Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to Grand Teton National Park in northwest Wyoming. The park is located only about 130 miles to the south of Yellowstone National Park and rivals it with its beauty and wildlife. Elevation in the park starts at 6320 feet in Jackson Hole and stretches to 13,770 feet at the park's highest point, Grand Teton. The barren granite peaks give way to thick forests of pine, fir, and spruce trees with Quaking Aspen groves dominating in pockets across the valleys.
Near Jackson Lake is a trail system that travels eastward to Emma Matilda Lake and Two Ocean Lake. The Emma Matilda Lake Trail encircles Emma Matilda Lake in a loop that runs almost twelve miles. It wanders through meadows and trees as cool breezes waft off the lake to refresh visitors as they hike. Stands of Buffalo Berries offer a tasty treat to passersby and sustain the wildlife in their season. Common animals in this area include Elk, Moose and Mule Deer. Predators in this area include black bears, bobcats, cougars, coyotes, and wolves, but the most powerful are the massive grizzly bears that frequent the trails.
During the second week of August 1994, 36 year old Michael and Linda Dunn were camping with their three children at the Colter Bay Campground along Jackson Lake. Their family had a standing vacation spent at the lake each year and enjoyed the time together each summer.
Michael was thin but athletic, standing 6 feet in height and weighing a healthy 165 pounds. He was a scout leader back in their hometown of Park City, Utah and had even completed bear attack training with his pack of scouts. Michael was a successful senior writer at Fotherington & Associates eventually landing the same position with Bonneville Communications. His life was centered around serving his community and took pride in his campaigns for a major league baseball team as well as the Salvation Army.
Michael and Linda were not only life partners, they were running partners. Together they had completed 50 marathons combined including several ultra-marathons. They valued the lessons running instilled in them, teaching their kids that they could still find joy while doing difficult things. They had even completed an IronMan race together. On this particular day, Michael wanted to go on a longer run and Linda agreed to stay behind with the kids.
As Michael prepared for his early morning run on August 14th, he had a sense of doom wash over him. He knew it was something he would have to work through and hit the trail before sunup Falling into an easy pace, his mind began reflecting on lessons he found valuable. As a member of the Latter Day Saint church he felt running in the mountains helped him clear his mind and meditate. He used his solitary time running to pray and seek direction from God.
As he bounced along the trail he reflected on the prior day's run. That morning had been moistened by the dew and as he entered a meadow he decided it would be a beautiful place for his morning prayers. Inspired by the sunlight breaking across the cloud shrouded peaks, he knelt down and prayed aloud a prayer of gratitude when two words popped into his mind. Play dead. The meaning of these words were confusing to him that morning, but would be very important this morning.
Only a few hundred yards into his run, Michael noticed a strange bush near the trail. Around the base of this bush were several Buffalo Berries that had been dislodged from their stems. The tiny tomato-like fruits led Michael’s eyes to the indelible impression of a very large grizzly bear track deeply embedded into the dirt near the bush.
Perhaps out of nervous relief but definitely as a precaution, Michael decided he would start singing out loud as he ran. He didn’t pack a firearm nor did he pack bear spray on any of his runs.
Around two miles into his run, Michael’s nerves began to settle down, and he quit singing out loud. As he rounded a bend in the trail he was discombobulated by a loud deep rumble just off the trail a few yards from him. At first, he thought a boulder was rolling down the slope but turned around to see a huge grizzly sow bellowing at him from only 15 yards away.
He stared at her as events unfolded in slow motion in his mind. He could see the muscles in the hump on her shoulders ripple as she blew through every limb and bush between them. Popping and cracking sounded as she growled a thundering road as she bore down on him.

Goodness no. Especially in the woods. We got a 6th sence. Gut feeling in the woods matters alot. Goes quiet , no bugs, no wind, no birds, large predator in the area. Usualy you don't notice the silence at first, first you get a feeling somethings wrong, then you notice the silence. Ignore the vibes you do so at your own threat. Been their many times. Sometimes nothing came of it. Other times I discover cougar tracks following my tracks next to the muddy river the next day

I was too slow to type my message during the live but this was an amazing story. I believe his prayer helped him to calm down and stopped panicking and that gave him the ability to play dead and escape death. God promises to be with us but he lets our decisions and circumstances determine our fate. We see believers die horribly sometimes so I don't think He picks and chooses He just loves us. As for how he was barely saved by such slim margins, I do believe God helped. It wasn't Michael's time and Michael was grateful for the serenity God offered that allowed him to live and heal. Great story and I look forward to more.

I believe anytime an inner voice tells you that something is wrong, or possibly can happen, you have to pay attention to it. I do believe that is God's way of talking to us and letting us know danger is in your immediate future. Do not ignore your gut instinct ever. Nothing is a 100% 'guarantee' for surviving a bear attack, however you GREATLY boost those survival odds with proper training/skills and carrying a firearm. To just discard doing anything to prepare for such an event is just plain ignorant.

A gun will definitely help BUT your situational awareness needs to be on or you'll be a victim with a gun somewhere in or near the scene. Its almost a broken record how so many attacks are ambushes under 25 yards. The people are shocked/surprised and frozen then the bear whacks them to the dirt and goes to work on them. Also it seems most bears are coming at a 90 degree angle or close, which means the bear detected their presence long before and set up its ambush position. I see so many parallels between bear danger alertness and officer survival awareness, 90% to bear situations. All the weapons, spray, Tasers and kevlar won't do much good if your awareness is not working. One tip is widen and deepen your view, as too many people walk or run like they drive....looking straight ahead. In this case the guy was focused on his running and his "head was in the zone". You can't prevent every surprise but you can raise odds in your favor with higher awareness. That reminds me I need a better set of electronic ear muffs to pick up sounds better while hunting.
@markstone1619
@markstone1619 4 ай бұрын
@@LuvBorderCollies Agreed. Full time situational awareness is the most vital part. I'll add one more very vital part between awareness & having a gun, which is the gun is only as useful as the amount/level of skills you have in handling & firing it. Skills is a must, whether obtained by ample training or experience.

Whoa, I’m glad he survived and was able to return to his family. I don’t know if he would have had time to use a firearm or bear spray but since he had neither he couldn’t even try. It sounds like he had a close connection to his church and his God which is wonderful, and rare these days but common sense is, in fact, just as important, and unfortunately, equally rare these days. He had feelings of doom, he had a subliminal message delivered to him and….more important, he vacationed in an environment full of any number of extremely dangerous animals. He was woefully unprepared. God can only do so much.

Yeah I'd say the sense of impending doom should have been heeded. That's a strong indicator to abandon your run. He should have just gone back to camp. But he ignored the warning. Then he was told matter of factly to play dead. He ignored that too and punched the bear. So lastly, God caused the bears claws to miss his arteries. Then he caused the bear to run away. I'm not criticizing Michael. I probably would have done the exact same thing as he. I'm glad he survived. What I learned from this is to listen to the impending sense of doom, and change plans. That's my takeaway from Michaels encounter. God help me to have the presence of mind to do so.

I also believe that the noise the bear heard and took off running was devine intervention as well as the "play dead" words he heard in his mind. He was absolutely being watched over by God. It was not Michael's time to leave this world. His children learned a tough lesson seeing their dad in the condition the bear left him. If he continues to run for meditation hopefully he goes with a group of people. I am happy that he survived. It makes him a stronger person.

You can’t believe how many “alone” hikers we saw with zero protection. I was amazed. This man should have known better but I think people believe it won’t happen to them. A study said that only 14% of hikers in Yellowstone carry bear spray. Amazing! That park should require hikers to check out bear spray then turn it in after they finish. Why is this not a good idea? People are clueless these days, sadly!

when I planned some bush hikes out in the US Southwest and West, I thought of the possibility of encountering a bear of one species or another. So I bought a Ruger .357 magnum handgun and holster to carry it for quick draw. Luckily I never encountered one as the chances of this happening in the areas I hiked to were not considered high risk bear country area's. But Wyoming, Montana, Utah? now THOSE are high risk bear country areas. Always pack a handgun and a can of bear spray when running, hiking or bush walking in these areas - ALWAYS.

Can't believe be got a mental warning and ignored it. A sixth sense we all have, however a lot of people have either lost it or ignore it. If something isn't right, then it's not right. If there is a doubt, then there is no doubt. Trust your gut or instincts, whatever you want to call it, if the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, a sudden shiver down your spine, take heed. Of course there are some people who are just born victims. Be prepared, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. I reckon he used up all his luck that day.

Yes, to all of your questions. People should definitely listen to their "gut" feelings. If God or a guardian angel said. "Play dead" I would have immediately done so. One evening, over twenty years ago I had just attended a dance class I had enrolled in after work, one night a week. The studio was located in a small strip mall just off one of the main roads in town. The light merging back into traffic on the main road was a long wait, upwards to two minutes. It was dark, I had sat and waited for the light to change and just as it turned green a voice spoke to me, telepathically and said check your package. I immediately looked in my rear view mirror and saw that no one was behind me so I didn't have to worty about a blaring horn behind me. Then I pickrd up my package and turned it over and thought, "It looks okay to me then just as I was about to pull through the green light, a large box truck, very similar ro a UPS truck, but this truck had no signage on it, ran a red light. I would have been ummediateky t-boned in the driver's side. I would have been killed immediately and left a nine year old boy orphaned. So, you see I know to instantly follow orders. I was so rattled I waited another few minutes to let the light go through another cycle before my nerves calmed down so I could drive home. When God speaks, instantly obey!

At several times in my life I have had premonitions and even shouted warnings in my mind and each time I heeded them. I am still alive today because I did so. We have come a long way from that progenitor Hairless Ape, but those atavistic instincts remain, for good reasons.

My opinion is that a sasquatch talked to Michael and told him to "Play Dead." They are always watching. Always. There is no place you can go in the outdoors that they do not have an eye on it. Many sasquatches do help humans. He said that bear turned away, stopped, listened and then took off running. The only thing that could scare a bear that much is a sasquatch. Please, do listen to their voices in your head. And if you want to think of those voices as your guardian angel or the voice of God, then please do. They are always watching.

Someone was definitely watching out for Michael, who should have been carrying bear spray.

The guy was given 2 warnings and he did not heed. Besides running away was not a favorable options and he was mauled and miraculously his arteries were not damaged. He is alive, but next time he will heed the warnings. So, stay safe, warm/cool, and blessings.

I believe his guardian Angel warned him and his attack would not have been as severe and I bel believe his Angel protected him because he prayed to the Lord. I am so happy he was okay and made it as well as the bear. God is good all the time. He now has this knowledge and his testimony could really changed lives in the here and now as well as lead others the Christ for eternity ❤

Hi Atticus... He definitely had an Angel on his shoulder warning him of his impending doom. I wonder what the Grizzly sensed that caused it to retreat. It had to be danger to her cubs or maybe she heard her cub calling for help. Perfect example of a miracle at work and our heavenly father stepping in to help. It wasn't his time. Great story as usual

He was lucky to bag an elk but unfortunately had to leave it until the next day to clean and pack it up. I cannot fathom why he wouldn’t be prepared with a firearm and bear spray given the probability that overnight the carcass would have been claimed by a bear. He must have known this. But, apparently not…aaand the bear with cubs attacked him, left him terribly wounded but miraculously alive. BTW I wouldn’t have gone back for the elk at all never mind unarmed. Glad he lived to hunt again.
