Hi from Malaysia 🇲🇾 to my fellow families in Phillipines, all over the Malay Archipelago and not forgetting the people of the Austronesia world. Nice research, nice pictures, nice clip. Salamat 😊. As a person who was born in Melaka itself, u did your research well. I believe this particular video will eventually become one of the reason the people of this region unite, how bout that. Because if you can read Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia, previously for a very long time, Malaysian and Indonesian always fight a lot because of the border made by the british and dutch. But after discovery of so many things of our past, we eventually realize that we are undeniably the same people (of course not all, many still denies that and like to pick a fight lol). But I truly hope the same for the Phillipines. Lets keep educating. After found your channel, i already told my friends in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei about precolonial Phillipines and how closely related we are. They are also super excited. To be honest, for obvious reasons i guess (colonization aftermath and politics) i dont think we have much information about our relationship not much than just fellow ASEAN members. Thank you again. Keep up the good work.

The legacy of Malacca Sultanate is the Malay language that spread through entire archipelago. At the time when Indonesia get independece, the country chose Malay as national language, not Javanese. Though Javanese is the largest ethnicity (45%), they compromize and chose Malay instead, that its native speaker is only less than 5% but the language is already used as lingua franca for hundred years by the diverse ethnicity inhabiting the archipelago. The Malay dialect that Indonesia chose as national language is Bazaar Riau Malay because it is the simpler version of already simple language: Court Riau Malay. Court Riau Malay is very identical with Johor Malay from Malaysia (and also spoken by Singaporean Malay). Today four Indonesian provinces (Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, & Bangka Belitung Islands) has unique situation that is: Court Riau Malay/Johor Malay, once official language, now used as local regional language for daily conv. Bazaar Riau Malay (Bahasa Indonesia) now as national language. Great video kuya, Im learning many things from that, cant wait to see your next one, greetings from 🇮🇩 mabuhay 🙂

Malay language had spread across the archipelago long before Malacca came into being. The ancestral land of Malay civilization (and the language) is not in Semenanjung (Malacca) but in Sumatera and Java, as evident by numerous inscriptions and Candi across both islands. And while it's true Malay language has become a lingua franca in the archipelago for thousand years, there had never been one standard until (at least) the 19th century. Every place formed their own dialect and many of them are not even mutually inteligible to one another. It also true Bahasa Indonesia came from Malay language, but not exactly direct. It's indeed rooted specifically from the 19th century Riau-Lingga dialect of Bahasa Melayu called *Bahasa Melayu Tinggi* (not Bazaar Riau Malay). Using the literary works by Raja Ali Haji as its basis, this specific dialect in 1850s was adopted by Dutch Colonial Government, latinized (Bahasa Melayu still use Jawi at the time), expanded, and used it as an official linking language widely across Dutch East Indies. It's this "mixed language" of Malay and Dutch that 70 years later became Bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia is the first standardization and modern form of Malay language after thousand of years. Indonesian writers and poets have produce literary works in Latin Bahasa Indonesia since early 20th century. In the later half of 1960s after the Konfrontasi ended, Malaysia asked Indonesia's help in modernizing their own Bahasa Melayu. At the request of PM Malaysia at the time, Indonesia sent many teachers to Malaysia to teach in bahasa (Bahasa Indonesia). In early 1970s a forum of Indonesia and Malaysia called MBIM (later MABBIM with the inclusion of Brunei) was formed. Their task is to formulate a standard/modern Bahasa Melayu to be use in education, law, and administration in Malaysia and Brunei. This modern version from MABBIM is known as Bahasa Melayu BAKU or Bahasa Melayu Standard. _(The word _*_BAKU_*_ comes from Javanese word means standard - more or less)_ However, in the process for over 40 years, the modern Bahasa Melayu loans even more from Bahasa Indonesia Baku which leads to the many similarities between the two languages in standard form we see today.

Riau was once part of Johor, the Riau Sultanate was founded by Johor's younger brother. There was no mention that Riau uses a separate variant of standard Malay from Johor. Even Raja Ali Haji, the so called modern father of Indonesian language is from Selangor.

That is false claims, Malay language never become lingua franca outside Malacca. It was Malacca during this time the Malay language spread out not in the era of Srivijaya. The reason Indonesia used Malay language not because it was lingua franca but rather the Dutch used Malay as official language in the time Dutch East Indie especially Batavia and again due to Malacca role of International port in the region.

The Portuguese walked into an empty City of Malacca in the morning of 24th August 1511. Malaysia only regained her independence 446 years and 7 days later. The first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj mentioned this a few days before 31st August 1957.

History books said that the Sultanate of Malacca fell to the Portuguese due to inferior weapons.This fact was later rebutted with new findings that Malacca's defence units were also well equipped with ballistic weapons equal to the European invaders.Traitors was the main factor that caused the fall of the Sultanate.It was informed that the gate to the city was opened by these traitors allowing the Portuguese to enter the city and caused the damaged resulting rhe fall of the Malay sultanate empire.

@@quinoakalegreen4064 The executions of Bendahara and his son in law had no effect with the traitors. The main reason of the betrayal was the extra special treatment from the Sultan to the Tamil Nadu(South Indian) merchants that made the other merchants grew jealous. The only effect from the executions of the Bendahara's family was, it basically ended the support of Malay people in the kingdom to the Sultan. Bendahara was the only figure that hold things together for the Kingdom. Without him....well...we know what happened afterwards. Without the local Malays support, the Sultanate was basically nothing.

Thanks for the video Kirby. Malaysian here. The truth is the last Sultan was a terrible leader. A lot of his policies made him lost a lot of support from the Malay people. The executions of Tun Mutahir and Tun Ali practically sealed it. Another policy that made Malay people hated him was the appointment of many foreign merchants to many important posts in the royal palace. Funny thing is these foreign merchants were the ones betrayed and opened the gate for the Portuguese troops. Imagine, after all the support Sultan had given them and betrayed the Malays, those merchants in return betrayed the kingdom without thinking of the consequences on Southeast Asia itself. It basically started the western colonialism and imperialism on Southeast Asia. So in conclusion, there are 2 factors that led to the fall of Melaka and colonialisms of Southeast Asia. 1. Terrible leadership from the Sultan 2. Betrayal of greedy Merchants. Thanks again for the video Kirby. Appreciate it.

What happened to Malacca Sultanate in 14th Century is similar happening in Malaysia right now ; Corruptions, abuse of power, political agendas, disunity , scheming and conspiracies by the elites. It seems that we (Malaysian) never learnt from history on how our ancestor's lost their kingdom and sovereignty. .. Thank you for your information. I was being told before that the Fall of Malacca in 1511 open the gateway of colonialism in South East Asia. it was like a domino effect.

I visited Malacca coming from Singapore by train then took a bus at the Crossway where they require you to present your passport. Quaint place with portugese inspired architecture with cobble-stoned streets pretty much like Intramuros. They have fancy flower adorned tricycles and some kind of street activity like a man who could cut open a coconut using his hands. Also some guy selling snake oil good for all kind of ailments. 😂 Nice place to visit but you need to wear proper clothing and no opposite sex companion unless you are married if you need to stay in a hotel. 😉

actually, the melaka ruler went over to johor where he continued his sultanate till today. johor did become a trading centre and melaka's vassal states remained loyal to johor and none of them fell to the portuguese. later the netherlands and johor worked together to drive the portuguese out of melaka, but the sultan of johor ceded melaka to the netherlands as a reward. eventually the united kingdom stepped into johor to help a royal succession dispute and the winning sultan ended up giving melaka to the united kingdom.
@Biopolymath
@Biopolymath 11 ай бұрын
I think you have missed these points: 1. The current royal house ruling Johor is not from the House that once ruled Melaka. Johor went through changes of royal house twice. 2. The United Kingdom obtained Melaka from the Dutch after negotiating with Netherlands to exchange Bencoolen for Melaka. This is one of the terms of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824. I don't think the Sultan of Johor (who won the succession dispute) was in a position to voluntarily grant Melaka to the British. The Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 also demarcated sphere of influence between United Kingdom and Netherlands that essentially broke the Johor Empire into two.

The theory that Islam was spread by Arab and Indian traders is not conclusive and it is still debated to this date.Another theory is that it was brought in by the Chinese traders who were Muslims.It was made known that Admiral Cheng Ho was a Muslim man.This is evidenced that many earlier mosques built in Malacca were of Chinese pagoda architectural design.No one really knows the actual fact how the Melaka people converted to become Muslim.Be that as it may, the people tolerated other religious belief where mosques, indian temple and chinese temples could exist side by side of one another.That street in Melaka is loosely now known as Harmony Street as its unofficial name.
