So, in my youth I liked to mountain bike through the wilds of England, Wales and Scotland. There's nothing quite like being stopped by a bush in a remote woodland in Wales because you've accidently cycled into the middle of an army field exercise and you've almost run over some grunt. I swear, I thought I was alone in those woods that day. I was not, I shared that clearing with about a dozen leafy fellas that appeared out of the fucking ethereal realm. And to this day I'm pretty damn sure there were more than that dozen!

There was some talk back in the early 90's that the Army was going to disband the Cav Scouts, and roll them into the Infantry Scouts. I can only assume it didn't happen because. A. The scouts weren't okay with not stacking bodies. Or B. The Infantry said keep those a-holes away from us. BTW Disneyland Barracks sucked at Ft Knox in Jan '91.

They didn't do that, but they did disband a number of Cav and infantry squadrons and reformat them into RSTA squadrons, which typically have a 2 mounted cav troops consisting of 19d's and 1 infantry dismounted recon troop (DRT) consisting of 11B's.

You'll have a platoon of Cav Scouts who actually got really fucking good at the Recon and stealth portion of our job, and then roughly a plussed up Sniper Squad. Loved my time in a Recon Platoon, those bill Nye the science grunts are all a bunch of badasses. They try out for sniper squad, usually a year or so of train up and then they drop a packet to go to Sniper School where they get trained and qualify as Snipers. Returning to their units as battalion level assets of long range surgery. At least that's what my previous battalion did.

I was in an infantry scout platoon and in a LRSD unit at different times. LRSD units used to be Corps or Division until they were deactivated except in the 173rd ICBT (Airborne), the 82nd Airborne Div, 18th Airborne Corps and the 75th Infantry Regiment (Ranger). The rest keep coming and going like a florescent light with a faulty wire somewhere. The difference between Bn recon platoons and a LRSD detachment or company is who you speak to on the radio and the PIR you are gathering. That and LRSD units have scuba and freefall teams, Ranger qualified personnel by MTOE requirements for holding a leadership position. Battalion recon are affectionately referred to as the Bn Commander's hired thugs and will sometimes used in direct action missions such as: sniper/ reconnaissance missions, enemy reconnaissance unit screening and setting up ambushes to act as blocking positions. It's been thirty years since I was in LRS and they might have begun doing those missions, but when I was there they did not. Though they did in Vietnam as Ranger units and LRRP units doing deep insertion ambushes and enemy counter recon patrols and they would call in fire on enemy supply convoys and would snatch and grab enemy soldiers for interrogation. They were pretty much as badass as you can be.

Good Lord, so true. I was Marine Infantry, a scout and a sniper. All of this is truth, except I wouldn't eat anything in the field that would leave a smell, or make a noise being opened. I ate morning chow, drank some water, I'm good for at least a day. We took pride in making our own Ghillie suits. There is an art to fraying and glueing. I threw mine out, and regret it. It's art. The art of survival. When we went in the field, we were slow, patient, silent, invisible, scentless.

Fun fact- there's wild boars in Iraq. Really. I know that because my bestest airborne infantry scout buddy from the Army wanted to climb up a radio tower at night with "a one-ten with a thermal and a suppressor" and pick a few of them off. I managed to talk him out it. 🤣

I was cleaning and repainting my e-tool a few months when my 11year old son Asks why I keep "that old thing around?" So I told him because I love her, and in her day she gave one hell of a lap dance. Then I noticed he was pointing at my e-tool. I took him out to one of our apple trees picked a branch about the size of his wrist, and cut it clean in one swing. The fact is after a radio my rifle and sidearm the e-tool was the the most weapon the army gave me. Hell with a little practice it can even be thrown like an axe

@MarlinB

All of our NCO’s were required to be tabbed and pathfinder. Once selected, if not already we sent you to airborne and air assault. If you were not sniper qualified you knew the job so you could assist in small kill teams. When we could get slots we would send guys to other MOS-Q short courses so we could further utilize them as demolitions, FO’s, or mission dependent 11 chucks. We tried to make our selves as lethal as possible without having to have attachments from outside MOS’s.

Have a friend who was drafted into Vietnam. During training he was on the evade detection course. The next was torture training. He was so good at hiding they had to call over the loud speaker to come back in because they couldn't find him. He told me he was fine not going through torture training and stayed out there for a while. He ended up flying on the plane the would triangulate radio signals in North Vietnam. He said he saw china and Cambodia out his window. Cool guy.

As a former member of CSC 132nd IL ARNG Scout Platoon 30years ago your description brings back memories. As Scouts we would be attached to a company commander who would request recon services. The officers who gave us respect always seemed to do much better on the objective than those who did not. If we liked the officers, and they asked, we would even go with them to take the objective, but if they thought they could simply order us around we would simply say, sorry sir, but we have another assignment we have to report to, jump in our jeep and not look back. We were usually deployed in 3 man teams for our sneak and peak missions and in 6 man teams for our search and destroy missions. Probably because 3 men was the normal complement for a jeep.

When Fat Electrician mentioned that Infantry Scouts are good at stealth, my head immediately went, "Hmmm... Raven Guard." Then he shows the E-Tool and now I think, "Raven Guard WITH a touch of Death Korps of Krieg! Nice."

The "If there's evidence" patch you had in the background reminds me of a day in a class on the laws of land warfare. I painted a "what if" scenario for the instructor who paused, responded "yes, according to what we've just gone over, it absolutely would officially be a war crime." Pause and then, in a conspiratorial tone of voice, he continued "Off the record, does anyone know it was you?....." Pause "Alright, so in this next section we are going to cover......." Everyone there picked up what he was laying down.

The 34th is near and dear to my heart. My great-grandfather commanded the division in WWII and led them through Italy all the way to meet the Russians at the German border. From what I understand, he was loved by his men and led them through combat with unwavering courage. I may be wrong, but never have I heard anything to the contrary.
