Or maybe they're objecting to England being used in place of Britain or the UK (though this is actually quite common internationally and has been since England really was a separate power).

I understand the typical perspective is 'just let them have it', but the residents are overwhelmingly in favour of British sovereignty, and have been for generations. The fact that a fascist ruler in Argentina suddenly decided to cause trouble; Britain would have had to voluntarily cooperate with/permit the seizure of the islands and allow the people to be placed under his rule. If we're talking about 'claims' for land - for them to just wander into the Islands knowing they're under British control, and designate them and their people as Argentinian property is an act of pure aggression. The islands are stupidly close to South America vs the UK, and I get that. But the simple fact remains that they're ours. That's how it's been for hundreds of years, and that's how it should remain. As a ridiculously trivial example, if you buy a storage unit miles away from your home and it's full of your stuff, then someone comes along and decides it's their stuff because they live closer to it, you'd act on it. This pales in comparison to the responsibility Britain has to ensuring that the people on the island themselves can continue living peacefully, without their Crown throwing them overboard and being complicit in a hostile takeover from a nearby country, just because it's 'easier not to bother'. The loss of life is horrible, but again, Britain is known as the sleeping lion for a reason. At least it was, I don't see much of a spine in our country these days. Nonetheless, I love Canadians and Canada so I always enjoy your videos and perspective. But the Falklands is a sensitive subject for British and Argentinians alike.

It may seem unnecessary on the surface, like a lot of wars do tbh, but british citizens live in the Falklands and when Argentina invaded they faced the prospect of being forced to live under a Fascist regime. Britain fought to get the islands back before discovering the large amount of oil surrounding the islands because even if the islands didn't seem like they're worth much, it was still a matter of protecting the British population there and not letting a fascist dictatorship country walk all over you.

As someone who half my ongoing arguments on KZbin are against the British, the reality is that the British were completely and unequivocally correct on the issue of the Falklands. The Argentines simply have no legitimate claim, the British were there from the beginning, they are the original inhabitants of the islands, there was no native population, they aren't bullying anyone, they were there first, and the Argentines really have no role in this.

There is no native population of the island, it is all colonists, overwhelmingly the British who were among the first to ever inhabit the island, and the British have maintained their claims to the islands for nearly 300 years. My Father was a Senior Officer in Her Majesty's Royal Marine Commandos from 1940 till 1981, before that in 1938 he had joined up and become an Anti Aircraft gun loader, he was lucky and escaped from Dunkirk. Before he knew it he was sent to Scotland and joined what was then just called Commandos. He retired in 1981 after Serving at NATO H.Q. in Brussels, Belgium. Two weeks after he retired he co-signed my paperwork for me to follow in the family tradition by joining Her Majesty's Royal Marine Commandos on my 17th birthday. Making me the youngest of his son's to join the RMC, and my older sister who had joined Royal Military Medical Corp as a ‎Trauma and General Surgeon who operated on me three times in my career. After 32 weeks of basic training, 16 weeks of Arctic and Survival training I was sent with the rest of my Regiment 42 Commando, to the Falkland Islands in 1982, when Argentina invaded the Falklands and other British territories in the South Atlantic. On the 21st of May at 1am we landed at Fanning Head, about 1 to 2 miles from San Carlos in company strength, we had rowed our rubber landing boats to keep the element surprise on our side. After organising in pitch black conditions, we quietly spread out to cover the main landing force from counter attack, and to take out any enemy lookouts. After the main landing force had achieved a successful base of Operations we were relieved. We kitted up at about 4pm, we were carrying about 120lbs per man plus our weapons and ammunition, about 30 more pounds, and we started the 'yomp' (march) to find the enemy. The reason we had to move on foot was because the vast majority of our transport helicopters were lost when the Atlantic Conveyor was sunk, we only had 1 Chinook. After several small engagements, mainly hastily arranged enemy traps or Farm buildings, we joined up with the Gurkha's just south of Mt. Kent. There we had our first hot meal since our insertion. I never knew you could be that exhausted, all of our feet were rotting and split from the thick boggy terrain we had been through in freezing weather, but we had covered between 55 to 60 miles. After a 12 hour rest on freezing rocks, we attacked the south of Mt. Harriet while the Gurkha's launched a fierce attack howling at the Argentinian positions. Oh yeah, so they don't throw a hissy fit, 45 Commando attacked Two Sisters Ridge too apparently. After a few more hours we moved west with the Gurkha's and gave cover support to the Scots Guards attacked the enemy on Mt. Tumbledown, after a vicious gun and hand to hand battle the last of the Argentinian forces retreated to their last defensive positions. Along with the Scots, Gurkha's and some Paras, we then set ourselves ready just south of Sapper Hill and waited for the order to come to finish off the enemy outside Stanley. We could almost taste the relief when they surrendered on the 14th of June after 5 days of exchanges, some very intense. I sat on a pavement in Stanley having my feet treated by a medic while a young girl (about 12) talked my ears off about her favourite books while eating any chocolate I had on me. When 3 of my brothers came and sat beside me. One of my brothers jabbed me in the ribs as we smoked, I felt a sharp pain, the medic checked my ribs and discovered I had been lucky and only received a graze from an enemy bullet. My brother started laughing, and told me I'd finally lost my virginity. After returning back in the U.K. we stayed at our Parents and spent at least a week drinking before re-joining our Regiments. I served in the Royal Marine Commandos and other more specialised groups until 2015 before having my active career ended in Afghanistan. I was retired in 2017 on medical reasons. I now am nearly completely dependant on a wheelchair, but life is still good. I have PTSD and depression. But to make up for it, I have been married to my wife for 38 years, and in love with her since I was 15. We have 4 children and 7 grand children. So life is better than I deserve. As a fighting force and National Military, we had achieved something that no other Western Armed Forces could have under the same extreme operational conditions. By the way, the U.S.A. did not give us any weapons or kind of aid.

In UK the Falklands war is well known and looked on in pride, after all the people who live in Falklands still wanted to remain british so most brits including me our glad we defended them. Though Politically if you look at this in a more cold logic, given the circimstances if we'd just let them have the islands it also likely would be seen as a weakness by other countries, considering the ex empire and the cutting militarty costs thing, so our goverment likely also went to get the Falklands back to basically still show the world that we could still defend ourselves.

There are basic rules involved. One rule is that the Falklands were a democracy and they were invaded by a dictatorship. If the U.K. gave in the theory was it would justify more invasions. The vast majority of the people wished to remain British as in Gibraltar .On the surface it could be said that a country should not own another country thousands of miles away from its shores ,in which case the U.K. America, Spain, France, Portugal and a few other countries should give them up today. The world does not work that way it is very complex. Many wars were without a just cause and the whole concept is pure insanity which means that we are still light years from actually being civilized. Few wars could be said to be justified and WW2 is the only one i can think of now that could be said was justified, though there is the theory that says if the world had one dictatorial leader ie: Adolf Hitler there would be no more war ...cant really see that. So there is a basic choice to become slaves of one country or fight back often with the aid of other countries hence so far the latter has been option no 1. The conclusion is that wars are inevitable and with the invention of nuclear weapons those wars will be considered "small wars" but M.A.D can happen due to the fact that it is possible.

There are plenty of perfectly valid reasons for British action here. It gives Britain a strategic foothold in South America and gives British forces a safe place to rest and resupply. Losing those islands was a national humiliation that couldn't be allowed to go unanswered. The islands were discovered by the British first and thus their claim is legitimate. Far more important than every reason I have stated is that the people there consider themselves British and were being subjugated by a foreign power, this can not be tolerated. The people living there have the right to decide how they want to live and who they want to associate with, not the UN, not Argentina or anybody else. Today the Falkland islands have a booming economy and zero national debt. In fact they have cash reserves, something not many places can boast. They are entirely autonomous apart from foreign policy and defence & have no interest in Argentina playing any role in future governance of their islands. I know from an outside perspective it looks at first glance to just be a petty colonial dispute, but in reality this is a jumped up 3rd rate power trying to divert it's peoples attention from their problems at home by stealing islands that were settled before their nation even existed.

There are over 3000 people in the Falklands. Almost every single one of them are of British origin, and consider themselves British to this day. Not a single one of them are Argentines, and Argentinians have never established a permanent settlement upon them. The Islands belonged to Britain before Argentina ever existed. It is not the distance, but the culture that matters. The people of the Falklands are 100% British and Argentina has nothing to do with it. THIS is why Britain cares. The Falklands are literally British soil. No human habitation on the islands existed before the French, followed closely by the British... And the French sold their claim. The British are truly the indigenous people of the Falklands. It is literally British soil!!!! This is why Britain will shed blood for the Falklands to this day!!

The war was a little before my time so I cannot really comment too much on the motivation behind the war. But Thatcher was not a PM to be pushed around. I like to think it was about protecting the sovereignty of the islands population who wanted to be part of Britain. But realistically it was probably pride. And I suppose the best way of looking at it is imagine you have a lovely house with a nice big garden. There is a shed at the end of the garden. Its old, is like a mile from your house and has nothing of value in it. But its your shed on your land. Someone (a stranger) decides to start living in your shed, at the end of your garden on your private land. Do you say, oh well, I wasn't using it, I'm ok with someone else using my shed on my land? Or do you say get the hell out of MY shed and get off of MY land? And at the end of the day, you are entitled to defend your property if it is unlawfully taken from you. Its also worth mentioning that it took a good while for the British to reach the islands and the whole time they were travelling, Thatcher tried diplomatically to get the Argentines off her islands. Britain did try to get them back without violence.

“Just let them have it” how would you react if someone came into your home and said this is mine now? The islanders were under house arrest and some of them taken away and locked in barns. And the streets and post office was used as a toilet.

I see plenty of comments pointing this out, but I want to throw my own voice in. Here's an Australian's few reasons the Brits absolultely shouldn't have "Let them have the island". 1) The Argies were a military dictatorship that made thousands of their own citizens disapear to maintain power, including 500+ (!) of their own soldiers after the war to try and cover up just how badly they lost. 2) The islanders have the right to self determination and they chose (repeatedly) to remain British. and 3) Any country that can't protect its citizens and territory from foreign despots simply doesn't deserve to exist. Your government exists to protect you, and if it can't even do that than you need to make a new one. Also, the Brits victory wasn't actually as certain as you might think. The strategic challenges of operating so far from home gave the Argies and incredible advantage which they squandered largely through incompetence. If they Argies had held out for just a few days longer the Brits would have run out of fuel and ammo and had no choice but to return home empty handed. Calling it Mike Tyson picking on a twelve year old is not an accurate analogy. It's a bit more like Mike Tyson dashing across a busy four lane highway in the middle of the night to defend a small child from a crackhead with a knife after an exhausting day of training. As an Australian, I think the Brits acted heroically.

As a British person I find it sad how much people insult Argentina for the war, firstly it was a military dictatorship that invaded to keep Argentinians away from thinking about the crimes of their government and most of the Argentinian troops were 18-19 conscripts with very little training who probably didn’t want to be there, but yh if Britain didn’t send a reaction force then the British citizens of the islands would be force under the brutal regime of the dictatorship

Thats why they, the US, didn't or wouldn't try and take it. Surely you can understand that Americans would not want a full out war with a military like UK, a country that also happens to be their oldest and closest ally, simply over a little oil. I'm not even from the West and I even know that USA and UK are both two strong military and both also good friends. I doubt the American government would have the courage to steal British oil because it would lead to conflict. And also, the American citizens like the British citizens too so they would definitely be angry at their own government if it attempted war with Britain over some oil. C'mon gentlemen. Hi, Argentinean here, the war was caused by an US-sponsored military dictatorship, most people didn't want war, only the military government zealots which were a minority. I think my country don't have any right to claim ownership over the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands like they did from 1904 onwards, but we firmly believe the Malvinas/Falklands Islands were Spanish after they bought it from the French, who were the original colonists, not the British who came a year later. The Spaniard government recognized our ownership of the island as inheritance after independence (uti possedetis iure) from the colonial days (just as the UK recognized the Midwest as US territory after losing the usa war of independence even if it wasn't part of the 13 colonies territory). The UK then in 1833 kick out the Argentinean colonists to "retake" the islands, as they see em as theirs; but for us the history is like i said before France (Sold it) > Spain (Lost it during our war of independence) > Argentina (uti possedetis iure recognize by Spain). The islanders right now are the descendants of the British implanted population of 1833, so of course they will vote in British favor, it would not be the same is the original Spaniards, or the 1833 Malvinas province Argentineans voted the same referendum. It's funny that most of the world its against Russia because they annexed Crimea after a similar referendum, with a demographic of Russians living for generations decide to be Russians instead of Ukrainian. Just as this British islanders decide to be British after kicking the Argentineans out and living in the islands for generations.

The war was about self determination. 99.8% of people want to be British not Argentinian. That's it. Argentina was being a bully and if you have the capability to stand up to Bullies you should. Britain certainly had that capability. While the majority of Falkland Islanders (who incidentally are British citizens) want to remain British then the Islands should remain British. If at any point the Islanders want to be Argentinian then the island should become Argentinian. It's not that difficult to understand. Standing up to a vicious military dictatorship is not a bad thing, in fact it is a good thing and should be celebrated as such, and not put down as being stupid as you guys have just done. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

In fact it’s more than offensive it’s insulting and demoralising. “Just let them have the islands” do you think the Argentine Junta was just going to leave us islanders stay and it would be sunshine and rainbows? No they would of kicked us off the island or worse, we would of lost our homes, the places we were raised, the places where our families were born and our parents lived and died. For you to say “just let them have the islands” is insulting not just to us but to the people who have lived and died here. How dare you say that, especially from someone who has probably never had to worry about being displaced from their home or even worse, killed. Thank god the people of the U.K. and Thatcher has more backbone than you and stood up to fascism. I’m usually not one for vulgar language but sincerely, from the bottom of my heart. Fuck You.

It is important to highlight the bravery of the Argentine army with basic military equipment, they did not have a night viewer, they had no food, the Argentine air force used planes without height gauges or guided missiles. On the other hand, the British had the best technology, they had American weapons and they also had the information that Chile gave them. They needed all that help to be able to win a war against a South American country that had nothing. However, the Argentine air force gave them a fight. The Argentine troops knew how to counter the enemy attack. With good technology, any army is good. The challenge is to fight in unequal conditions and still continue standing.
