Thanks for the video and going through all that data. It is really hard work. I think you may find that it will be easier to summarize your results if you just use tables to compare like things so that you and your viewers don’t have to remember anything. We don’t really need to see the benchmark tools running (once or twice in a video is fine just to establish what software you are using). This is important stuff to me so I will keep coming back for more. Merry Christmas!

I love that you actually showed the render R/W values. All the KZbin “experts” always skip over this and only compare benchmarks and large volume x-fer. Yeah its nice when you have 500GB to move that it goes twice as fast. But in practical use in your editing timeline performance and render speeds the drive speed is a negligible difference, and often isnt worth the price tag.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Yep. In this case it’s just a matter of paying extra for that upgradability, but otherwise the performance is pretty much aligned with pre-built solutions. In many use cases that is. Glad it was helpful.

As usual, a great video. I have heard and personally found that there is no actual need to render prior to export if you can playback the timeline and effects pretty smoothly. If that is happening, when you export without doing a render first, the export time is essentially the same as if you would have rendered already. Give it a try on the M1.
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Yep, I agree. I wanted to be able to address several workflows as I know everyone has their own process. I’ve worked with background render on and off. It’s a nice feature that can also get annoying if one little change is made and it wants to re-render the timeline 🙄 But yes, I do tend to go back to double check stabilization or any kind of optical flow just to make sure. On the M1, it just makes it so much easier to do these things. I’ve never had a machine this capable and I’ve had some fairly powerful PCs in the day. The future with this architecture (for both PC and Mac) is bright 😎 Appreciate you hanging out friend. Always thankful for the community here 👊

Are you using the Extreme Pro v1 or v2 in this video? It seems you link to the V1 on Amazon (while you write upgraded model in the text), so I must guess that's the V1 (the one capped at 1050MB/s) that you are using? Too bad that M1 (with supposedly USB4) doesn't have USB 3.2 Gen2x2 support to support the 2000MB/s USB SSD drives out there..
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
It’s the G25 version, so 1050MB/s, but there’s also two versions of this and the 2000MB/a version as well, so it’s pretty confusing. And yeah, unfortunate about the throughput on these TB3 controllers.

Great video...all of your "leg work" on this video...and why I subscribed. Others have also reported this same Thunderbolt performance issue on the M1s. Do you know if Apple has acknowledged the problem and indicated if they are working on a fix?
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! As far as Apple acknowledging this, I believe they are aware. They have to be. I just spent a solid two days on just this video alone (and many more before I got this TB3 enclosure). I’m hoping we’ll get one of those Big Sur updates that’ll fix this, but it’ll also probably be buried in the info section as a “TB3 improvement” like it’s magic 😀 But seriously I’m really just hoping this has something to do with how Big Sur has to also function on these intel machines and it’s a kernel issue that can be patched. I’m sure there are a few folks out there testing harder than I am trying to figure this out. There’s definitely an Apple team that goes through these videos, the online forums and support communities looking for common issues. This would definitely be one of them 😉 If I get wind of a fix, I’ll definitely be posting it. Happy to have you around here. 👊
@jetmartin95014 жыл бұрын
@@KevinRossRN Thanks...I just hope that the fix is a software fix and doesn't require a HW change. I just bought a new Macbook M1 system and I'm looking to do 4K60 video editing directly from the external drive (SanDisk Extreme 1TB)...From your video it looks like even with the existing performance limitations of M1's TB3 there should be enough throughput to accomplish my objective. Right?

Yes. You’re going to have plenty of bus throughput. Not sure which codec you’re working with, but this A7siii footage and the R5 footage I worked with is tough, and it had no problems. But agree, I hope it’s a software fix.

Guess this is the most sustainable solution (ecologically and economically). Using a screwdriver shouldn't be too hard. Agree?

Thanks brother. And yes, a very unusual finding indeed. @@KevinRossRN So relatable! My first “interface” actually was a Zoom H4 which I share with a friend (we split the bill lol), so having a personal dedicated interface now (soon with drivers for M1 and Big Sur) is just great! Now, this video just made me realize I’m still not sure what to buy, I also saw a review of a Sabrent SSD on enclosure, and now this options. Maybe will just have to wait until Apple says something about the performance issues. Well I was going to wait anyway since my order will take time and I’m out of cash for now, so this was just curiosity for future investments

No harm in doing a little research. I did look at the Sabrent enclosure first, but after heavy deliberation, I figured this one would serve the type of SSD I got and how I am using it, and having the small fan in it is nice. Funny thing that the fan kicks in on the enclosure more often than the mini. Yeah, with the testing that I’ve been doing I was a bit miffed a out these benchmarks, especially on the mid tier read and write. We’re still limited by what the program is writing at, but obviously a faster drive with higher throughput will help some, but the just hope we can get some kind of update that will open up that throughput on these TB3 controllers. There’s a slim chance that Apple is going to come right out and admit that this is an issue, so I think a low key “update” in the code may get buried in one of these Big Sur updates...I hope. The efficiency of the M1 though is still such a massive gain in productivity for many of us though.

Just an FYI... you don't need to render before you output to any format with the more recent version of FCP... The output process now includes rendering as a default function... Your output time might be a little bit better if you have rendered, but it will end up being the same amount of time either way... FCPX is simply writing a file with the manipulations you have determined... rather than rendering and then writing the file from the rendered version as it used to do... I'm pretty sure that this has been the case for a while now... It's been a while since I had to render and then only so for smooth playback when I had a lot of filters on something.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I have some follow up videos to this one where background rendering is off and I just export. And yes, it’s roughly the same amount of time. I’ve been using FCPX for awhile so with this iterative updates some of these older habits are harder to get rid of. But again, I do agree. 😉

It's nice to have super high speed external storage, but I doubt it's a critical requirement for the vast majority of people, even they are processing a fair amount of video. I do about an hour's worth of video editing a week. I only ever keep the files associated with the current project on the local disk because it's only when I'm actively working on that project does disk performance impact production. As soon as the project is finished, and I'm ready to move onto something else, I transfer the files to external storage, freeing up the local disk space for the next project. Unless you follow a practice like this there is no amount of internal storage that will ever be enough - it's only a question of WHEN you are going to run out, so it's an essential habit to get into. The matter to be determined then, is how to optimise the use of the different types of storage available to maximise performance where you need it, and minimise cost where you don't. The time taken to archive files is generally not critical to any work output, certainly doesn't impact video processing work, and can happen while you're engaged in other activities and so within limits it doesn't really matter how long it takes. All you need to calculate, therefore, is what constitutes your true 'working space', and size your high-performance/high-cost storage (whether built-in or external) accordingly. For all other storage, performance is secondary, and you are better to save money/increase capacity. Obviously, if you need to revisit a project that's been archived there will be an overhead in retrieving it, but that should only be an occasional event and so a minute extra here or there makes no difference. People often believe they need something that they don't, when what they actually need is to work more efficiently.

The AMOUNT OF RAM in the machine will also have an impact AFTER the file has been loaded. Less RAM and you'll be going back to the SSD to read the file. I’ve been looking at a TB3 external drive array to assist in moving my stored archives etc out of an old Mac Pro 5,1. Another thing I’m looking at is replacing the 3.5 drives with shuttles to take one or two NVME drives per shuttle and then raid them, to see if that helps with lowering heat to each, given that they’re in theory only relying on half the file being written or read from each of the drive pairs. It should be interesting, that’s for sure.

@@KevinRossRN I think it’s the 970’s I’ve got on order. I think I’ve got 2 Tb sticks, given the price to performance ratio is pretty outstanding. My guess is that it won’t be that long til every slot is at least 4Tb, as the higher end gets cheaper to access.

I think with the RAID setup you may not notice the difference, however I’d still be curious. With TB3 on the Mac I’m seeing that cache limit on the 970 causing it to throttle on large transfers vs. the SN750 maintaining its throughput. However, with 3.1 Gen 2 protocol, the 970 will hold steady.

Go to the Properties settings for the drive (right click on the File Explorer drive icon, for example). Then go to the Hardware tab. Click the Properties button. On the second Properties window on the General tab, click the Change Settings button. You will need Admin privileges/password. Go to the Policies tab, in the Removal Policy box. Click the Better Performance radio button. Then you can check the Enable write-cache box. Note that this could damage the volume if your enclosure is disconnected somehow while the system is writing to the drive. And the USB-C connectors (Thunderbolt 3) are famous for being a bit loose. This will help a spinning HD with a SATA interface. I believe it will help an SSD more, especially if it is on an NVM.e interface. @@KevinRossRN yes 16gbs of ram. Both best quality and better performance are dropping frames. So to recap - I’m editing off the internal SSD - final cut is on internal ssd - a7siii - 4K 60 and 120 8 bit. Grades, speed ramps, 3rd party titles. And I’m getting really laggy performance and dropping frames especially once speed ramps are added. Hitting play while editing there is a second delay lag. Tried with background render off - it lags. Once it’s render it doesn’t lag. But it’s still just painful to edit like this. Have you done any tests straight off of the internal ssd? Did you experience this? Wondering if I should start a fresh library ( this one is from my iMac - which I ever experienced any of this and I was editing of an older HDD )
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’ve done a lot of tests in the internal. One thing I will say is that I did manually port in all of my third party plugins. If there was an issue, I moved it out. There was one from Pixel Film (can’t remember off the top of my head) that I was testing and I got FCP to crash...purposely. Once I removed it out of the templates folder, it was all good. Basically, I didn’t do a transfer “my Mac” info from a time machine backup. I did a clean install of everything. You really should be cutting that footage like nothing. What happens if you disable those third party titles? And to your point, any projects I had on my old machine and earlier 10.4.6 version of FCP, I didn’t upgrade them. I just started with a brand new library and exported the timeline via the XML option in FCP and re-linked the media into the new timeline. That could be a way to test it. 🤷♂️

So as far as the read and write, have you tested other synthetic benchmarking apps, and have you tried to run a task like editing (or similar) on both the internal and the external enclosure? Also, do you happen to have an external monitor connected to your MBP?

@@KevinRossRN Well, after your feedback I did an Amazon return and received a replacement unit. I just tested it and it's much faster! 2300 MB/s read and 2500 MB/s write speeds. Turns out I did indeed get a bad unit. Thanks for your help! Also, the supplied cable now works too

I bought a Sabrent Thunderbolt 3 M.2 NVMe SSD Solid Aluminum Enclosure is this equal to the enclosure on this video? Also test it with Gen 4 MVNE
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
So do keep in mind that the Gen 4 SSD will only perform as fast as the enclosure will allow. I haven’t tested the Sabrent, but others in the community here have and some reported good results while others had a mixed experience. The real difference between the Sabrent and the USB4 is the comparability with non thunderbolt devices.

Get the Sabrent XTRM-Q Tb3 Nvme, it’s affordable, extremely fast and compact. Downside is that it gets hot when doing large transfers.
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the thermal management was my concern. I had reached out to Sabrent with a specific question, but never heard back 🤷♂️ But yes, it can definitely be an option for many. Is this what you have?
@dustinwongphotos4 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that despite the temps it’s all within the design specs. So they are saying it won’t be an issue. I guess you will have to trust their internal testing validation. I have the 8tb. So far working smoothly, but haven’t done benchmarks or large exports. To me if you have a TB port and can afford it the Sabrent is way better than the SanDisk and some people don’t want to tinker and build something themselves. For those people I think the XTRM is the best one out there at the moment.
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think the tinkering may put some people off, although it’s not difficult, however plug and play is what most are interested in. I’m sure I’ll be testing a Sabrent version at some point. It was actually my first pick, but then this Fledging enclosure crossed my path.

@@KevinRossRN id be interested to see if the XTRM Q drive also suffers on write performance w the M1. TB controllers are not all equal.
@KevinRossRN4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I looked at that to review as well. I’d honestly like to have several of these enclosures to test against each other.

Could I use this Shell/Rocket combo along with an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter to boot up a mid-2014 MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt 1)? I’m nursing this old MBP until the new 14” M1x MBP comes out in July-August.
@KevinRossRN3 жыл бұрын
TB3 is backward compatible and with the right adapters it should work, however I haven’t tested this because I don’t have a TB2 or TB1 Mac to test it on. Unfortunately 🤷♂️

I’m still waiting for new M1x in i mac 27inch 32Gigs ram - hopefully no longer then April 2021 -

@@KevinRossRN I’m sure we are going that as well - my A7S3 / ninja V coming Monday - I’ll just have to transcode using my current late 2014 5K I Mac fully loaded - although I can definitely edit multi cam 4K from A7S2 Camera codec -

Very nice! I just love that footage. I’ve had a few folks send me their footage and it’s just jaw dropping what that camera produces. Here’s to hobbling along on your current setup and that you don’t have to wait too long. 😉

The 4k 120p is insane! I finally put it through it's paces yesterday and oh my God it's gorgeous straight out of the camera and the auto focus is amazing
