Component car is referring to a self assembly vehicle that is mostly new components that are designed from factory to fit, not take offs. Perfect example is factory five when you choose all the new bits in the catalog or a vehicle from superlite. A kit car is a vehicle who utilizes mostly used parts from an existing vehicle(think more than just powertrain here). That's basically what I've gathered from my research when I was looking to buying one

And Replica?
@jacobschechtman762 жыл бұрын
@@krisraps replica seems to be a gray area,you have people like superformance and RCR utilizing 85%+ of the recreated original parts and then you have replica's that go the other side and are meant to look like the car, but function differently. The most replica's that are on the market today are big money cars, it's just hard to discern what a kit/component car is and a replica begins. For example superformance comes as a rolling chassis minus engine and drivetrain. RCR is sold as a component car unless you choose to do their turnkey minus program where they build it all minus engine and ecu parts installed.

@kurtdobson7 ай бұрын
@@benjaminmayle3629 Thanks for asking. I'm a Ph.D EE and most of my career has been in developing wireless communications, radar and such. But I decided to build this Ultima GTR to race in the Silver State Classic. My twin-turbo 911 Porsche would only do 207mph and I wanted something faster. So I had the factory build me a rolling chassis, but I designed the engine, a dry-sump SBC with Kinsler stack injection inside a plenum driven buy two turbochargers through air-air intercoolers. It had cockpit adjustable boost from 660hp to 1450hp; 750hp was enough to lap the corvettes, ferraris and BMW's. The problem was I had to design the headers and all the intercooler plumbing. It was harder than I thought, so I spent a year developing a SW program that designs tubing solutions automatically. This involved solving an 'inverse' mathematical problem so I published a white paper on the algorithms and project which got me invited to speak at PRI show in Colorado. One of the execs from GM Performance was there and he wanted me to design header solutions for his premier NASCAR team, Hendrick's Motorsports. I ended up doing much more than headers, spent two years helping them with optimizing their NASCAR engines using CFD, instrumented engines on the dyno and a lot of math. We went from 740hp in 2000, to 815hp two years later. From that I was asked to help Ralt, an F1/Indy chassis company to design the headers for the Honda V10 F1 engine in their chassis. So it's interesting what happens in life as you meet people. But in the end I'm still just an engineer and mostly into the electronics and software used in aerospace applications.

IMO the upcoming F9R is a misguided attempt at modernization. Going from mid-engine to front engine is a (giant) step back. BTW neither of these items is in my budget.
@sburns24212 жыл бұрын
Front engine has major advantages for building a kit car and sourcing a drivetrain, specifically the difficulty and expense of the transmission required for mid-engine. Some companies like SuperLite now sell transmissions specifically for their car, but they are very expensive (Graziano for SLC is north of $14k by the time you get the transmission and the other parts needed). Front engine you could buy 400hp V8, clutch, and new Tremec for about that much. It definitely looks more racy with the engine in the back, and with lighter engines than a big American V8 as the F9R will use, some dynamic benefit as well. Keep in mind any kit is also intended to have a fairly simple (albeit powerful) drivetrain as well, with varying tarmac surfaces and a huge powerplant behind the driver with RWD (and no real electronic nanny devices), you will see more than a few in ditches. The F9R appears to have its engine very far back from the front of the car, in a sense it is mid-engine as the weight is distributed to get close to the 50/50 desired. Don't be surprised when the F9R is raced against a GTM of the same tires and hp if it is actually faster around the track.
@elementaljosh2 жыл бұрын
@@sburns2421 you hit the nail on the head, but also I doubt any engine with 12 cylinders could possibly be lighter than an aluminum block LS. As somebody who built an ls6 swapped Miata (with some help from v8roadsters) I can attest a true corvette or gen IV 6.2 motor from an Escalade/Denali with an aluminum block is equal or lighter than a factory Miata 1.6. Yes, the Miata has an iron block and DOHC which adds weight but really I doubt you’ll find anything lighter than GM’s aluminum block 5.3, 5.7(ls1/6), 6.0(ls2), 6.2(ls3/l99/l92) or 7.0 ls7. Even doing something like an all aluminum Honda k24 will start racking up lbs when you add the turbo necessary to keep up with the v8 guys. There’s a reason Factory 5 has Chevy gen III/IV mounts tucked in the back of the catalog for their Shelby Cobra replicas. It may be sacreligous but it works just a little too well together for it not to be offered. Performance will always bridge brand loyalty, and as awesome as the 5.0 coyote or modular 4.6 are, overhead cam will never be as compact or light as a good ol American pushrod v8

Considering the entire body is going to be made of carbon fiber, unless you've got a TON of money they won't ever be on the same level let alone a direct replacement

@@wingchangwow Agreed and with todays market building one of those isn’t even worth it unless as you said you have a ton of money PLUS ANOTHER TON ON TOP OF THAT!!! They are completely destroying the point of built in house super cars. If your spending out 100k just to build it might as well just get a super car.
@MuShinnen2 жыл бұрын
@@Darth_Arashi People are spending that much on kit cars anyway so your logic doesn't make much sense. Affordability isn't the only reason people build kit cars. People build them, because they enjoy working on cars, and want something unique. Neither of those immediately translates to affordable as you might define it. On top of the fact that arguing affordability doesn't make sense, as it's not a universal definition. 100k for a car that can compete with something 3 or 4 times that in price is affordable by comparison.

@@wingchangwow After everything is all said and done, not really. But going back to the title, they are saying the GTM is the fastest car you can build, which isn't true.
@wingchangwow2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeyBaby47 it says "you will ever build" not "you can build". The price tag makes it the most likely candidate for somebody to build when it comes to price to performance compared to the Ultima. For gtm you also don't have to use an LS engine. I've seen builds use 2006 wrx parts which dramatically reduce the final cost
@Archangel30832 жыл бұрын
Fastest car is highly dependent on how you build any car. Calling this the fastest car you’ll ever build is nonsensical.
@wingchangwow2 жыл бұрын
@@Archangel3083 are you ever going to build a car? More than one? Well this could very well be the only one you ever consider building. No sense in arguing over semantics when the title is left to interpretation
