Chester got revenge in the fast show live shows. "I've seen it- here's your fucking washboard." And he smashes it over Arthur's head

Chester Drawers' nephew Joe Beasley appeared on a once-popular chat show, 'Alan Partridge' with an act called "Cheeky Monkey". The family curse once again came into play with quite predictable results.

Corny humour was just the thing back then. The clouds of tobacco smoke rising in the theatre was too. These people had been through WW2 and just wanted simple entertainment and a laugh. Really nice allusion to Arthur Askey and his ilk. The Fast Show was one of the finest comedy series, ever along with Harry Enfield.

The world wasn't yet ready for Chester Drawers. His radical "blue" and deeply racist humour wouldn't be accepted till the New Wave of British comedy of the 'sixties, personified by the likes of Bernard Manning.

I know it's a piss take but I wonder whether it was based on someone. As the sketches go on through the show he's shown to be a real prick with a pervy side, a sort of person who was popular but had a hidden agenda and a wicked streak, bit of a Jimmy Saville type character
@BackToTheBlues8 ай бұрын
I'd say Arthur Atkinson was based on Tommy Trinder. The height of his popularity was in the 1940's and 50's, and he had a similarly fast-talking, abrasive outgoing manner. Toward the end of his career he appeared on the panel show The Parlour Game, and annoyed his co-stars by manoeuvring things so he always got the last word in. If you Google 'comedy chronicles bruce forsythe tommy trinder' you'll be able to read a fascinating article called 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us: Comedy Rivalries' about Trinder and Forsythe, and in one part you can even see a real similarity to the bit where Chester Drawers comes on and Atkinson walks off.

Yes if he was acting tragic, fair enough. He was actually just being tragic. A different kind of "funny". Bullet proof role as "Roy" though, agreed. He did a sketch show with Aherne and Cogan for Granada, years before. Although local to me I've only seen a few clips. It really looked awful. Onwards and upwards I guess.

The closest to him was Arthur Askey who was a huge star in the era this is set in, His catchphrases were "Hello Playmates", and "Ay-Thang-Yaw" {I thank you said in a funny drawl }. it sounds awful but he really was very funny in his day. Many old pro's regard his as the funniest there was but I myself liked Ted Ray for razor sharp wit OH, and Tommy Cockles lol

@@RonWylie-gk5lc - I think Tommy Cockles is a cross between Barry Norman and Denis Norden.
