How exactly do tabs work when it comes to rank? Is it even considered a rank?

It's not a rank, just a qualification.

I think it's like a warfare device in the navy, but a little different I guess they go to a course for it, we just have to get a bunch of checkouts and do a couple of boards. I don't know if it affects your pay, I know that in the navy I get sea duty pay, sub duty pay, there's another one it's like a family separation allowance. I don't know how much that one is because I don't have a family but the other ones are a few hundred dollars a month, it's nothing crazy but there is some compensation.

Every rank can be a ranger. Guys get ranger contracts in infantry basic training at Ft Benning. Infantry officers are expected to pass ranger school. You have females passing ranger school with help from generals and the army stole the black ranger Beret to make themselves feel better, 🤣the rangers wear a tan Beret now. You can be special forces or airborne and not have a ranger tab. 10th mountain in Ft Drum also have a tab. The patch is 1st special forces group at Ft Lewis, which also has the Second Ranger battalion and 7th ID my old unit.

When I was a parachute rigger at the old Fort Bragg, I had multiple members of my unit who were Rangers and yes they're really tough.

You don't get extra money for passing the school/course per se. Reenlistment bonuses are a different story though. Qualified individuals who are in a Special Operations unit (SF, SOAR, Rangers, etc.) get way higher bonuses to stay in the military than a individual of the same MOS who is in a conventional unit. It's simply because the military has so much invested in their training that they don't want to lose them to private contractors or career fields that desire their skills.

My unit at Ft Ord was light infantry. The 2nd ranger battalion was there and the goal was to go to RIP and ranger school. They moved to Ft Lewis and still have ranger RIP competitions. 75th Ranger regiment is different than a ranger tab. It's an actual unit that saves Delta Force when they are in trouble.

3:05 in the military E1 through E9 or pay grades O1 through O9. That’s base pay on top of that you get additional pay for specializations and whether or not you’re getting hazardous duty pay and a combat multiplier. It’s complicated and could be its own 30 minute video.

Tabs are schools you completed. There is only one tab that you don't have to earn. That is the Mountain Tab. Back before WWII there was a mountain school. Where you would go to be trained to do mountain warfare. That school was loctated in Colorado. That school is still around. But it is not needed anymore.
