I feel like Pete Wentz is holding back the band's potential heavily, him being the "face" of the band resulted in him hanging out with celebrities and big name artists, which made him become who he is today. It's a real shame because if you listen to the other members' works they sound more diverse than FOB's post-hiatus output. Patrick Stump co-wrote and produced Dead End In Tokyo by Man With A Mission and that song was a hit and IMO one of the best songs in their discography. Andy Hurley also has a few hardcore side projects that he plays in when he's not busy with FOB, plus he and Joe are in The Damned Things which was a great side project with Anthrax and Every Time I Die members. I think Pete should take a backseat in the songwriting department and let the other members write more so that they won't pump out another soulless electropop drivel like their post-hiatus releases (sans Pax Am Days, which was a nice change of pace).

Marble Marble honestly me too, after listening to MANIA a couple times you can kind of tell. Me being the weirdo I am I looked at the last track (bishops knife trick) and the last lyrics of the song are something along the lines of *"these are the last blues (the last)"* and I thought. There is a high chance this will be there last album....that might have nothing to do with anything, but that's what I thought.

Dying Rocket They truly need to calm down, stop forcing stuff out and take a break. They can still be a band, they don't have to always go on tour for every album and such, I'm just fine with them creating music. They're spreading apart. When you do something for an amount of time, for some the passion leaves

Fall Out Boy is a battery with a five year life. Every five years you take a break to recharge it. It starts great in the beginning, probably because everyone has missed it, but starts to slow down to the same malfunctions as time goes on.

Has always confused me as to why adults from 30-40 years of age try to write songs that speak to teens when it isn't possible! It comes off as cringe-worthy because we know these guys aren't partying and going through melodramatic breakups or whatever. Artists like fall out boy need to embrace themselves and their standing in life

i know for a fact that if pete tried he could write killer songs about fears of growing older and growing irrelevant but rather than writing the lyrics that actually apply to him now hes trying to fight that and write what wouldve fit his life 12 years ago. such a shame to see such a talented lyricist waste away into a money grabbing trend hopping man.

Older people are just kids who have lived longer than us. They still have similar emotions, just more experiences to draw from. I don’t think they are trying to please anyone. It seems like they enjoyed making MANIA. They made the songs the way they wanted to. Yes, they aren’t guitar based rock like they used to be but it’s also nice in it’s own way. Getting upset about the way others conduct their personal creative choices is a massive waste of time.

I kind of feel like after this they might break up. I just hope they take some time off and come up with something more creative than MANIA. I thought Save Rock And Roll was the best album they’ve released but then after that they started going more and more downhill. I just hate how they are trying to stay popular when they could be more popular if they just be themselves.. Ugh I really hope they just take another few years and then come back with something great. If I start making albums and stuff I want to open for them. :(

I think that „being themselves“ is what they’re doing right now. They have put out mania even though they knew a lot of people wouldn’t like that new style because it’s what they wanted to do. This seems like Folie a deux all over again, where they make something different and everyone is just hating on it before even giving it a chance. I mean, there were already tons of negative reviews for mania before the album was even published

I originally wrote off Mania, having not been the biggest fan of what Fall Out Boy was doing with American Beauty/American Psycho. They're my second favorite band of all time and I felt like they weren't doing the best they could. I enjoyed a lot of the singles off that album, but it didn't feel like the band I admired. I thought Mania would be the same. But, I finally gave it a listen and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed. I thought the songwriting sounded like Fall Out Boy. I know it's a polarizing album, but I wanted to voice my opinion. This video was great and I love the idea of this channel doing video essays.

I'm gonna sound awful, but I feel like if this is the direction FOB is going, then maybe it's better to hang up the guitars for good. I'd rather them admit that their music will only go more downhill from here and stop making music instead of forcing themselves to keep going and crashing and burning at the end. No one wants their favorite band to breakup but sometimes it's for the better. Unless FOB can put out more quality content with the suggestions Jon made about time off and going back to basics, I think it'd be better for them to disband.

@hñähñumaki 6 жыл бұрын
Foxxii I don’t mean to sound rude and sorry if this is long but going #1 on the charts does not make it “great” (and neither is a Grammy nomination). If that’s the case then that means Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” is fantastic and that makes “One More Light” great as well. I do agree that PFTW isn’t nearly as good as DOAB but the lyrics in those albums both have lazy repetitive lyrics (and for someone who expresses how talented he is in songwriting and likes to work alone because people aren’t “up to his caliber”, he decides to hire over 30 people to write lyrics for DOAB ALONE but I’m not so sure about PFTW but it most likely is the same).

The best part of the early Fall Out Boy albums, in my opinion, were Pete's screams. It gave the albums more of a post-hardcore vibe than just regular pop punk. It's sad that Pete would rather do EDM drops and poppy lyrics nowadays.

They still make amazing music... Now they have "So much (for) Star Dust" though. They are amazing. Their talent is beyond many bands these days. They are just fantastic, and no one will change my mind about that. Maybe not as big as they were before... and yes, Mania was a bit different from their usual sound, but they are still doing what they love. Phenomenal band. Have been and will always be... You can't make the exact same music all the time. They were being 'experimental,' if you will, but I feel like they were in a place to do so. They are adults now and started the band when they were teens. Them making music about their youth, for example, 'Young and Menace,' should not have gotten the hate and called 'cringe.' That's like saying a grandparent telling stories to their grandchildren about them when they were young is weird... Fall Out Boy is great. Not gonna change." Its not like the music they make now changes how great they have been with their earlier albums. They arent cringe. they make art... If you disrespect art you are kinda stupid...

I find it funny how Fall Out Boy has remained consistent in one way. Pre-hiatus: Take This to Your Grave < From Under the Cork Tree < Infinity on High < Folie a Deux. Post-hiatus: Save Rock and Roll > American Beauty, American Psycho > Mania. If Fall Out Boy puts out another album it better be more than 2-3 years from now and it better at least be better than Save Rock and Roll, so I agree that Fall Out Boy needs a break to put out better stuff. I really do hope for a redemption album after the trash that was Mania.

This is great! Even though I’m a 14 year old who’s growing up in the age of Post Hiatus Fall Out Boy, I honestly agree with all of the points you made. I have enjoyed all of their albums (Folie is the BEST) but I wish they would just be that band they used to be. Mania was just disappointing. It was kind of sad to see these former pop-punk overlords turn into what they are now. They just pander to pop trends. If they announced that they’d be taking a break, I’d be really hopeful honestly. They should continue to create the music they love, without having to worry about hitting the Top 40. After all, do you see any other bands like Green Day hitting the Top 40? No. Fall Out Boy needs to move on.

So I have a few questions: 1. Why should the wave be the symbol for them "crashing" the band into the end? and not like bringing them "on to high ground" or somehting like that (excuse my english - i am no native speaker btw) 2. Yes they have children - but not only Fall Out Boy has. -> Children mean money -> working = money -> working = making music 3. they all seem pretty happy currenty (on tour, in interviews..) 4. They have deleayed their album to make it the way they liked it. they have said this SEVERAL times - even on tour. So for that I think they aren't rushing thaaat strong. 5. They currently have no label they are under. And Pete promised in an interview that we gonna have to expect somehting wild - and not only music/ a new album -- this STRONGLY dissents with them preparing their break-up. 6. Yeah you/many don't like MANIA? But they didn't like the other new albums in the past.. I personally think MANIA is much stronger than like AB/AP. And they have a new style since the comeback. So yeah maybey they have changed since then. But I don't think they have changed again now leading towards a breakup.. BUT yeah I feel like regarding to singing Patrick may need to slow down and give the others more parts as they might feel ignored/minor/.. but they just discuss in the band together if they are unhappy and I am pretty sure patrick isn'T a dick

Fall Out Boy has been my favorite band since I first heard them back with the release of From Under The Cork Tree. I will always love them and be a #1 supporter of the band, and I even still love a handful of songs off of M A N I A, but this is true. Everything you said about them trying too hard nowadays to be relevant is killing them. They've completely forgotten who they are and they overuse the "music evolves over time" excuse to try to explain it. The lyrical content is still good, but nowhere near where it used to be. I feel as if they can either go in one of two directions, either go their separate ways or take time off and make something better. I can't see it getting worse than M A N IA nor do I want to. I mean Joe and Andy have The Damned Things, Pete's working on Skeleton Steph, and Patrick's is starting to score stuff. I don't want to see this band end. As a long time Fall Out Boy fan, I actually loved MANIA and thoroughly enjoyed seeing them live on the MANIA tour, but I definitely agree with you that the band would benefit from a break. I really think they could come back with some incredible stuff if they just had more time to write and experiment. That said, as someone with Bi-polar disorder, the MANIA album really speaks to me. It honestly feels to me like the soundtrack to a manic episode, and helps me feel alive and better about who I am. Maybe I'm biased. This band has helped me through an 11 year struggle with anorexia and bi-polar disorder and so perhaps I only see the good parts. But all I know is I would love to hear more from them.

The most frustrating thing about Mania is that there are some truly fantastic tracks on there. If they just waited much longer between albums the quality of them would naturally soar

here's an idea for an essay: "Paramore- a pop punk band forced to cry" I think it should be about how both the background drama behind the scenes and how they we're marketed to the public forced what could have been another fun pop punk band that would have come out of the 2000's into one of the most depressing stories of the recent music industry, a band with a new problem behind every new album that made them what they are today for better or worse. i truly believe that paramore would have been a totally different band if it we'rent for the circumstances that haunted their career. you can try to explore the sacrifices that had to be made with every change and if it would have actually been any good for them to be that supposed "happier band". i hope you at least consider this. take whatever creative liberties you want with the idea. also no credit needed for the idea but you do what you want

Great video. FOB is my "childhood" or original fav band, so it's disappointing to say that I no longer enjoy their new music. But I still appreciate all of the great albums they have produced. What you said is exactly true, get back to where you once belonged and rediscover what made it so special. Hope we see a turnaround for them at some point

Pre-hiatus fall out boy will always be my favorite. I always thought they'd come back with a sound like Alpha Dog or From Now On We're Enemies, but Mania and ABAP made it abundantly clear that's not gonna happen. I'm ok with a band switching up their sound, but not when the guitar work gets less intricate and the drums become generic and uninspired. It feels like they're dumbing it down.

Fall out boy are my favourite band. I love all of there records (except mainia) and I agree with every word. They seem to feel too pressured to be relatable and be constantly active in some way or another. I wouldn’t mind another hiatus if it makes them realise that they don’t have to stop writing the way they used to for the sake of an image

This is so good. I love FOB, and even though I personally liked Mania, I can agree that it is not on the same level as their other albums. And because I love this band so much I would rather see them take another hiatus instead of pushing themselves and breaking up for good.

I got into Fall Out boy when they released Under the Cork tree and then went back to listen to Take This To your Grave. I remember being so in love with how punk they sounded. I didn't even mind Folie. But now they seem so desperately trying to relate. I'm only a year older than Patrick stump and it makes me feel sad that they would rather appeal to 14/15 year olds than fans who grew up with them. I really wish they would get back to their roots and take more time to release music with meaning again. Great video, Jon.

I totally agree, most of the tracks off mania it took time to grow to like them after repetition. Here's hoping they take it back to the basics and their next album bliws us away and if full of calling that make sense like panic! At the Disco or twenty one pilots. I could die of happiness

I actually really loved this format, and this was an amazing video. I do agree that they've declined in quality over the years, but I still love Fall Out Boy. I liked MANIA, it wasn't my favorite album, it was probably one of my least favorites by them, but I still liked it. There were some missteps *cough* Sunshine Riptide *cough*, but overall, though it was a mess album-wise, it had a really fun, catchy feel that resounded with me. I don't think FOB necessarily declined completely, though. Save Rock and Roll is one of my favorite albums of all time. But anyway, I still like the music, but totally agree with you and love this essay format. Keep up the good work.

That's a great job, good video, the first one of yours that i've seen. It's your opinion, your essay, i get it, some things you've said might even be true. But i went through the comment section for a bit, and, isn't it wierd that teenagers kind of 'judging' the band in terms of trying to be relatable, doing wrong things in their careers? They've been in this for years, working with other professional musicians, producers, etc. Deadlines, continuous touring and fast changes in the music spheres could be damaging in some sence. Maybe they need another break, who knows, maybe they're aware of their mistakes with mania. But now the band are currently done with the island contract, as pete said, they are free to do whatever they want. So maybe if they still want to work together as a band on the next album, we should wait for something completely new. But really, thanks for your video, it's been great to hear other person's opinion, that differs from mine. It makes me mad though, that people (some fans) tell that they should just put the guitars down and never make music again or reliese another srar album. I think they're doing what they like, as best as they could for now. It would be great though if they didn't feel the pressure from the younger ewer audience. If they see that teens relate to their music what should they do? Write songs about being dads and how they want to grow old on a rancho? i mean...i'm still sure they write songs or making features with rap artists not just because they want to stay popular and relatable but because they really like it, because it feels like fob. maybe i'm out of my mind, because i've been listening to their music for more than ten years and i cant think rationally because of it. but mania still feels like fob for me, even though it's more pop and the sounding is different. If someone does not like the album maybe they should go listen some other band's new stuff. Dont be angry or upset because the band you like "gone bad", life's too fucking short for that. Listen only to the music that feels true to you. If someone've read my old fart's rant, i'm sorry. and have a nice day! And also subscribing for more video essays

I love almost all the albums FOB has put it out( with the exception of MANIA), i still think Folie A Deux is their best album. The themes and sound are amazing is very FOB, but different at the same time. I find it weird to read about how fans react it to it back in 09, since it is what fans now want.

Hola123 Maybe a bit unrelated, but All Time Low's old manager, Matt Flyzik did leave the crew and as far as I know they were still friends and didn't fight. I know Joe and Andy are band members whereas Matt was "just" a manager but I think the relationship dynamic was pretty similar
