Sharapova was a great player, but Serena was better at almost every aspect of the game. There's no aspect of her game that i can think of that's better than Serena's. Therefore Serena was a horrible match up for her. But Sharapova really troubled other players including some of those that gave Serena some troubles. It's quite surprising how the media tried to push a rivalry.

I would feel bad for Maria, until I realized that she was the highest paid female athlete for 11 years in a row during some Serena's most dominant tennis, where Serena handed her some of the most prolific defeats ever witnessed in history. This clearly showed who was the better player, yet Serena received awards while Maria received endorsements. The only reason why Serena eclipsed Maria in 2016 was because Maria got caught doping. I say Serena's legacy is priceless but it's still fucked up how Maria was so heavily endorsed and was paid way more, for reasons that are obvious.

Serena was just better than Sharapova in general but I think a lot of their h2h is down to the fact that Maria didn’t believe she could be Serena after 2007. From then on even if she was playing better or up in a match she was never confident enough in her own game to close out Serena and I don’t think she had that mentality against any other players. I miss them both on tour as it is so bland these days and glad to see Maria, Venus, and Serena are all good friends now.

The feud or rivalry or whatever the media called it was more than made up to sell news if not sensation. I looked at how their handshake and overall body language was towards eachother: not catfightish at all. Especially Serena Williams shook hands in a nice way, even in defeat [ = at the season end championships in 2004]. Also from Maria Sharapova's side at the net post-match. One match summary shows her smile or grin w/ a face expression like 'we really have to play well when we are drawn against at a tournament. Of course, later, after losing 10 matches in a row, how can someone be cheerful? The hand shakes of MS changed, example is Miami Open loss in 2013...song: Cold as ice by Foreigner:) Their liason dangereuse involving Grigor Dimitrov added a certain kind of spice! I wonder why it is so difficult for people to know what a rivalry is. Both women were always at the later stages of the tournaments. Maria beat all the players who beat Serena and both fought to get there, both wanted it. It doesn't matter if Serena won all their meetings or not, Maria was always present cuz no one else could, so give her some credit too, cuz not only she had to play the GOAT but Serena was always 100% focused against her, she wanted to destroy her and play as hard as she could. We all could see that fire that wasn't much present against other players. Maybe just against Henin too.
