I was wondering what length the mills preferred for this variety of tree. Does it still depend on diameter? Do you try to get maximum length?? And what is criteria? Like condition, etc? Love your videos, dialogue and authenticity. Semper fi

In fir, sometimes. More often in redwood it's a consideration and/or requirement. Standard rule: buck if tape (middle to middle) goes off the bole. Sometimes the mill will "whine" because if you don't and just run them long they don't get massive overrun on the pencil bucking happening by the scaler. Trouble is, I started decades ago when EVERYTHING was full man. You bucked for quality as much as length. When the log has a bunch of curvature (aka sweep) it makes it hard to load. Also, the truck headed down the road, looks like a hack was processing the wood. Direction changes like snow break, spike knots, marms, etc. are generally bucked to out and/or to tye the straight tape standard. At least that's the way I'm doing it. Different mills have varying destinations for the lumber. Those mills may want "these" length. The mill(s) down the street ( may or may not) have different end retail outlet(s) that wants different lengths. So, it depends a little bit on which mill is buying said raw logs. I mentioned this just the other day to another viewer - I have seen where the bucking spec will change mid-slope due to a market shift. I've seen where it has changed more than once in the same strip if it is deeper as well. It's happened more than a couple of times as well. Talk about being on your toes bucking.... That '08 to '10 fun session was the "worstest" for the bucking specs to change. Some of the consideration is the bucked end diameter. The over 40" goes to a specific mill due to the price idea. Sometimes it's the capability of the mill. Most have retooled and do small logs fast. Sometimes it is a buttend diameter consideration. Back to the mill and what they can handle expediently. Some of that it is certain mills flat cannot handle over, let's say 36" wood. Nutshell, you buck for the spec that is supplied by the mill(s) that are purchasing the raw logs. Thanks for watching.

Hello and good afternoon, I was really considering picking up one of the Makita/ Dolmar ea7900prz2 saws, what are your thoughts? Is it EPA 'd to death or is it worth getting and modding. I am either gonna go with that or an older Husq 372xp and pepping it up. Just curious what you think. Prolly run a 28-32 bar. Thanks for the videos.

Hs & Hg hi. There are a few videos on the channel with the 7900/7910 DolKitas. One from a couple of summers ago where a 6421 upgraded to a 7901 Makita bests a 5ooi and even edges out my 281. Although, the 281 has the log on it's heals moreso than the others. EPA-ed into submission, most new saws are. Getting rid of the phony SLR tube is a pain. Finding a decent coil is becoming a bit of a problem. Once they run right, sans the serious brush holes due to the poor chip management clutch cover, its a hard platform to beat in the 70 to 80cc class. Weights the same or less than a 5ooi. Exponentially better fuel mileage. Non smog saw. Designed at least 15 years prior if you want give kudos the the (Sachs) Dolmar boys. In the end, getting one "up to speed" is involved. Man i hate when the chain gets tossed off the bar. I've spent more time fixing buggerd up chains then I prolly should. And everytime it happends to me it's a fresh chain. I know that struggle all to well. Pretty sure they have been all oregon chains that do that... any one else notice that? Maybe it's just me?

Bryan hi. What is the guage of said chains? I've noticed that full comp chains that are .050 gauge "fling" off more easily than .058 which will "fling" off more easily than .063 chains. It's the extra weight & width of the drivers & chassis that keeps the chain on the rails imho. Thanks for watching.

I go around 190-200 degrees from tdc on big bucking…then that only leaves a small wedge of uncut wood that i sever from bottom up…few if any bar binds as the dropping end falls free. Also i sometimes make a “felling notch” on top on a buck that i know is heavy top bind, then make a “felling” cut from the bottom…same effect as the first method…

John hi. That will work in some applications. A big redwood that spans, not always. They will split. I take it on a case by case basis. Can a guy even get to the side opposite on a 48 or 50" cut. Is it loaded toward me. Away from me. Is it spanning 25'. 125"... I've never found where you can get away with "x" on every buck every time. Thanks for watching.

Is that .063, or smaller? I could mess .050 drivers in a hurry compared to their thicker friends it seemed.
