I experienced this reality with police when I was a teenager. They lie in their reports. Lying in reports isn't something that happens occasionally - it is a constant occurrence. Its standard practice. I got mugged walking outside. A friend of mine gave me a knife, which I forgot on my person. I got in trouble the next day at the school because I was eating lunch outside instead of in the cafeteria. The school police officer came to reprimand me and smalltalked me kindly back to the office. At the office, I told him I had the knife in my pocket and I calmly handed the knife to him after he verbally acknowledged that I was handing him the knife. He was all smiles and sweet talk as everything I wore was searched. Then comes the police report and the hearing. During the hearing, the police officer pulls out the report and reads it. "Jack was off of school grounds and as I approached him he started to run away. I brought Jack back to the office where Jack proceeded to pull out a knife on me." Who do you think that board hearing believed, me, a delinquent, or that police officer?

Every state I've lived in the state police have a reputation as being overly militarized. In my interactions with them during traffic stops they have been far more aggressive and suspicious than local police. I've watched these guys commit dangerous traffic violations amongst the general public while not operating at code. During my time as a MP I attended a conference with several state troopers from multiple states, and the attitude I felt coming from all of them was, "its us vs them, and I wish they would try something because they're all doing something." This is why, in my opinion, most state police troopers should have just enlisted and done their time against a real enemy instead of actively seeking to make every citizen they encounter a target.

I was born in a huge city, but moved to a smaller town 30 minutes outside of this city. Growing up a former classmate of mine dealt with mental issues, he had a incident where he was tazed excessively causing his heart to stop, no weapons found, wasn’t ever covered. Also had another former classmate who’s sister was killed due to a cop running a red light, nothing happened

I went to school with Aaron Hernandez from the Patriots who killed that guy(s) and that guy Nick Brutcher who just killed two cops in my town and then was shot dead, so I went to high school with two killers. Actually three... There was another guy who murdered his wife and then himself, but I don't remember who he was cause he wasn't in my grade. Crazy world.

Funny how they bring up race so much in this, but they don't mention the fact that the people who are shot by police & don't make national headlines are white people. The Kentucky story reminds me of the case of Jack Yantis. One of Jack's bulls got out and was hit on the highway by his place near Council, ID. Jack went out with a rifle to put the animal down if need be but two sheriff's deputies were already on scene. Evidently they thought they could put the bull down with their pistols and the just made the bull and Jack mad. In the ensuing altercation Jack was shot dead. The deputies were never charged and I think ended up leaving Idaho to find new jobs. They also conveniently didn't have their body cams on. This was in 2015. The county settled the wrongful death suit his family brought for $2.6 million.

@Dom :of the xi-dzopa the cops had already been cleared. No charges were brought because get this "conflicting statements create sufficient doubt to prevent a jury from holding anyone criminally responsible". Essentially, Jack's wife and nephew saw the whole thing, they said the cops overreacted and killed Jack for nothing. Cops of course said he was threatening them pointing the rifle at them. Investigation was over in 2016, settlement came 2 years later.

The amount of kids I met in school that were from rural areas that described the insane corruption of cops and other officials that just made things up to arrest and harass them was insane. It was crazy because it was at similar rates the kids from the poorer urban areas saw. These two groups need to come together as they have more in common than they think.

My hometown is just a a couple miles away from San Antonio. Our town LOVES to hire SAPD and Bexar county sheriffs officer rejects and fired officers. My town hired both the SAPD cops that got fired recently. One for forcing a homeless man to eat a poop sandwich, and the female officer who decided it was fun and funny to punch a handcuffed pregnant woman multiple times and than continue to antagonize the lady. Plus SAPD wont do anything about the SAPD officer who has been caught in road rages and where he’s off duty and pulls his gun on people. He even told the cops who showed up the guy was lucky he didnt kill him. Even tho the off duty was the aggressor.

I heard about the SA cop getting hired and then fired when called out about it (the poop sandwich dud) I did *NOT* hear about the one punching a pregnant woman. Both of the towns are so close to SA that these officers didn’t even move, their commutes just got longer. The poo cop got fired recently after Floresville residents found out he was hired. And residents in the tiny town protested the mayors house. But i think the female cop here in elmendorf is still here. So our tax dolllars are paying for her nee longer commute as well bc they all take their vehicles home

This is so sad that this happens daily in this country! My husband’s cousin was arrested one night for being drunk (happy drunk not violent ) and we got a call the next day that he hdied in his cell during the night. He was 29 years old and healthy.he is from Guatemala.when we got to see him at the funeral home the next day he was black and blue all over his face ,head and chest. We never got justice.And just last week a boy died bc the cops put him in a freezer and he froze to death.that happened in the same county. I know this is not shootings but still they died by the hands of officers.

I got beat up in highschool for not letting go of my phone when I wasn’t even the one being detained then I got detained. What people forget is that police brutality affects every race, BUT it affects black people disproportionately. That DOESN’T mean that poor white people don’t matter or that black people matter more than white people. It’s just a matter of fact. Solving police brutality benefits all races, but it benefits black people more proportionally

I saw a report about on police department that had two cops that were trained mental health professionals. They dressed in plainclothes and they would be sent to all the mental health calls. It ended up improving interactions with the community, making their interactions safer etc. I think every department should have that.

My hometown police, Nicholasville Police Dept., is one of the most corrupt departments along with KSP. And dont get me started about Louisville Police. This just happened couple weeks ago to a guy that was friends to my son. We have known him since elementary school. So sad they went to serve a warrant and 3 cops couldnt get him handcuffed and one shot him not just once but 3 times and in the head. Said they didnt know if he had a weapon within reach. He didnt. He just had mental issues. Why shot to kill like that???? I have a hard time with reading stories like these.

Body cam footage is actually a benefit to the police. It allows the police to prove if a suspect resisted arrest, or that they were a clear and present danger to the police or others, and it can disprove complaints of misconduct. Of course it can also prove that prove that police misconduct took place. For this reason, I find any resistance of the police to make and keep body cam footage to be very suspicious.

The only problem i can see is long term this logic being placed on civilians, ie "why are you against facial recognition cctv on evey corner unless you have something to hide?" I am very pro body cams for cops, but we need to be cautious we don't overstep!

I'm in Austin, Tx & it's frightening how often body cam evidence just "disappears" - & I live in a "top 10 most populous" city. Even IF brought to trial (which rarely happens in red state Tx.), the popo are ALWAYS acquitted (even with body cam footage) of things like major assault w/out provocation, resistance, etc. & even murder. I may be a white woman, but I still don't trust the ex-military popo, b/c once military, ALWAYS military, as in, EVERYONE is the enemy & you must treat them accordingly, rather than, innocent until proven guilty. PLEASE BAN EX-MILITARY FROM BECOMING COPS!! And don't let them have surplus military gear (why do city police need assault tanks?!)

I remember reading vets home from Iraq were found to have less excessive use of force complaints and shootings. In part, the frontline troops in Iraq had more strict rules of engagement than our domestic police. ... That's right, police have more leeway to use lethal force than our soldiers had in a war zone.

I think you’re talking, as we say in the UK, bollocks. You’ll likely find that the majority of the cops with bad rap sheets, who are bullies, who pull guns too quickly, who judge too quickly, who use violence too readily, who write a ticket too quickly, have never served in the military. The standards set for young soldiers in the military are such that a lot of these negative traits will have been identified during recruitment (so they are turned away) or addressed during training. That is not to say that it applies to ALL ex servicemen and women who join the police, but the vast majority. They will likely be the more professional (well presented, timely, respectful, polite) beat officers in a police force. On the flip side, I think you’ll probably find that a lot of Police ‘bad apples’ likely failed to get into the military for the very reasons I mentioned above. In the military we don’t want the sorts of people who become bad cops because they don’t listen, they don’t do what they’re told to do, they fail to follow rules and regulations, they don’t think it applies to them, which sort of makes them purposeless as we head into war where following orders is sacrosanct. So I’d strongly suggest you review your POV about ex servicemen and women in the Police. As I said, not universally, but in the main they will be the better officers and the bad PoPo will be straight from school, failed military jocks/bullies with a god complex.

When I was a 17 y/o white girl I crossed the street to be with my dad who was talking to a cop as a witness to something that had happened on our street, and I guess it startled the police officer and he reached for his gun. As someone who works as an assistant in the public defender’s office in my county, these stories are SO important to put out there! At my county jail, it’s just under $70 a night per inmate. Most of our incarcerated clients have underlying issues and many are homeless, have food insecurities, have mental health issues, and/or have addiction issues. The number of BIPOC people I see in a week is staggering in comparison. Bail amounts and punishments for similar crimes are much harsher on BIPOC people. I’m also married to a cop, and over the past 21 years, I’ve seen so many cops get off with barely a smack on the wrist. One who I knew personally was charged with sexual assault to minors, he lost his certification and cannot work in law enforcement in any state, but he didn’t serve ANY jail time, got a seriously reduced charge. Also he didn’t have to register as a sex offender. I was LIVID with this ruling as I am a child sexual assault survivor. My husband was too as the officer in question was his sergeant. Another sergeant in his department was getting ready to quit his police job and go work full time with a recovery mission. The mission decided that they no longer wanted him in their employ and he didn’t accept that. He was on duty and he drove well out of his jurisdiction and caused such a huge scene that the local cops were called. He was fired, but he was never charged with menacing or aggravated menacing. He also had a previous record of violent crimes that he managed to get dismissed.

One of the big problems with gun culture in this country is just how many have them for no good reason because they are ITCHING to use them against someone, but would never verbalize that (or maybe they would, and they're even more dangerous) in contrast it reminds me of the mindset about martial arts or hell even CPR: to learn it well with the goal to never NEED to use it The trouble with guns here is that nobody is trained to have that discipline and respect or even full knowledge of what they are dealing with, and it's purely a free range for power trips that end up with a body count And it takes longer to train to be a cosmetologist than it does to be a cop in this country.

as a republican, the way that Kentucky State Police handle cases so secretive should be illegal. even people on the right can see how simple things, such as mandatory body cameras and transparency on cases, are necessities in this country. this is the exact opposite of what “freedom” is. however, i disagree with the overall theme of this video. if you’re endangering others or police officers, you are more than likely going to be shot. look out for those you love and get them the mental health care they need (facilities, therapy, rehab, etc) before it gets to that point. you can’t be mad at the police for shooting an active threat that isn’t being cooperative.

In my 60s, I was rear ended by a distracted driver. A N.Y. State Trooper showed up that obviously was armed, dangerous and a criminal. He misunderstood something that I said about my insurance because he was programmed to distrust. I could see he was ready to throw an old man (me) to the ground and who knows else what. It was only split seconds for him to understand that my insurance was good but was being changed to a new company in a few days. Then the hate and violence in his face subsided. I will never forget or forgive his dangerous and lethal face and body language. A few seconds made a difference but it was all luck.

Thank you vice for this. I knew too many people, both black and white who's lives were stolen by police. One was shot simply bc his dog was lose while he was speaking to the officers. They shot the dog then got scared when he flipped out bc his dog was dead, and shot him too. Always for nothing. I'm from NC,it's rampant in rural areas and is hidden away. Cops will hurt anyone. In my experience, there is a lot more who might not be killed but who’s rights are violated. When I was dragged out of my car on a rural street in VA coming from work, there was no reason for that and nobody around us. Not a single person. It wasn’t the first time they were rude or arrested me but first time they physically attacked me. I thought my life was over, growing up in NY projects, they are much more racist in the south. Fixing this piece meal isn’t going to work. Never. Has to be entire system. Just because we need cops for crime, don’t mean we need to live in a police state. In the end they are there to SERVE US, they aren’t above anybody! They aren’t even educated in their own jobs well enough to judge what a crime is!

The police are afraid for their lives due to the unknowns of any case they are called to. There are justified killings and unjustified killings by police across all races. Of course all of the unjustified shootings should be prosecuted. I hope someday the police will be seen in a way that doesn’t instill fear and situations can be handled calmly without the need for deadly force, but we are still a long way off from that. Because we see so many killings in the media, people are scared that any cop could be bad and that makes shootings more likely.

One of the failures of the BLM movement is that it makes the issue about black identity instead of the lack of oversight for police abuse of power in America. 31% of police unarmed victims are Black which is more than twice their population rate and therefore it is obviously deeply unjust, BUT 45% of unarmed police murder victims are whites - pretty much tilted to the rural poverty direction. All the other rates of murder combined look exactly like the rates of poverty by race in America. That's the police are directed at Black people, but rather POOR PEOPLE, and since America has caused poverty to be racially skewed (CRT elements insert here, justifiably), the police are killing poor people at these rates exactly. Poor rural whites have equal cause to be outraged, but BLM as a slogan has excluded them, and any chances of getting them to vote out the right-wing elements that cause this.
