Tamerlane is one of the ones I feel the worst about. Frederick says their father always pit him against Tamerlane to try and make him sharper, always making sure to give "Froderick" just a liiiiitle better at everything, to reinforce the competition. That made Tamerlane be always on the defensive, not wanting to show any weakness or trust on anyone. That's why she mistreats her husband. And that's probably why Verna gave Tamerlane the greatest number of chances to open up and make a better choice. She ALMOST opened up to Juno. She ALMOST confided on Bill T. Verna told her to get the phone and ask Bill to forgive her. She told her to stop fighting. At the very end she even said Tamerlane that she just had to STOP, breathe and go to sleep. Given how long she had been awake and how stressed and depressed she was, she could have easily gone to sleep and die before waking up, in peace and maybe even leave behind some good feelings if she had just picked up the phone and said "I'm sorry" to Bill for forcing him to all those sexual encounters he was CLEARLY uncomfortable with and for verbally abusing him.

"She could have easily gone to sleep" I mean she *was* trying, but unable to, sleep this entire episode, even the sleeping medication did nothing.

Tammy is definitely the one I felt most sorry for in the end, which surprised me - she really didn't have much personality outside being awful for the first five episodes, but Samantha Sloyan really sold how hard she always pushed herself and what it did to her.

Yeah, her story is inspired by Poe's short story, "William Wilson", where his doppleganger was stalking him and thwarting his underhanded schemes. In the end it turns out that the doppleganger was Wilson's conscience . Similar tale, the doppleganger thwarting the person's goals while trying to appeal to their better nature to do better while they still are able.

Interestingly, each of Usher's children sees their surroundings illuminated in a different color before they die. Perry sees red light, Camille sees white, Leo sees yellow, Vic sees orange, and Tamerlane sees green. Will this also happen to Frederick with another color?

I think it’s a reference to Poe’s original The Masque of the Red Death - every room was illuminated/thematically a single color in the story. I also enjoy the seven deadly sins theory too.

In spite of the name, this episode was mostly inspired not on Gold-bug, but on 2 short stories by Poe: - William Wilson (name of Tamerlane's hubby): in which a man has a doppelganger who is morally superior to him do the right thing every time he does something wrong. He stabs him but ends the story having "troubles" with mirrors. - Tamerlane: a poem about someone who gives up on the love of a good person for power and ends up discovering, too late, that they made the wrong choice. From Gold-bug itself comes just the idea of fighting tooth and nail to recover the good name and good fortunes of a family in crisis.

It’s so interesting hearing the reactions of people who aren’t familiar with Poe’s work. It’s fabulous that Flanagan was able to create something to enthrall both people familiar and new. One of the drawbacks to knowing Poe is having slight clues as to what’s going to happen. Once you hear Rue Morgue you know someone is getting their head (face) ripped off and there’s only one possible outcome for Annabelle Lee. The first thing I did was search the cast for a character named Bernice. They got me on that one. 😉

It is subtle, but all the Usher kids stop sleeping right before Verna's first appearence. Prospero suddenly awakes while everyone else is sleeping at his house. Camille wantd to have sex because she can't sleep. That makes the first couple days, so neither feel the lack of sleep too much but... Napoleon can't sleep so he increases his drug usage Victorine is having blanks, headaches and super stressed even before what she does. Tamerlane, as Bill tells her "has been awake for, like, a horror movie amount of time" and is heaving all these blackouts. Frederick... well, no spoilers.

This was a terrific show. And I just have to give a shout out to Mary McDonnell for her brilliant and frightening portrayal of Madeline. Two-time Academy Award nominee for her roles in Dances with Wolves and Passion Fish. Her stunning performance as President Laura Roslin in Battlestar Galactica. Her Emmy nomination for ER. Her role in Grey's Anatomy. The mother in Donnie Darko... etc. She's an underrated star.

You are absolutely correct. She is so damn talented. I would like to add her performance as Sharon Raydor in “The Closer,” and then “Major Crimes,” onto the list you made. The way she turned an incredibly unlikable character, into one you rooted for was, *chef’s kiss*. The Costner jokes throughout this series crack me up, both for “The BodyGuard,” reference, and “Dances with Wolves.” Such a clever Easter Egg. 😀

A few cool small details in this episode: you see the picture of Verna and she's not holding the black cat like we saw, when Lenore is watching Netflix with her mom they're watching Pit and the Pendulum and the movie they stop on is Gerald's Game which was made by the same guy who made those series and the haunting series along with midnight mass.

"She can't be death because she shows up on film"- well, I've only ever heard that vampires can't show up on film, but every version of a vampire story writes it's own rules and picks and chooses what aspects of existing mythologies they want to play with. The rules of how things work with immortality entities is whatever Flanagan decides they are for the purposes of this story. I don't think Verna is death itself. She's not there for everyone. I think she's something closer to a karmic force. She seeks out those who seek out power and will give it to them at a cost. But only temporarily- in time, she will reset the scales and even things out again. If you're not voraciously greedy, Verna isn't trying to have anything to do with you. And she does what she does because it's her job. Who she's beholden to and why she has to do this, that isn't known.

Have you guys watched The Midnight Club? Also Flanigan and it has several of the young actors from this show. Perry, Camille's interns, the granddaughter and Juno are all in it. "Juno" is the best character on that show too imo. The Young Roderick actor (also from Midnight Mass but I can't remember any of these names rn!) is also in it AND Heather Langenkamp! (Nancy from Nightmare on Elm Street) The show is different from Flanagans other shows, it's a bit lighter but I still enjoyed it.

I don't know if you remember, but in the first episodes they are talking about a powder that paralyzes you, its one of the fishy things that Victorine's clinic had and also fortunato, and that is the powder that Froderick is using on his wife, i think it was something related to belladonna o wolfsbane something like that, very famous plants.

The story of Pym is a reference to the Poe story, "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" and each reference Roderick creates is from the story. The beings outside of time and space is likely a reference to Verna's people and a later conversation indicates the shrouded pale figure the incomplete story ends on is Verna.

Observing life from afar but not being part of it, she gets killed by broken mirror shards. I cringed at every glass piece cutting her - nasty! It's still not over and it gets darker and stranger from here. P.S. - I hope you consider my request of watching "As Above, So Below" for a movie reaction. It'll be worth it. Cheers!
