I have had 1 million anxiety and panic attacks. The best things for me personally was: dont resist what you feel, accept and let it flow through you, it may be like an intense river, but it is a heck of a lot better than that building up and up to more and more tension. The second thing was this: one by one as you go along life, take the biggest things you fear or are unhappy about and accept it. This takes time, but it is life changing. Acceptance is not defeat, if anything you are defeating the effect the situation/feeling has on you.

You’re absolutely right. I experienced panic attacks in my life. I didn’t know what to do to calm myself down but after so many disappointments, i began to take deep breaths and accept. By talking to God I was able to accept. But most people are unable to accept they panic and get in a very stressful situation for days or weeks. The acceptance is hard to teach because evwrybody is different. It takes patience to coach this to someone. However some people who continue accept disappointments could eventually lose hopes. Believing that nothing would ever change for them.

Hey! I'm writing this because I grasp what you are going through. But: despite that you are being left absolutely devastated, I think your sister knew what she was doing. "Normal" Healthy people can't understand the idea of suicide. But if you are depressed, every day feels like the day before and your life becomes a loop of miserable days and feelings. Eventually you figure that living another 10, 20, 30 years in this mode is just plain toture. There is no doubt: Of course she thought of you, but she could not continue anymore and made the decision to end her life. In her perspective she knew that she has outlived all her good days and all the good things to seek. Healthy and normal people have hard times to understand this, but if you have depression you know that in her perspective it made sense to end her life. Nonetheless I know she did so while being grateful for all the good years and people (especially you) who tried to make her life worth living and surely succeeded in giving her more days that can be considered "good". I know it's hard, but don't accuse yourself for this! Just accept that your sister was sick and felt so miserable that continuing would not have made sense. It's not your fault and you could not have helped or "heal" her. I'm sure your sister was thankful for having you in her life, but in the end no one but she could overcome the power of her depressive mind/state and she knew that she can not and that continuing for the sake of all the people around her would just feel like torture. Be sorrow. Be angry. But eventually be proud of your sister that she did her best and found a way to find peace. Be thankful for all the good days you have had together, I bet everything I have that your sister was thinking of those wonderful days when she did put an end to her (in her pespective torturous) existence in a grateful and thankful manner.

Blessings to you, first of all. Second, I can relate having had panic attacks after my mother’s suicide. I thought it was blood sugar problems because I would feel faint and dizzy. Then realized it was anxiety. Journalling really helped..doing “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron helped tremendously to express the grief. It takes time..having daily rituals like journalling, practicing the breathing through nose, walking, it all helps to move the grief through you and out of you..I am sorry for your loss..one step at a time, one minute at a time. Prayers for your peace of mind, and that you can get some rest.

If you are indeed hyperventilating due to a panic or anxiety attack, then rebreathing (breathing in a paper bag) for a few seconds can do wonders for calming you down. When I use to get anxiety attacks I would just bend my head down and pull my shirt up over my nose and breathe in and out through my nose for about 60 seconds and it worked every time. You are basically breathing in and out between the space of your shirt and your chest and it allows for rebreathing to take place. Hope this makes sense!

I had a heart monitor hooked up for two weeks to find out what was going on, and even had a MRI of my brain, and it was concluded that they were simply panic attacks. I can tell you that the worst thing you can do, is allow that fear to overtake you, and your panic becomes much worse. Just breathe baby just breathe.

I had my first panic attack last year in the middle of the night while sleeping. It woke me up and I couldn’t figure out why my heart was racing and why I was experiencing those symptoms. I went to urgent care and it calmed down before I got there but it made me feel like I was dying! However, after a couple more, I felt like my heart had a familiar very slight ‘ache’ that reminded me when I had adrenal fatigue 14 years ago. I remembered that I had to take B Complex to help with that so I researched whether a B vitamin deficiency was correlated with ‘panic attacks’ and sure enough, there was! I started taking a good B Complex vitamin daily and I haven’t had any since then.

A rare and concise breakdown of the physical cause and process that goes on behind panic attacks and how to self-correct through breathing. Love the simplicity and the understanding that puts a sense of “I can take control of this” in the moment. Just having that knowledge is the beginning point to reducing the intensity of the panic when it surfaces. Practicing deep breathing exercises daily sets up success. Much better than popping anxiety pills, dealing with side effects…and STILL experiencing out of control panic attacks. Who has more incentive to correct health problems, yourself or big pharma?

There are a few more things (techniques) one can use: cold shower (the best but very unpleasant), washing your face with cold water or a cold compress on your neck, and the 54321 method. I used all of those techniques and it helped me getting through my panic attacks.

I believe this breathing pattern has helped me tremendously lately with COVID and having asthma and twice suffering with pneumonia in the 90’s. My o2 levels are higher and my lungs feel better, especially if I step outside to do my breathing several times a day.

I now have Open Nose Syndrome due to a botched facial surgery. My turbinates don't let me breathe normally. I often have panic attacks. Each time I inhale the pain is unbearable in my nose, sinuses, and throat, and the deeper I try to inhale the worse the pain, increasing the panic. Most people commit suicide w/ONS. It's so scary.

Try not to be alone if possible and do understand that it takes time to completely get rid of panic attacks. It neither comes nor goes suddenly. Little patience.
@CONNELL195112163 ай бұрын
It works for me! The only difficulty I had initially was to convince myself that I wouldn't pass out by limiting my breathing. I find it helps to mentally count out the seconds rather slower than normal, and to insert a short period of holding my breath between each inhalation and exhalation

Thank you for posting this!!!! I've recently been suffering from possible heart conditions, but this makes lots of sense!! I have all of the same problems, but when I have my episode, the nurse who gave me the first ultrasound thing said Mio Coronary? Not Carditus, at least not yet. I've changed my diet, no caffeine, less stress at work, seems to help but sometimes I'll feel my heart take off!!! But at a few points, it felt like someone was putting a knife through the bottom of my heart from my back, that's why I had a Mio diagnosis.

Excellent advice.. it does take some practice. Ignoring the terror of not being able to breath feels like a mind exercise for a meditation practice, focusing on the act of breathing slower INSTEAD of on the feeling like I’m dying is challenging. Good news, the more I have done this exercise the easier it has become. Thank you for sharing all of your terrific information, it is very helpful and much appreciated!👍

Yeah . It works brilliantly... I had panic attacks when I was 16.. I found this new way through meditation . Now I am 27 and I do meditate for 5min a day and never had panic or hiccups since then. When i instruct others the same they never believed . Finally I found someone who explains science behind it .

I've been having panic attacks since I was a child (due to trauma), never diagnosed, I was just a clingy nervous child as per my parents description. They started getting worse in my adulthood after a robbery, now finally doctors found out I hyperventilate and this, together with a viral infection, left me paralized one week ago, it went away after several hours. Thank you, thank you Dr. Berg for this video. People should know more about the topic.

The fastest way I control feeling anxious is to do what's called box breathing. Its basically deep breathing from your diaphragm up to your chest cavity. I found it takes time to practice to actually start feeling calm. It doesn't happen right away but after 10 mins or so I feel I sense of calm and more at ease.

Needless to say I sought medical advice. Learned how to control them pretty quickly and for me..... the slow deep breathing technique works every time, works quicker if I'm outdoors. Kinda cool knowing how and why it works, cheers Doc

Great helpful video Dr Berg. Many thanks. The advice back in the day was to breathe into a paper bag and you’ve explained very eloquently why this is helpful. We are breathing back in CO2. I wonder if the mask wearing in recent years has made any changes to the severity and occurrence of panic attacks? Just a thought.........🤔

Dr. Berg, this is perfect timing. This is a technique that my singing teacher would insist on doing before every lesson and I would continue this lesson for my own Taekwondo students. BUT how easily we forget and only on Monday just gone I experienced a very stressful situation and naturally started this process while giving myself council that if I allow myself to relax ALL will be fine! Within literally minutes the most helpful person answered my call and they then progressed and solved my enquiry by the end of the day. Breathing relaxed my heart my mind my body then allow “everything” to flow freely. Thank you for reminding me of this most valuable technique. 😊 Oh my last singing lesson was thirty years ago. 😊

This information is an answer to prayer. Really been struggling the past few days (especially with waking up in the middle of the night distressed and bad dreams) and my intuition has been telling me it's panic attacks, although I've only had one of those quite awhile ago when I tried to wear a mask in the grocery store. Now I have some tools to take control of it. Also explains why my oxygen levels have been fine when I'm feeling like I can't get enough air. Thank you sooooo much, Dr. Berg!
