Chris Stuckmann is a good guy, and I hope he is successful in fulfilling his dream as a film maker, but his channel isn't fun to watch anymore. There was so much passion and love in every video. I even loved the Halloween specials he did with his wife. Now he's just mundane, because his fear of being rejected by producers is so great. I think he feels bad bashing people because he now understands the movie-making process, but that shouldn't stop him from critiquing.

When Chris's Madame Web video appeared on my Home page a couple weeks ago, I clicked on it, thinking that maybe he was actually going to do a critical review. After watching a minute or two, I saw that wasn't the case and turned it off. I then realized that, though I still subscribed to his channel, I hadn't watched a video from him in quite a while. Seeing a Chris Stuckmann thumbnail was all I needed to know about his thoughts on the movie (i.e. he liked it); I'd rather spend my time seeing what other people thought. And so, I unsubscribed from Chris that day. It wasn't in protest or to "punish" him. I just realized that I had no use for a movie review channel that didn't actually review movies.

"I clicked on it, thinking that maybe he was actually going to do a critical review" - so you dropped him because his opinions was not what you wanted it to be? you can just record yourself and listen to it again and again. why would you want to listen to someone else? Madame web was bad. that's it. the whole internet is talking about it in the same angle. Chris talked about it from a different angle. Hollywood has become commodified. art has become commodity. the art aspect has been reduced, it happens when artists need to please the shareholders. Chris talked about it. what's so wrong with it? I guess if Chris was speaking like every other critic next door, the things we want to hear, he wouldn't have lost so many subscribers. much like Hollywood and the audience itself today. we want to see different stories, different/ new IPs, different perspectives. but as soon as holywood throws it at us, it becomes a box office failures. Chris should have talked about us audience too. how we have become zombies. whenever we will see a Marvel/spiderman tag we will throw our money.

He said that his channel is now a “film appreciation” channel, and won’t talk negatively about films. Funny, because I had a class in 10th grade conveniently called “Film Appreciation”, and even we talked negatively about film sometimes. Also, he thinks that studio interference is the reason why a movie is bad. So are we just going to ignore movies that had no studio interference & still sucked, or movies that were even good because studio “interfered”?

One thing I've just realised about Chris, it's evident back when he made his video about his Jehovah's Witness past, I think it explains perfectly this anti-negativity anti-criticism mentality over the last few years now, it was staring me right in the face and only now have I just noticed this, to put it in simple words.... Chris Stuckmann is very sensitive soul, I know it sounds weird but it makes sense when you think about it, it's very clear he's someone who cares about what people think about him and he wants people to like him, this probably comes from him growing around the type of people he was once associated with who told him what to do and what not to do and how other people reacted to him and this lifestyle, and he desperately wants to change this around and rectify it.

@@dboygamer8184Are you sure he's just not acting like a KZbinr? When you make a film you get a whole new insight into just how tough it is to make films. I'm a filmmaker and the idea of a critic resorting to "this is a PEEPING PILE OF GARBAGE" is just outright fucking dumb. It's lower common denominator shit. Idiots being either SUPER HAPPY or SUPER ANGRY towards a film. No one talking about what the film is trying to say. The punchline to the joke is that there's no such thing as a good or bad film. It's not a thing that's possible. It's literally a subjective medium and good and bad are objective terms i.e. they cannot exist in the format.
@Mopark25
@Mopark25 6 ай бұрын
@@TheFlash-rh2elOf course there's good and bad films. There are objective rubrics with which we can measure quality, even in art. That's how I can say No Country For Old Men is objectively better than The Room. We can do mental gymnastics to say "But I think Tommy Wiseau is a better actor than Tommy Lee Jones, it's subjective!" And I can point to objective measurable qualities of Jones performance, such as pacing, line delivery, abiltiy to emote, etc What do you think they teach in acting classes? If everything is subjective then there's no framework with which to improve, right? How's a teacher going to instruct if they can't determine what's good and bad? I do agree with the rest of your post, films should be judged on what they're trying to achieve. But even that's measurable. We can disagree on the measurement, but you'll have to argue for that, and you do so by logical assessment. And no amount of argumentation is going to convinve anyone that The Room is a better film than No Country. Hence, objectively better.
@TheFlash-rh2el
@TheFlash-rh2el 6 ай бұрын
@@Mopark25 As far as your comment goes, it is civil, which is rare for KZbin, so thank you. The issue with film being subjective is that I can use the subjective of the creator of the film - or one of the creators - whenever a person tries to use a film's reception as a reason for it to be known as good/bad. There can be a beautifully shot, edited, scored, acted, directed film that's morally bad. What then? Usually the technicals mean nothing in comparison to the moral decay that's on display during the film's screening. And, because film is subjective, I have to say "usually." As far as The Room Vs NCFOM goes: it's your word against Tommy Weisau's and it would only end in a draw. As far as the rest of the world goes, unless you can get me 7 billion opinions - and those opinions stay the same until all of those people are dead - it won't matter.

@@JayVaters also I think you made a great point in bringing up Roger Ebert. Because Stuckman looked up to him so much, I mean he literally did a tribute when he died over 10 years ago now. Ebert had a great relationship with Scorsese, and Spielberg, yet that didn’t stop him from criticizing their work and I need harshly. And Ebert himself was involved with the screenplay for beyond Valley of the dolls the Russ Mayer movie, yet that didn’t stop Gene Siskel from absolutely tearing that movie to shreds and giving it his absolute lowest rating. So it seems like Stuckman doesn’t understand the importance of criticism and especially negative criticism. And I can say from my own experience I think negative criticism really helped me, I would’ve never learned proper punctuation or how to read and write without my English teacher harshly critiquing me. I think what’s really going on is that Chris does not handle criticism very well but as we’ve seen, and so he feels that he would be hypocritical to criticize other filmmakers for their work when he himself he can’t take criticism. And there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have a more positive outlook when doing film criticism. I think Austin Burke and Sean Chandler are perfect examples of that.

in the mid 2010s there were attempts to bring expensive television style productions to the world of online film analysis. Turned out that the people who attempted that much growth were overreaching a bit. No trouble. The online film community soldiers on. When those shows like Collider were a thing though, it was inevidably the case that the on camera talent had producers in their ear, restricting what they could and couldn't say. Not a good thing by any mreans, but it's the nature of a larger production. Did that detail about these productions really warrent Red Letter Media doing there whole Nerd Crew thing, where they repeatedly commited 20 plus minute acts of unadulterated mean spiritedness, punching down at people less popular than them? I only bring that up because I never knew or cared about the personal lives of the guys behind RLM but it was when I saw that that I started to take for granted that they must all be single and childless. (though that's just an assumption and I could be wrong) Sure it's fun to have countless strangers who don't know or really care about you validate that sort of thing, but do you want any child of yours to see you act that way?

I first found him in late 2015 when I found his review of "Pan", and I subscribed him shortly thereafter. I watched almost all reviews he came with afterwards, and would also stumble on older ones. His hilariocity reviews were among the best though. Then I noticed a shift that to me, actually began in late 2019, when The Rise of Skywalker came out - I think the thing that bugged me was that he seemed insincerer, like both his face and his voice did not match what he was actually saying. Anyway, I would then say that the biggest shift came in early 2021, during the corona winter, when he made that video on why he (understandably) left JW, also because his sudden coming out as pansexual came rather completely out of nowhere. Later that year, he then came with the video on his upcoming movie and the announcement that he never would do a negative review again. At first, I could kinda see where he was coming from, also because I myself helped make a short film in university - but the more I thought about it, the less sense it made to me. And I noticed from then on that his reviews became....boring. Like they didnt even say anything. And that not!review of Madame Web just seemed so ridicculous and pretentious at this point, and I think I lost the remaining respect I had for him then.

One thing I think people aren't seeing is Stuckmann is still giving honest opinions on the movies he chooses to talk about. If you watch any of his recent videos he does in fact raise negative issues with aspects of movies he discusses. The main thing that seperates him from most other reviewers is his choice to not talk about movies that he doesn't like or have any interest in, because that isn't what he enjoys doing. In the case of Madame Webb, he doesn't deny that the movie is bad but he focuses on issues he calls out with Sony and other Hollywood producers. There are plenty of videos from other KZbinrs criticing the movie and he chose to add to the conversation rather than repeat what so many others had already said

If he better understands how film making works that means he should be able to more correctly and more nuanced criticize movies. Criticism doesn't mean dragging something in the mud. I'm a former actor. Just because I know how hard acting is doesn't I now shouldn't criticize acting. No, instead, becauase I know how acting works I'm actually more critical. Not negative. But I can criticize with way more knowledge and nuance. Without criticism people won't be able to learn and grow and make better movies.

i kinda find chris pretentious but at the same time disagree with this hate against him. yeah you’re right its lame to be a review channel and not give negative criticism and his channel is falling, but at the same time if this is what he wants to do, he should do it. he doesnt owe you anything, if he’s lost the passion for his past style of videos, he shouldn’t have to do it. also you can’t both accuse him of sucking up to studios and also only criticizing the studio and not the filmmaker of madame web. also youre complaining that he only makes youtube videos now for income and not passion, but you’re literally using his name to drive views to this dragged out 20 min video? let’s be real you’re not passionate enough about this subject to want to make a video about it for any other reason than capitalizing on his clout. you’re acting like he’s robbed you of something you enjoy, there’s so many other channels out there bashing movies, you’re not being denied anything, you have no emotional investment in this other than wanting to milk the drama involving a channel bigger than yours. you’re really gonna pretend he was doing a public service by negatively reviewing movies and without that the people won’t know whether to spend money and time seeing a movie? gtfo to be clear i’m no lover of stuckmann, i think it’s so pretentious that he brings up the fact he made a movie at every single opportunity and i fully expect Shelby Oaks to be terrible. but at least he is doing what he cares about and has more integrity than people like you.

They make a living critiquing movies. Just because you don’t like someone, someone’s opinions, or someone’s presentation style, doesn’t make them not a “real critic“.

I'm not familiar with Kermode, will check him out I guess. Most critics nowadays exaggerate points in a film to exploit their opinion for more validity. Jeremy does this a lot, and I like his videos. He will take this one moment or story bit and criticize the hell out of it and then I'll watch the film and think, wtf is he talking about. A perfect example of this would be his review of Iron Claw.

You want to ruin him because he made one video not wanting to bash Madam Web? It wasn't a good movie, but there were a lot of anti-woke people trashing the movie. Maybe that's why Stuckman didn't want to criticize Madam Web because he didn't want to be a part of the hate. And that probably led him to not want to negatively critique movies anymore. I doubt it has much to do with kissing up to producers.

I don’t have a problem with it. Once you actually start creating stuff yourself, in my experience, you inevitably become less critical of other artists. For starters, you gain a good deal more insight (usually realizing just how fucking hard it is to produce anything that is good) and now have to contend with the notion that your own work is going to be judged now. I use to be far more opinionated about and would shit on other musicians and comic books, as a form of recreation, before I attempted to make my own music and comics. It may prove tricky for Stuckman to try and have his cake and eat it to, but I hazard to guess that he’d greatly prefer to be a filmmaker than a KZbin critic, so he’s probably hoping to be less concerned about his channel dipping at some point in the future. Right now, he’s obviously trying to hedge his bets as his first film could be a complete bust, but there’s only so much he can do. And he may genuinely have come to have a change of hearts regarding being overtly negative about films he doesn’t like, and it’s perfectly fine for someone to change and mature over time. Sure, the timing is a bit convenient, but that doesn’t mean that his filmmaking endeavor is his only reason. He may legitimately just not want to put out as much negative content anymore. I’m fine with that.

You made a 22 minute video called "The Fall of Chris Stuckmann", and you're really gonna come in at 19:52 saying you think he's "probably a real nice guy", like it just excuses the other 21 minutes of you slagging on him for being successful doing what he's always wanted. Bless your heart.

People still treating him like a film critic is the problem. He stopped. He said so. He's a filmmaker now. Any "reviews" that pop up are just movies he likes and wants to talk about.

I used to watch Stuckmann years ago because I wanted short and spoiler free reviews, but something about him always bothered me. I think he always felt kind of fake to me (the laughter was always fake and forced) and RLM situation really showed how prickly he is/was.

What really pissed me off more about Chris Stuckmann was his review for Dial of Destiney. I have no F'in idea how he doesn't hammer down how awful that movie was unlike Jeremy Jahns. I got attacked by his fans for stating my concerns for that movie on IG and this was the same guy who took issues with Crystal Skull.

I don’t think Stuckman only making positive reviews is bad, it’s just that he makes positive reviews on bad movies for clickbait He also has a clear conflict of interest being a person who both make movies and critiques movies too (he needs studios to give him opportunities to make his movies)

I totally agree with you one every point in this video. I also un-subscribed. BUT, you say it yourself, he can do whatever he wants with his channel. And you’re right. One should never do KZbin based on what someone else wants. And people change through the years. So do we as subscribers. He changed. It’s up to us if we want to follow him with the change or not. I jumped off but I still respect him for what he did 👍

If anyone asked why the video had to be long, it’s because the KZbin algorithm if people watch the whole video for about 10 minutes or more then more likely to pop up in recommendation, feed, etc.

It’s crazy because his channel was one of the first I followed, when I first caught on to KZbin. And I have fond memories of his past videos. However, once he became “woke” and got on his soap box about criticizing bad movies, I quickly unsubscribed. It sucks because he used to provide great criticisms, that sparked intelligent debates in the comment section.

A guy says he wants to move away from negative movie review content and stops making negative movie content. A dude whose whole channel is negative(your channel) makes a video criticizing a content creator who simply doesn't want to make negative content anymore. You don't see how stupid this is? Aren't people allowed to grow and change? They need to always be the same, always stick to the same views? Keep being a Drama/ negative film channel. You can do whatever you want and cleary there is a audience for it, but its what you want to do, stop going after people for doing something different. Be your own person, and stop getting mad at others for changing.
