My philosophy as a doctor has always been connect first, educate second. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. And this goes for all relationships, not just doctor-patient.
Good communication is something we’d all like to master. And today’s guest, Charles Duhigg, author of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection, is here to help us do it. A graduate of Harvard Business School and Yale College, Charles has won a prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his investigative reporting and he is also the author of international bestselling book, The Power of Habit, which has sold over 10 million copies to date.
We start off our conversation, talking about habits, and why it is that so many of us struggle to make our new desired behaviours stick. The brain wants rewards and it needs cues. The trouble is we tend to let both of those things go, once we think a behaviour is becoming routine. But Charles shares that that’s exactly when we need to double down and take steps to make our new behaviours feel more enjoyable. We also discuss the science of small wins, momentum and the importance of keystone habits.
We then move on to talking about the importance of good communication. Good communication is inherently rewarding. It’s how humans connect, form families, villages, and share information. Charles believes all of us are capable of being supercommunicators and having more meaningful conversations. And during this episode, he explains some of the skills involved, such as mirroring others and asking deeper questions - those that probe feelings not facts.
Finally, we talk about how fear of saying the wrong thing can often stop us from being vulnerable and connecting, why supercommunicators ask 10 to 20 times more questions than the average person and how they often shine in group situations, not by being the ‘ideas person’, but by giving the right people a spotlight.
This was a truly wonderful conversation - full of practical insights to help you build better habits and become a better communicator in all aspects of your life.

Hello Dr. Chatterjee, This podcast was amazing. The 2 hours and 15 minutes flew by! The exchange between yourself & Mr. Duhigg was energetic & tangible. I have been investing time & energy in creating new habits for myself. I find this extremely challenging. Decades of conditioned bad habits are deeply rooted. However, I am not throwing in the towel. Not a chance. I keep going. When I choose "the easy way out", I don't bash myself on the head anymore. I pick myself up and move forward. The second part of the podcast regarding communication was fascinating. So much resonated with me. Thanks to this discussion, without ever knowing this about myself, I am a super communicator. I have learned important "golden nuggets" from this tonight. There is no doubt in my mind that my communication skills will now become more thoughtful.....and helpful both to myself and to those with whom I am speaking with, or listening to. (The example you gave about your wife needing you to simply listen to her and not for you to provide a solution was an eye opener! Big time! I was due for this awareness!! Once again, thank you very much for this awesome podcast. I am truly grateful 🙏

Excellent conversation as usual. Regarding the communication section, I think it best not to ask the person what kind of conversation they would like. This could be pretty annoying. In light of the fact that you recognize that she wants a listening conversation the vast majority of the time... don't ask, just listen. They'll ask you for your advice if they want it. "What do you think I should do?" would be a very clear sign.

Thanks Dr Chatterjee I loved this discussion with Charles. I had a vestibular injury back in 2020 and have fully recovered other than slight inflammation in the area. This put me on a path of doing a morning meditation for the purposes of pain management and this has become my non negotiable daily habit. I now drop into a space in my body where I don't feel myself breathing and can just feel my life force energy vibrating. Most days I'll do about 30-60 minutes each morning and I've even had times where I was meditating for about 2.5 hours so I get lost in time. It is a beautiful way to start the day and sets me up for the rest of the day and also gives me access to intuitive messages 💜

I understand they have to be 'catchy' but I really wish the titles of your videos were more descriptive of who the guest is and what the topic is. I can't tell what to listen to as all the titles sound clickbaity and uninformative.

I realized that if I'm craving ice cream, it's because I haven't eaten enough today plus I need some fats. An avocado or some cottage cheese will fix the craving. Why is so much more important and so often we don't experiment to find what it is

@@seattlegrrlie We may believe that we have free-will but the neuroscience is starting to point to the contrary, the habit loop is a case in point. Check out Robert Sapolsky's perspectives.
