I used to work in a shipyard, we didnt produce electric motors, we repaired them however. I did machine giant propeller shafts though similar to these very large ones for cargo ships.. its a crazy job and very rewarding once the job is done and working

What is amazing is that you need not only to fabricate the end product but also all the machinery along the line of manufacturing the end product…to make the machine that makes the machine that makes the machine, etc. 🤪

As a retired Ph. D. mechanical engineer, I have to confess, this IS amazing. I never gave it much thought since huge hydrodynamic turbine generators have been around for almost a century and motors are pretty much the same thing as a generator, but the precision and size here are fascinating.

I’m not an engineer. Nor a construction worker or a welder, but I’m always impressed to watch videos Ike this one. Mind blowing constructions that weighs tonnes and are bigger than anything, but yet they are built with precision down to 1/100 millimetres in order to fit. That is to me impressive.

I was lucky enough to be employed by a electrical contractor, in which I was involved in the disassembly, rewinding, rebuilding of some large industrial motors. Sometimes we went out of the shop to reinstall some of these motors. Some of the most exciting for me was going on a naval vessel and working on it while the vessel went out on a test run before leaving for it's home port. Another was installing a generator on top of a highrise countrleavor crane while not being under power blew around freely like a weather vane. Thank you for your video. It brought back some good memories

What gets me with this type of video is just how many machines were used to make a machine that then makes another machine and then that makes another machine, it's so circular, the metal foundry needs the electric power that ultimately comes from the generator that was made using the metal in the foundry.

Those guys look like the 'A Team'. Noticed after posting comment, Koffler filmed in 2012; here's hoping they still all happy chappies.

The largest 3 phase electric motors I have seen were in Los Angeles DWP Scattergood Generating Station. They were the Forced Draft Fan Motors of unit 3 that has since been dismantled and removed. These were 4,000 horsepower motors that ran on 4160 volts. These fans were the most noisy fans in the generating station. They had sound deadening enclosures around them to cut down the noise to the nearby city of El Segundo.
@MACHINERYTECHNOLOGY
@MACHINERYTECHNOLOGY 3 ай бұрын
Can you give me more information about it?
@davidgrisez
@davidgrisez 3 ай бұрын
Unit 3 at Scattergood had a pressurized furnace, so there were 2 Forced Draft Fans of 4000 horsepower to supply combustion air to the boiler, this unit did not have Induced Draft Fans to remove combustion gases from the boiler. These motors were induction motors. The motor shaft was directly connected to the fan shaft. The air flow into the fans was regulated by inlet dampers on the fans. The boiler was a supercritical pressure boiler that operated at 3550psi pressure. The Turbine-Generator had a full load output of 460 megawatts. This unit 3 was built around 1973. It was removed from service and dismantled somewhere around 2017 to make room for a new more efficient combined cycle unit that as of today has not yet been built. These huge motors were also direct across the line start. These fans took many seconds to spin up to speed when started and would draw a tremendous amount of startup current that would dim the control room lights.@@MACHINERYTECHNOLOGY

Gives me faith in the "power" of insulators in this application. I.e., just a sliver of reliability since one failure out of all enameled wire results in total motor failure
@MACHINERYTECHNOLOGY
@MACHINERYTECHNOLOGY 5 ай бұрын
In high voltage systems containing transformers and capacitors, liquid insulator oil is the typical method used for preventing arcs. The oil replaces air in spaces that must support significant voltage without electrical breakdown. Other high voltage system insulation materials include ceramic or glass wire holders, gas, vacuum, and simply placing wires far enough apart to use air as insulation.

Pumped hydro powerplants need generators that also act as motors to pump water into the basin when electricity is cheap. There is actually no difference between a generator and a motor, it just depends on how it is used. (And some design details I don't know about)@@rxpsycho7326
