I'm so glad you enjoyed this! This is one of my top few science fiction books, along with God Emperor of Dune and Fall of Hyperion. Speaking of which, you're going to love Fall. Even though the very end perhaps isn't the most brilliant thing in the world, the majority of the book is devoted to giving incredibly satisfying answers to all of the questions that were raised in the first book, and many of them are very clever and interleave in incredibly interesting ways.

For me the stories go: 1. Priest 2. Poet 3. Detective 4. Scholar 5. Consul 6. Soldier It is my favorite book and it has been since the very moment I finished it. The Fall of Hyperion has some issues (that I hope are resolved in the next two books, have not read those yet) but the plot twists in there are INSANE.

Bro are you people serious? Sounds like a bunch of Lapis Lazuli to me. Dan's writing is piss poor. He has some interesting ideas and some good twists and turns but the writing is super incoherent. The style is horrendous. The prose is poor af. He's so bad at making up names even when there is already a cool thing he'll bastardize it and make it 100x worse. Cyberpunk is cool. Cyberpuke sounds idiotic.

I love Hyperion to death and back, and, personally, I thought Fall of Hyperion was even better! It has a very different structure. Anyway Mike, speaking of Hyperion's influence on sci-fi, it's had a great influence on Red Rising (per Pierce himself and through observation). Red Rising spoilers beyond, for the whole series: 1. A subset of humans who left society and lived out in the void, now returning to invade after having evolved to better fit zero-g and vacuum. (Ascomanni vs Ousters) 2. Age rejuvenation therapy that extends life and causes blue-purple veins to appear on the patient. (Poulsen Treatment in Hyperion, also present in Red Rising à la Volsung Fa) 3. Mistakes of old earth lead to a new society that operates on romantic ethical codes/cultural influences from humanity's past to avoid fucking up everything again, also: starting a new calendar from the time of the revolution or whatever 4. Tech oriented subset of humans who are super weird in the real world and are used to the speed at which they can communicate when 'plugged in' (Blues in Red Rising, essentially, versus cyberpuke in Hyperion) 5. One of the characters being a poet; verse, song, classical instruments and the trappings of classic literature having an influence on the culture of the world and the narrative in a futuristic scifi setting (Roque vs Martin Silenus) 6. I'm pretty sure Kassad describes some Iron Rain-esque attack on Bressia? Other stuff I thought of while reading and cannot recall for the life of me. Thought you might find this interesting! Anyway, great video as always!

Hyperion? More like HYPErion. This is the most important book for me ever, I read it the first time when I was 10, I might've been a bit too young to fully understand everything but the world and genre switching and especially the characters took hold of me, that was around 25 years ago and I'm still obsessed with the first two books. Hyperion is a true 10/10 scifi masterpiece. EDIT: I don't remember what story was my favorite as a kid but now as an adult Martin Silenus' story is my favorite, just amazing, what a character! I really hope they'll cast Danny DeVito to play Martin in the upcoming film adaptation. He has the charisma Martin has and Frank Reynolds proves he's willing to go all in and that's what that character needs.

The scholar's story is by far my favorite one in the book. It's horribly tragic, and something that I don't think could be retold in a better way. Hyperion is tied with Dune for my favorite fantasy book. I'm about halfway though rereading The Fall of Hyperion, since I had such a good time rereading Hyperion. I absolutely hated it the first time, but its not as bad this time around. It's definitely the worse of the two first ones, but it's not nearly as bad as I originally thought.

Scholar's tale blew me away back in the early 90s - I remembered there were really personal moments in that part, and I thought, it was just theoretical/fictional , but instructive. Fast forward 12 years and I'm sitting in a hospital, about to be told my 2 year old daughter is dead in an accident. (sorry for the downer ) and one of my thoughts is "Holy shit, I'm stuck in a shitty situation like Sol Weintraub, and this is real" The courage of the character to push on when all hope was lost - that helped. Its sci fi but i dont think anybody has captured the tragedy of the death of a child better. Having read Hyperion actually made me a better more resilient person

Good review, I agree totally. There really is something for everyone here, even though the narrative style may turn some people off, it likely will pull just about anyone in. The Scholars Tale was absolutely brilliant and heart wrenching. Priests Tale is my second favorite as well; brutal. I’m currently blowing through Fall of Hyperion like I did with the first-it’s more of a straightforward narrative, but it’s awesome. Unless something majorly crashes into the shithouse at the end, I’ll definitely be reading the Endymion cycle. Never been huge on science fiction, but this has completely sucked me in. It’s been almost a year and so much of the first book has remained vividly in my head. Definitely my favorite Simmons I have read

Endymion and Rise of Endymion, were somewhat predictable on a personal and plot level for me. I mean I knew the final thing halfway through. I found Raul and his personal struggles to not be compelling at all. Aenea... Blegh. The revelation at the end was mediocre spirituality and postmodernism, mixed with Plato-Punk realizations of transcendent principles. Which you can get from some yoga classes, a cursory understanding any western religion at all, a couple tabs and a summer during college. Not very deep. I did like the mechanics though. Interesting things about time and space, if not a very interesting use of it.

I actually didn't care for Martin Silenus too much after the first book, but after finishing the series he became my favorite character. Could you help me understand why it's held in such high regard? Compared to Hyperion, Ender's Game felt like a juvenile book, devoid of any big ideas. A solid scifi to be sure, but nowhere near the levels of Dune or Hyperion. Am I missing something? Should I reread it?

I have to disagree. Short stories that seemed to have no connection to each other. Some rather felt like padding. I liked the teacher story and the priest story, all the rest were crap for me. Hated the non ending. Basically a 5.5/10 max. Maybe the next book brings it together and you get a reward for managing to get through it all but this book is just a hard read and not a particularly enjoyable one. I get it’s rated because it has many tales in it nd potential is there to have the shrike more prominent and powerful. Just wasn’t enough of it in this book for me.

Huh... I’m not really into sci-fi, but this does actually sound interesting! The different tales make it seem kind of less intimidating, thick as it is.

You should not read Hyperion without having Fall of H right there, i see them as one book. my favorite scifi novel of all time, Love Dune, but Hyperion i coukdnt get it out of my head for a long time.

I 100% agree on the sex scenes lol. I audio book it so I can listen all day at work, the narrators voice doesn't help the situation at all. I was laughing through most of it, then praying no one walked into my office.

Finished yesterday. Very interesting but agreed Dune is going to be really hard to top and I don't see this series doing it. Regarding the sex scenes. I would guess he was going for a PG 13 rather than R. It is a lot different writing them than showing 10 seconds in a movie. I can see why it was done to show Siri's aging but a lot of it felt awkward.

And they are gone: ay, ages long ago These lovers fled away into the storm. That night the Baron dreamt of many a woe, And all his warrior-guests, with shade and form Of witch, and demon, and large coffin-worm, Were long be-nightmar'd. You could see how Keats could not only influence Simmons…but Lovecraft as well.

I mentioned in Hyperion vid previously that I grabbed a Keat's poetry book to read along with the book. Opened my eyes to poetry. Have you tried the Culture Series? 3rd never got over the 3rd book (the use of weapons). That is top quality stuff. Also, didn't know Hyperion was a series when I read it.
@necaacen
@necaacen 2 жыл бұрын
use of weapons is immense, one of the best sci fi books ever. imo the best book of the culture series, tho theyre all pretty good tbh. i was the same, i read hyperion and thought wow, what a weird way to do a sci fi book. i liked it, found the end bizzare but hey, its this collection of short stories, canterbury tales, and this ties them in within a world, neat idea and some of the stories were great. ...and then years later i found out there was a fall of hyperion, and that actually its just 1 book the publisher split in 2, so i had read half a book lol... fall of hyperion is berserk, what a great book.

The idea of a normally stoic Kassad, sitting their and grimly describing his coital adventures with Moneta to the other pilgrims in detail that borders on pornographic, is mildly tickling to me.

After Rise of Endymion, I'm hoping to get into Dan Simmons' Ilium and Olympos which is his Greek-inspired sci-fi.
@alexisdumas84
@alexisdumas84 3 жыл бұрын
I would personally recommend it not reading those. I read them both and while I greatly enjoyed Ilium and there was a lot of promise in it, Olympos was a horrible confusing mess of unfulfilling and unnecessary plot lines that crowded out the original ones and essentially forced the entire story to end without resolving almost anything.

I'm nervous about your read of Fall of Hyperion, my fear is that you have such high expectations, that maybe this next one won't do it for ya. I, myself loved it. But it's a different reading experience than the first. Just as Endymion is completely different

About 5 years ago, a friend began reading this book, and after hearing about it, I decided to give it a try. It was pretty good. I liked most of the individual tales, however I found the consul's tale boring except for the very end of it. And, I wasn't fond of the detective's tale either. The scholar's story was the one that I liked the most. I had intended to read the next book, but I haven't so far.
