Joe I need to say something from the heart. I have to imagine it gets tedious making videos that you feel like you’ve made before. I want you to understand that this is by far the best content on the internet for someone who’s ready to take a practical approach to improving their wellbeing. There will never be enough of these videos. So if you ever find yourself editing another one and wonder do I really need to make this one? The answer is always yes
@JoeDelaneyy
@JoeDelaneyy Ай бұрын
I appreciate that. I have of course thought about this and the way I see it is this: once you've covered the basics, you have two choices. First option, you can go beyond the basics - talk about new research, get deeper and deeper into the minutiae of lifting/nutrition/exercise science. The second option is to repeat yourself, but try to do it in fun/engaging ways either to reinforce the core ideas to a current audience, or to reach a new audience. I do tend to opt for the second option for a few reasons. I'm simplifying, but in general I think most people only need the basics to get where they want to get and much of the science is either not conclusive enough yet or focuses on things that actually don't matter that much in the real world. The simple fact that KZbin video success depends on striking titles/thumbnails already introduces a bit of a conflict of interest and probably leads to some people over-emphasising some of these topics. There is nothing wrong with training 'optimisation', of course, and simply trying to get the most out of the time you spend in the gym. But when calculating your return on investment, you have to factor in the time and mental energy you expend outside of the gym learning and thinking about all these 'finer details'. My final reason is that I actually find a lot of the research mind-numbingly boring - I do keep pretty up-to-date to make sure I'm not giving outdated advice. For most of my videos, the majority of viewers are actually new viewers, which makes me feel a bit better about repeating myself. I also enjoy the process of making videos, even if I personally find the content a little repetitive.

But it adds up over time. It’s also not like most people eat terrible food on the daily. It’s the small calorie surplus over years that catches up to you. Could also just be life circumstances and not having fitness as a priority before you realise you’re at a new high bf%. I mean this as the biggest possible compliment, but I still struggle with the dichotomy of my initial impression of you (based solely and very shallowly off your looks) being an absolute gymbro and fboy, yet delivering some of the best mix of science-based and psychologically-sound lifting and dieting advice going around. It's like my brain still gets surprised by the well-reasoned and factually-backed advice that you give out and deliver in a very clear and understandable way (while still retaining some great self-deprecating humour). Plus the production quality and editing keeps getting better and better! Love your work, even if you may feel you're just repeating the same basic stuff that most people should be able to learn for themselves with few hours of proper research (yet you know they won't).

- Fastest way to reach 10% body fat: - Create a large calorie deficit by minimizing calorie intake and maximizing calorie burn. - This approach compromises: - Long-term sustainability - Muscle mass retention - Overall health and well-being - Modified fast approach for feeling and looking okay: - Reduce calories to a level that is manageable in terms of hunger and energy. - Track intake, prioritize protein, fat, and micronutrients. - Use high-satiety foods and hot/carbonated drinks to manage hunger. - Split training between cardio and resistance exercises. - Cardio: Choose activities that burn the most calories. - Resistance: Focus on compound movements with hypertrophy rep ranges. - Ensure adequate rest. - Outcome: Fastest reasonable path to 10% body fat with moderate appearance and well-being. - Potential drawbacks of the fastest approach: - Sacrifice in muscle retention and overall appearance. - Unpleasant and energy-depleting process. - Slower, more sustainable methods lead to minor, occasional discomfort. - Using a body composition scale (sponsor info): - Measures body weight and composition, including body fat percentage. - Provides detailed metrics (subcutaneous, visceral fat, BMR, heart rate). - Helpful to monitor fat loss and muscle gain accurately. - Speed of fat loss: - Harder to lose fat as body fat decreases. - Example calculation: - Starting from 20% body fat at 180 lbs (36 lbs fat). - Goal: Lose ~20 lbs of fat to reach 10% body fat. - Estimate: Lose about 25 lbs overall to reach 10% (including glycogen, water, slight muscle loss). - Expected timeline: 12-16 weeks for a realistic, health-conscious approach. - Personal anecdote on slow cutting: - Slow diet with frequent lapses led to an 8-month cut. - Result: Maintained/gained muscle, no fatigue or hunger. - Lesson: Slow, steady fat loss is beneficial for non-bodybuilders. - Best way to reach 10% body fat: - Set calories at a sustainable deficit (~0.5-1% body weight loss per week). - Prioritize protein, fat, high-satiety foods, and low-impact cardio (e.g., cycling or swimming). - Emphasize resistance training over cardio (75-80% resistance). - Rest adequately, take creatine, manage stress, enjoy occasional treats. - Aim for steady progress with minimal discomfort for optimal appearance and well-being. - Closing advice: - Recommendations based on personal experience; individual approaches may vary.

People should remember they aren't competitive bodybuilders (unless they are). Throw the scales away, eat a sensible diet prioritising protein and fat with little to no junk/processed food. Train to be the healthiest and strongest version of yourself. If you feel good and look mint in the mirror it doesn't matter how much you weigh or what your body fat percentage is.

most natural competitive bodybuilders I've seen the last two years or so have been moving towards longer cuts of 20+ weeks and all of them are looking better than they ever have. I've done multiple 8-10 week cuts and theres always a point where I feel I look great, push a little too hard and end up not loving the final result. I haven't gone through a longer cut yet as I'm still bulking but I look forward to being a little more patient this time around and seeing what it brings.

Keeping my muscles while going *dry* as a vegetarian is hard but not impossible. I try to eat 6-7 eggs a day for protein and taking 7-8gram creatine (I don't get much from food). Great video, great advice/method. Didnt know the term "diet fatigue" before but it is very real and my exact experience. I dont really think I buy into the idea of constant low calorie dieting being about willpower anymore. It's something a naive PE teacher would tell his, what he thinks are lazy, students. Your body has physical limitations. If your body doesnt want to continue dieting, it will make you stop. Talking down on yourself wont help anything and is simply unrealistic & honestly childish. Obviously one shouldnt make it into an excuse but use this idea for being honest to oneself. My 2ct on the topic.

I always find that when I cut, the first 3 weeks goes super well, and then I just hang out. Like this summer I went from 187 to 182 in about 3 weeks, in a 15% deficit. Then did a few days of a diet break as I went out of town, but was still pretty good about my food, and walked a TON so if anything I highly doubt I was in a surplus. But right back to it after I got back, still around 182, and then for like 6 weeks it just stayed between 181.5 and 182.5. My step count was up a few thousand steps per day. I was still pushing the weights like I was during my bulk. Idk what happens. I feel like the math never adds up when I try cutting. I prioritize sleep, recovery, nutrition, weight training, increasing activity but not so hard that I can't recover, etc. So then I usually just hover back and forth between like 14-16%. I've since reverse dieted my way back up to around 2,850 calories (from around 2,300) and I'm still around 182. Going to try to give the cut another go here before long, but it just always seems unsuccessful.

Another great video. Cheers Joe. How do you approach plateau’s? I’ve been training 4 times a week and cut back to virtually no cardio outside of 20-30 mins walking a day. My deficit is about 400 calories and I’m hitting my macros pretty closely. I can train another couple of days to get some more walking in or drop some volume and sneak in some higher intensity work at the end of my existing weight training. I reckon I could drop calories a bit more but feel like the strength and energy drop off isn’t worth it. Feels like my best results in the past were only when I upped the cardio or dropped calories to 1,500 a day for about a month (I’m around 170lbs and about 5’9).😢

I not been on a diet just stayed eating the same as before I started. I tracked for a bit just to check. I eat around 2200, 2500 cals a days. If I go out at weekends, I save my gym cals for a Then 🤣seems to work. People take too much on, when you first start going to the gym 3 times a week gives you 1000-1,500 cals so either save it for weekend or don’t. When you don’t use it, you loose weight. Lots of people who start overweight also reward themselves after a workout, big mistake. Good video joe those scales look sick.

I just started a cut after a couple of years of not training, being lazy, and not eating properly, going from about 15% body fat to nearly 25%. I’m now tracking all my macros, following a healthy non processed, high protein low fat moderate carbs diet and averaging about a 1000 calorie defecit each day, while training hard 4 times a week and keeping my daily steps above 10k. In my first week I lost just over 2kg (about 4.5 pounds), my second I lost only 0.5kg (1.1 pounds) and in my third week I’ve gone up in weight slightly (0.5kg or 1 pound). I don’t trust the body fat % much on my cheap scales, but it says my body fat % also went up by 0.5% this third week after losing 2.5% in the first couple. Is this possible while in a significant deficit, training regularly and eating low fat/ moderate carbs? Or have I just gained muscle and my scales are whack? I know I’m super early days at only week 3 but it feels demoralising and a bit confusing and I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong?

This only makes sense once you have a solid foundation like he did at 8:16. His starting physique is a lot of people's desired physique. The majority of Americans are overweight or obese so losing weight at the slowest possible rate (which is the ideal to maintain muscle mass) doesn't make sense when you're fat. Fat people lose motivation and quickly seeing results can be a great motivational boost to maintain the new lifestyle. After you burn the fat then you can follow this advice regarding clean bulking and slow cutting

For the first two time it work very well i lost 11 kg in a week, but after the first two that method doesn't work anymore. Sometime i will retain the same weight for 5 days and at the end of the week only lost 1-2kg and the fat on my belly wont go away giving me a skinny fat look

I was at the beach and pools all summer and I saw less than 1% of the total male population even approaching what appeared to me to be a true 15% body fat. in most environments in america where men are taking off their shirt even the faintest hint of abs is more than enough to totally stand out. this applies even more so for men older than 35! so the goal really should be to get to 15% body fat slowly and with as much muscle as you can. i think that will take significantly less time than 10%, which as you said, is much harder than getting to 15% Anyone that doubts what I am saying here is spending way too much time on social media and far less in the real world seeing what actual men out here look like today in the US Put it this way- if we are talking about attracting women as the main reason to get that lean I don't think I've ever met a single woman on this planet that has rejected me because i was 15% body fat rather than 10%. Even at 15% you stand out for being very fit and lean and discplined to get there. the determination of whether someone finds you attractive will then be made on OTHER metrics (social confidence, conversation, personality fit)

Joe; you should look into the papers by Bill Campbell’s group in Florida. He’s done the studies on muscle retention and rapid weight loss in trained individuals!

Any recommendations on which walking pads are good. I'm afraid of wasting money buying crap on Amazon.

Long term calorie restriction destroys your resting metabolic rate because when you restrict calories your body compensates by reducing your energy expenditure. It kills your energy and makes you feel like crap. And because of the reduced metabolism most people who lose weight that way wind up gaining it all back and more eventually.

I think losing it over shorter period of time is much easier tbh, sticking with a calorie deficit for weeks and months is much more difficult for me then going aggressive for 5-6 weeks

I almost bought a pipette off Amazon to drop the milk in, but figured I was getting a bit too caught up in the b-roll 😂

I tried walking for 3 whole months. Went from sedentary to 15-17k steps which is a LOT. It changed absolutely nothing, didn't look any different, didn't weight any different and same for tape measurements. Took like 2.5hours of walking a day and it felt like I did nothing.

use an air bike for 5 rounds of 4 mins every morning but don't actually go full effort , instead just do 10 seconds at 75% - 20 seconds at 30% the remaining 10% is the room left to clear lactic acid 5 x 4 mins 20 mins a day worked a charm

Hi Joe, it doesn't look like the link you provided adds any additional discount compared to just going through google link, could you check if that's correct? Thanks a lot
