I found it odd that they never even mentioned Opie‘s mother‘s name. Or never showed an old photo of her on display somewhere in the house.

I wonder what happened to Andy's parents that caused him to also be raised by Aunt Bea.

OK, while you're at it what happened to Elly May's mother and Jethro's father on "The Beverly Hillbillies"? How about the mother on "My Three Sons"? Or the girls' father on "Petticoat Junction"? A lot of cold case mysteries.

My question was why doesn't Opie have any grandparents? What happened to Andy's parents and Opie's mother's parents? Andy was only supposed to be in his early to mid 30's in the show so you wouldn't think they would all be deceased. It's my favorite show of all time but they did a poor job at the backstory and also with continuity within the show.

Remember Andy told Opie in the first episode that Aunt Bee raised him. So evidently he was either orphaned or just his(Andy's) mother had died when he was young too.

Thanks Bob for that interesting info. In that episode of Danny Meets Andy Griffith, Francis Bavier played a character by the name of Harriet Perkins, who was in trouble with the law for defaulting on her taxes due to money she owed for renting a suit for her late husband's funeral.

Like many series, things changed from the pilot. Frances Bavier played a different character. There was a different town drunk. Andy was no longer editor of the newspaper. But it doesn't sound like the fate of Opie's mom changed. Judging from the first episode, Rose had been with the family a long time. Nowadays her getting married wouldn't have necessarily meant her no longer being the housekeeper. She could have lived with her new husband and worked there during the week. One of the key elements of the show was Andy and Opie's relationship. That never changed.

Miss Jean Hagen was both the original "Mrs. Marjorie Williams" in the "Make Room For Daddy" Pilot for "TAGS" and "Miss Elizabeth Crowley" in the Episode "Andy and The Woman Speeder." The "MRFD" Writing Staff was so annoyed with this Actress that they actually sent Her Character to an early grave! Remember the two "Chuck Cunninghams" only vanished after Basketball Practice on two occasions. Two things about Jean Hagen. 1) IIRC She was the Wife of Earle Hagen who handled the "TAGS" Soundtrack. 2) She was best known as the hilariously off key singer in "Singin In The Rain."😂😉🎤💃🎼🎵🎶🎸🎷🎺🎹🥁⛈👮‍♂️👮‍♂️B.W.

My memory of 60s TV was that nobody ever died, and nobody ever divorced. All of the single parents on TV back then were widowed, and when a show lost someone, like My Three Sons lost William Frawley, they just explained that Bub had moved away, or something like that. In 1972, after Bonanza lost Dan Blocker, it was explained that Hoss had died, and I think that was the first time a regular cast member's death was acknowledged in a TV show.

I could be wrong, but as I recall Opie's mom's fate was mentioned in passing during the episode "Opie the Birdman" where Opie accidentally killed a momma bird with a slingshot. He took on the task of raising the three baby birds because like him, they had no maw. Am I remembering correct or not?

As I recall, Opie had grown quite close to his previous babysitter and that was discussed at some length in the episode introducing Aunt Bea. It was one of the reasons Opie didn't want to give her a chance.

The Taylor housekeeper's name was ROSE. In the very 1st Episode , she marrys a man and this couple is never seen or heard from again. However zeta Rose's new husband reappears in other episodes as another character, the town's butchershop owner.

I found it odd that TAGS did not address Opie's mom. Only of couple of references to her, no pictures of her, nor do any of her relatives ever vist Opie. I assume she must have been an attractive redhead and must have died from complications of childbirth. Guess we'll never know for certain. Perhaps TAGS didn’t address it because they rarely did flashback stories. Three Wishes for Opie being the rare exception. Enjoyed the episode, Bob.

Macho men ruled back then. The writers on this show always said they didn’t know how to write for women. As far as I know there were no women writers on the show. So no mom photos or sentimentality on that front, it was strange. There were a few continuity problems on this show too.

Many TV shows back in these days didnt develop extensive backgrounds for the shows characters unless it was necessary for the plot. Andy was written as a widower. Opi didnt have a mom. End of story. Nothing else here. Move along. They never suspected that 60 years later folks would even be aware of their shows.
