I think it's not a coincidence that as soon as we saw Russian troops start pushing south from Novohrodivka, essentially shfiting the direction of the Pokrovsk offensive southwards, Russian troops also started making gains in Vuhledar. The whole thing looks like a strategic three-pronged operation aimed at collapsing the whole Kurakhove defense region. The northern front is in Ukrainsk and Hirnk, trying to squeeze Ukraine from cities to the north of Kurakhove and potentially flank it from the west. The central front is Ostroe, and it's essentially a frontal attack meant to probe Ukrainian defenses in the center, pin down significant Ukrainian forces there and sever the logistics between Hirnik and Kurakhove. It's curious how it came alive last of the three, as soon as Russia started having success in Ukrainsk and towns north of Hirnik. The whole move is a second pincer which was meant to be activated as soon as Ukraine started falling back in Ukrainsk. This way Russia intendes to collapse the Nevelske salient and help the northern front keep up the momentum southwestward, with the final aim of storming Kurakhivka and linking up. The southern front is Vuhledar, obviously. It's the hardest of the three and was perhaps the most uncertain of the three. If Vuhledar held, Ukraine would have still collapsed in Hirnik and Kurakhivka, but they would have a prepared defense line in Kurakhove so it would be a tolerable defeat. However, with the fall of Vuhledar Russia gets the opportunity to strike Kurakhove from the south if they manage to breach several other, albeit weaker, defense lines. If Kurakhove falls, the whole Southern Donetsk oblast is basically doomed. There are few major cities and water bodies west of the current Ukrainian HQ. To make matters worse, there are no ready defense lines. Naturally, Ukraine will attempt to build up some if the push comes to shove, but these won't be nearly as effective as those Russia was facing in Nevelske, Konstantinivka or Vuhledar. If Kurakhove falls, the south Donetsk front will become a mess like during the Pokrovsk breakthrough, but 3 - 4 times wider Edit: I might be underestimating Russia though. If they play their cards right, they might reach Kurakhove from the south in just a few weeks. If this happens, Ukraine is cooked 💀
@simonpetrikov3992
@simonpetrikov3992 Ай бұрын
Hmm would that have any effects on the rest of the front lines beyond southern Donetsk?
@ivanbadaev6621
@ivanbadaev6621 Ай бұрын
@@simonpetrikov3992Of course it would! I mean, every fortress serves as a force multiplier. A fort defended by one batallion would be just as effective at holding back the enemy as three batallions in open terrain. The same in Donbass. Once the frontline moves past Kurakhove, Ukraine will have to defend "open fields". They can do this with three options: 1. Send in the reserves 2. Conscript and train more brigades 3. Fight with what they have left. Option one will, naturally, deplete the Ukrainian reserve a lot. This means that if Russian troops achieve another breakthrough somewhere else, Ukraine will have much harder time sealing the Russian advance. Think the Khrakhiv counteroffensive kind of situation. Option two will allow Ukraine to retain the reserves, but it will come at a cost of provoking social outrage at more mobilizations. Furthermore, each mobilization wave brings in troops of worse and worse quality. When Russia stormed Ocheretine, they were dealing with auch conscripts and this generated a local disaster, the reverberations of which we see today. At some point Ukraine will either have to conscript the youth, or their new formations will simply become incapable of combat and only hold back on the rest of the army. Option three will lead to a progressive cascade of defeats in the southeastern part of Donbass. If Ukraine doesn't address this, Russian troops will sooner or later reach Ukrainian rear positions in Zaporizhia and northern Donetsk oblast, gradually collapsing the frontline with flanking strikes (think Novohrodivka and Ukrainsk a month ago, but on a grander scale). Ukraine has a lot of territory, but if they go on this route, the more they delay, the worse it will get for the whole frontline. Hope this somes it up nicely. Thx for asking :^

Logistics decides everything. Look at the railway map. Having approached Pokrovsk station at the artillery range, the Russians bled dry the logistics of Ugledar. Now the nearest station is Gulyaipole more than a hundred kilometers to the west. The Southern Railway is under the control of the Russians. Moreover, they built an additional branch bypassing a potentially dangerous section. The Ukrainians have not built anything during this time.
@ivanbadaev6621
@ivanbadaev6621 Ай бұрын
@@alext5285 I'm not sure that railway lines are relevant here. Pokrovsk is a hub that connects the Kramatorsk aglomeration, an enormous Ukrainian defense node. It is absolutely vital for Northern Donetsk - Chasiv Yar and the big cities northwards. However, the whole Southern Donetsk oblast is supplied with motorized transport (trucks, basically). It has been for almost the whole war, actually. Didn't stop Russia from getting absolutely demolished in Vuhledar before.

next week is october 1st will many of the fronts not come to a standstill within the next few weeks? with the arrival of the rasputitsa, especially in the farmers' fields there that also makes VUHLEDAR impossible to supply I guess, because all paved roads there seem to come under Russian control but for the rest of what you draw there is that not more something for mid-winter or spring? I would expect that in places like Toretsk the front will remain in motion, because it is an urban area

@@jamesgornall5731 No, it doesn´t. In Bakhmuth they could do that, in Vughledar it is no longer an option. It would not even be an option, if Ukraine still had the troups for that. Even pointless reinforcements need a logistics base for them to get there. Check the map. For the Ukrainians it is 10km+ to the next pretty insignificant villages, there is no equivalent of Chasiv Yar close to Vughledar and the villages which do exist have nothing like the Sloviansk/Kramatorsk line to back them up. There is only Kurachove - which is also already under pressure from the north and the east.The days, when Vughledar was connected to a decent line of defense together with Kostyantynivka and Vodyane are over.
