AAA Games used to be the highlights of their generation. Now it seems those great AAA experiences are few are far between. What happened to them? And is there a solution to this seeming drought of good games? Well...

A lot of people really don’t realize how much shareholders are to blame for the current state of western AAA games, theyre the ones who keep pushing for buzzwords like AI, get employees fired, etc all to make short term profit. Huge part of why indies will always be higher quality as games, they don’t have to answer to shareholders and appeal to them.

Notice most of the really good triple A games come from Privately Owned companies like Larian, or Fromsoft.

It's like the big corps can't even comprehend the simple fact that the more passion the project has the higher chance people are willing to play their games and hence making them more money, it's a win win situation..

@ResetButton12 they get most of their money from sharesholders. Companies aim to please them and advertise themselves as "safe for investment" and this standards are set up by Blackrock. So really these company profit, just not from the customers.

I think the same could be said for movies, music, shows, and literature. All these industries have long since been dominated with most of the same greedy practices affecting gaming. Pushing for independent/alternative media is good.

Once I managed to quit a live service game. I learned my lesson and vow to never spend a penny or dollar on any micro transactions. Live service need to begone and I have cast my vote. As for Minecraft, Terraria, and Stardew, they are like unicorn. They fit into a sandbox category where the developer have to spend years or even over a decade. And just like live service, they still need a constant support from consumers to continue minus the things that keep consumers pay like micro transactions and battle pass. Game like that are some of the most difficult to make and AAA company tend to avoid them like plague (while ironically they have no shy to spend hundreds millions chasing live action FPS).

AI shouldn't be (and probably won't be) used to generate assets from scratch, but rather increase the amount of detail on the assets already created by a human. "Finishing touches" so to say. This may kinda relieve a burden of the constantly increasing fidelity without hurting the artistic vision too much. It's not like I personally need high fidelity of course, I don't. I've been playing almost exclusively indie games for the last 5 years.

What we need now more than anything is to have a deep game library. Like the PS1/PS2 That has all sorts of different game genres/designs. 90s-00s gaming had such a vast range of creativity. I love the amount of risk they took on odd concepts in This Y2K era- the Dreamcast/PS2/360. It should show us that GRAPHICS are not the most important thing.. If you can create satisfying movement, gameplay mechanics, physics effects, responsive parts of a environment that makes you want to explore it, engage it, etc. That stuff is so much more important. Not: {"Who can make the largest game map? Or have the most reflections?"} I think Art style, design, vibe, aesthetic is much more important. You don't need top notch graphics to greatly appreciate and enjoy playing a game. That's why we are seeing such a resurgence of players who have gone back to playing older games because they realized the aspects of gaming that they care about and are unhappy with most modern games. So hopefully gaming will enter a new era. That mixes in aspects of the older era's. With our modern capabilities that will hopefully help make it easier to create a satisfying game (without it taking 8 years to build a broken game. Hopefully) Currently everything is trying to be like a Triple AAA game or a free to play online battle Royale game.. A lot of us miss when we had game selection similar to how the Dreamcast/GameCube/360/PS2 era had a mix of. As well alot of those games came with options for local multiplayer, split screen, LAN parties, or offline modes against bots or other diverse offline CPU game modes. Yet modern games are not only lacking those dynamic options that give games nearly endless replayability features... Modern games are lacking even meeting the most basic standards for game's... They don't seemed focused on the core of the games to be Fun. They over focus on "realism" Rather than adding in Artistic adaptations for the greater good of gaming as a whole.. We could be doing so much better yet people are just coming out with the most bland game design, braindead AI, less care for physics effects... We could be doing so much better than this..

AAA games has been bad for many years. Day 1 patch, bugs, glitched achievements/trophies and very unbalanced. Even updates many times break games more than fixing em. IMO AAA games were alot better pre ps4/xbox one.

I think we need to redefine what AAA actually means. Especially with games production cost rising I don't think there are AA games anymore per actual definition. Also GTA VI costing estimated $2 Billion is it still AAA or quadruple A? Is the 5th reskin of an Assassin's Creed game really a AAA game or is it its own category now? Also I there is a bit of a bias in these discussions towards hating the current state. It is simply because you are aware of actual events, you are aware of the bad, mid and good games, but when you look in the past you tend to remember only the good stuff, and maybe the worst of the worst. But all the mediocre and bad stuff, you simply just forgot. There were many many cash grab games on ps1, ps2, ps3 as well. I'm sure in 10-20 years we will look back with appreciation how MANY great games we had these days. I would even say we live in the best era of gaming atm.

We surely live in a gaming golden age, but its actually the indie scene who is carrying it out. More and more single or small groups of people are able to get the tools and the knowledge to make their dream game happens, and you can see that happening. The sony and microsoft showcases was really boring, while the latinoamerican games showcase showed some of the most interesting upcoming ideas for the next years.
