DELPHINE DESCENDS
After her family is killed and her homeworld occupied, young Kathreen Martin is sent to the distant world of Furoris for re-education. She will live the rest of her life as a serf - to be bought and sold as a commodity of the Imperial Network.
When her only chance of escape is ruined, a chance mistaken identity offers her a new life as the orphaned daughter of a First-Citizen Senator and heiress to a vast fortune.
She vows to claw her way into power to sit among the worlds’ elite. Then, with her own hands, she will reap bloody vengeance on them all.
But to beat them, she must play their game. And she must play it better than them all.
BLACK MILK
Prometheus has the chance to bring his wife back from the dead, but doing so will mean the destruction of Earth.
Spanning time, planets and dimensions, Black Milk draws to a climactic point in a post-apocalyptic future, where humanity, stranded with no planet to call home, fights to survive against a post-human digital entity that pursues them through the depths of space.
Five lives separated by aeons are inextricably linked by Prometheus’s actions:
Ystil.3 is an AI unit sent back in time from the distant future to investigate Prometheus’s discovery...
The mysterious Lydia has devoted her life to finding a planet that the last remaining humans can call home…
Tom Jones (he’s a HUGE fan!) is an AI trapped inside a digital subspace, lost and desperate to find his way back to his beloved in real-time…
Dr Norma Stanwyck is a neuroscientist from 24th Century Earth whose personal choices ripple throughout time...
Prometheus must learn the necessity of death or the entire universe will be swallowed by his grief.

This is a great series! I read it first in college and just didn't get it. But, now, re-reading it in my 40s, I recognize what a talent Dan Simmons has, and what a great universe he created. I've since been working through the rest of his books. He is interesting because of the diverse array of genres he writes in.

I enjoyed The Fall of Hyperion even more than Hyperion. A lot of my favorite aspects of the series were either introduced or expanded upon in this book such as The Void Which Binds, the TechnoCore factions, the Ultimate UI and the Human UI, the Ousters, Sol's encounter with the Shrike, and the Rachel and Moneta ending. This is my favorite in the series and a top 5 book of all time!

Just finished, enjoyed immensely. My confession: some of the poetry felt like it was falling on deaf ears, I don't think i'm practiced enough to really appreciate what Dan saw in it

I read FOH when I was bed ridden fresh out of the hospital, and during that bleak time I really needed an escape that would be mind blowing and emotionally rewarding. It really nailed it. Even without the Canterbury tale style that I loved in the original novel, it was so satisfying and I felt so sad to be done

It is mind blowing isn’t it. Yet to read anything the equal of Hyperion Cantos. Some get pretty close though.

@@Sci-FiOdyssey Have you read Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun? Wolfe does something similar with human evolution as the Cantos.

I stumbled across your channel recently and really enjoy your content so far. I'm slowly making my way backwards in time through your content. =) Any plans to do Simmons' Ilium and Olympos? I enjoyed them just as much as the Hyperion series. In fact, you've inspired me to re-read both the Hyperion saga and the Ilium / Olympos books yet again as it's been years since I last blew through them. Cheers!

I really think that Dan Simmons is somewhat overlooked. His concepts of the far future rank right up there with Ian Banks and Alastair Reynolds. He does write fiction in the horror genre as well so maybe due to that, he flies a bit under the radar of SF fans - I'm not sure. But given the quality of the Hyperion series, I do want to try some of his horror. I've had my eye on The Song of Kali for what must be decades now!

The Song of Kali is a pretty quick read, but as I'm not particularly a fan of horror and I was just coming out of my Hyperion Cantos high expecting some more sci-fi, I found it pretty unsettling. Aside from that I've only read Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons, I think I liked it more than The Song of Kali, but it's more fantastic than horror.

In my opinion he writes horror just as well. SOng of Kali is a great read and... well let's just say intense. Carrion Comfort and The Terror are two more I would recommend.

I'll have to read it again. I barely remember anything you described. I skipped through most of the "Rise of Endymion" because it seemed incredibly boring, while still picking up enough to understand the point with the Ousters at the end.

Someone wrote that Hyperion was great because of the writing and Fall of Hyperion was not nearly as good and not worth bothering with. I actually liked Hyperion but it is really just a character introduction with long backstories. Then I read Fall of Hyperion and the story turned to crap. I am not talking about the writing, I mean the story. Characters connected to some kind of tree or plant or whatever. Dumb fantasy. If I had any idea about the story in Fall I never would have read Hyperion.

Hiya not sure what comment you’re referring to as I don’t as rule remove comments. I’m happy to attribute any artwork however if you let me know which you’re referring to. The majority of my artwork is from stock images and any other I try to attribute where I can find the original source.
