Interesting trivia. I think Kalam in Abdul Kalam refers to the Arabic word for speech. (كلام) It's common to praise a person with speech skills. Qalam (قلم) pen or stick also makes sense. Both are utilities to knowledge.
@absawa6 ай бұрын
Yes, Abdul Kalam's name is kalam with the root k-l-m. Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and even Egyptian Arabic wikipedia uses كلام. Either way, is there any sources to find out how APJ Kalam wrote his name in Arabic or Tamil Arvi, cause Tamil makes no distinction between q and k.

I find it remarkable that although South India has a wonderfully rich platter of indigenous dishes featuring fish and meat, yet the only food with which it is identified is vegetarian Idli-dosa-vada. Not that I am against vegetarian Idli-dosa-vada, but isn't it shameful that the food habits of a small part of the population (mainly Brahmins or Sanskritized Non-Brahmins) are highlighted so much that the culinary traditions of all other South Indians simply get erased from public knowledge?
@vaishalihardikar60696 ай бұрын
It's not about vegetarians or Brahmins or non- Brahmins. The fact why idli, dosa is popular is because of the affordability, availablity of the food and the Udupi restaurants which are spread all over the country who serve this food. Another point is that an average indian doesn't consume nonveg food in his everyday meals.
@krishashok6 ай бұрын
It also has to do with the fact that brahmins traveled more widely outside in the past and the role of Udupi restaurants in introducing eating out as a concept. An additional thing is the "impurity" attached to eating meat or seafood in India that has made "non-veg" restaurants truly popular only rather recently. I think the wider cuisine of south india will eventually become well known over time.
@raviv74846 ай бұрын
Idli dosa and vada are also unique in their shape, taste and composition from a lot of other world cuisine. Note that the more brahminical kozhakattai has a lot of semblances to dumplings. Donuts are nowhere close to vada. On the contrary most popular “Indian dish” that comes first to mind to non-Indian westerners is chicken tikka masala. Ain’t nothin to do with Brahmins. Sad to see vegetarian/anti-Brahmin sentiment trending.

Interesting information, Ashok. Was wondering why people in very hot regions like Rajasthan, Andhra & Telangana use chillies a lot (maybe even garlic & oils / ghee) in their cooking. Why have fire inside the body and outside of it?!! Shouldn't they be using less chillies / garlic / oil / ghee to compensate for the heat outside? Any thoughts about this, Ashok? Thanks! 😊

The "kalam" of Abdul Kalam is "kalaam", meaning "speech" or "words". The Arabic (borrowed in Persian, Urdu, Bangla etc.) word for pen is "qalam", not "kalaam".

The word qalam (قلم) , kalam (كلام) aren't related afaik. Qalam has its roots in Greek, where as kalam is of native Arabic origin. I doubt they're related etymologically.

Yes, some people did tell me but I checked with a linguist and he believes the root word is still the proto-indo-european word k-l-m
