitland's finding the loophole and Lydia saying her goodbyes. The "oh we found a loophole" just felt like a quick better put that in and cheap. To many 'Villians' in this movie, its like the writers all had different ideas, couldn't agree with one and just went for all of them. As you said Dolores was underused and gotten rid of to easily, actually all the villains were taken out to easily. Also am I the only person who doesn't want to know BJ's backstory? I like the mystery of not knowing. O'hara again love her but all I saw was Moria from Schetts Creek especially in the gallery scene. I feel like all these sequels they've done years later have been a massive let down :(

I enjoyed the movie and appreciated the nostalgic feel of the film because it reminded me of classic Tim Burton. My biggest criticism of the movie is that there were too many villains. Each one could be its own movie. Jeremy and Delores were good villains and provided a good reason to bring back Beetlejuice, but the manager was the weakest one. I thought Rory had killed Delia by sending her poisonous snakes to keep her from talking Lydia out of the wedding, but that wasn't the case, which was disappointing. Overall, I'll still keep this as a funny Halloween watch, and I'm glad I got to see it in theaters with an audience that also had fun.

Too many plots and the baddies were taken out too easily. Charles Deetz's wanderings in the afterlife could have been taken out without the movie losing anything either. It was both fun, yet somehow cringy and stupid at times too.

There were two movies crammed into one, and it's a total shame. They could have made this film only about establishing the characters and relationships of Astrid, Lydia, Delia, and Jeremy, and the start of the subplot of Delia and Charles (which would lend to keeping Jeffrey Jones out of the project), ending with her dying and looking for Charles. The main plot could have solely been about Astrid's journey with Jeremy being the main villain. Throw in some flashbacks and some afterlife scenes of Astrid's father to establish him as well and make him part of the story. Could have ended with Astrid getting saved by Beetlejuice, Jeffrey getting killed off, Lydia marrying Beetlejuice in return, and Delores getting introduced. The sequel could have then been about Delores hunting down Beetlejuice, the detective investigating the undead murders and tracking Delores down, and Delia eventually finding Charles. Perhaps Astrid's father joins Delores as her lover (or hostage/servant) to tie him into it. Delores could then make a deal with Lydia to free her from Beetlejuice by killing him so she can marry Astrid's father (again) to make him human again. Delores could double-cross Lydia after killing Beetlejuice, keeping the father as a servant or whatever. Then Delia, Charles, and the detective come in to save the day, destroying Delores. Then Lydia marries the father, and Beetlejuice is back to the afterlife with Delia and Charles as his Probation officer(?) for the next 300 years or something. And the Maitlands come back again for a dance party, why not!

You could take your friends and family to this be rated movie and enjoy yourself. Once it goes to Blu-ray and streaming, I will probably go ahead and watch it multiple times. But unfortunately once in the movie theater was more than enough. I could go my whole life never seeing a Beetlejuice baby birthing scene. Let alone twice! It’s just not funny. I also agree that this movie felt very disjointed and had little depth and plot going on. What a waste. But a sequel so long after the original is rarely good. I don’t like when they rehash iconic moments from the OG movie as it just feels lazy and predictable. Bettlejuice’s ex-wife felt very forgettable but also reminded me of the witch from the most recent Hellboy, being chopped up and all.

I've been apprehensive with new movies now and it's a good thing to wait and hold off until this goes to streaming. Kinda bummed though, was hoping this would explain BJ past but it's just another nostalgia cash grab. Nothing against Michael Keaton or the other OG cast but they just looked too old and warn out for these roles again. Studios just need to retire and let these cult classic movies be and let younger writers and directors come up with new ideas. Take a risk for once like how they used to.
