There are only so many ways to be innovative, I think that analog horror can still work using the tropes that's set up for them. Because if even analog horror parodies can be scary from time to time, the problem is more with how the tropes are handled as opposed to them just being overused. I'd like to see the analog format used for things other than horror as well.

I’ve been thinking on working on a semi 2D semi liveaction analog series on a fnaf character.. but it’s sorta where it’s like I wanna build up the actual horror throughout the story than it being completely horrific. Where it has these actual instruction and advert type videos.. I guess sort of like the walten files but with an add of more liveacfion? I’m still in the process of making the suit it I seriously am hoping that whatever I make is soemthing people would love
@aaronymous9

I feel like the most popular analog horror tends to be the most unique. Monument Mythos? The premise alone plus the windows movie maker episode. Walten Files? ( no matter how much I dislike it ) is unique in the sense that I believe it was one of the first analog horror with analog horror and the editing is a lot better than some others. Mandela Catalogue and the ones mentioned in the video are also some others. I just feel like throwing a wrench into a pile can be the best way to renew the genre.

Yeah I totally agree with this. Its super hard to be original nowadays, some would say damn near impossible due to the amount of creative people trying to make something. Think of a story in your head RIGHT NOW one that you made, it would probably sound extremely similar to another famous property because that’s just how things work. nothing is original at this point.
@skelebonez1349
@skelebonez1349 2 жыл бұрын
@@aben1466 I think while that is true, I do believe as long as we’re able to find ways to make it unique even if some stuff has been done before, we can stand out. Sure it isn’t easy to make something original, but to me, as long as you can make something good and have the commitment to it with a good vision, i believe it’ll make things cooler. It’s ok to take inspiration from reallt anything, history of film has done it since ir was invented. As long as someone got a creative mind with a very intriguing and interesting story, even if it does remind us of something else, it’ll be ok as long as it does things that stands it’s own ground Sorry for the long ramble but I hope you get what I mean-

Yes, everyone is way too obsessed with "but muh deep lore" even for things that SHOULD be mysterious. Horror isn't scary anymore when it's over-explained. I honestly find the backrooms scarier with no monsters in them at all. Thank GOD somebody else mentioned the whole "The less you know about something, the scarier it is" concept. I've lost so much fear and suspense of things like the Backrooms or FNAF or Local58 PURELY because too much of it was analyzed and deeply explained to the point where I was just more intrigued about the world itself or something. The Backrooms are now just a cool fictional world to explore. There's nothing fearful about it anymore. That's also why so many other things stopped being scary to me. People just tried to explain too much of it, and now I've lost any fear of the unknown that made those particular things so scary to me specifically in the first place.
@errortryagainlater4240

People mistake "mysterious element" with "plot hole" and rush to explain it as if they have to justify every part of a story's existence. Like, not everything _needs_ worldbuilding or lore, 90% of the audience probably didn't even ask. Can you imagine how weird it'd be if every person alive knew everything that'd ever happened in Earth's history? The characters in your story shouldn't know everything about THEIR world either.

On one hand I personally agree with you personally on the other there is a certain catharsis to it. In real life the scary things are completely out of your control and there is so much in this world you can't possibly ever understand. To be presented with something that at first seems scary but then to explore and explain it so deeply you arnt scared anymore. It can be comforting to some.

It's all about that uncanny valley feeling, y'know? you think something's right there in the corner and then it's gone, faces that look just human enough to the point it's creepy that it isn't human. I think people watch analog horror for the humans though. You can have scary jumpscares and unsettling imagery all you want, but if your human characters sound like they're from Resident Evil 1 then it doesn't matter what the monsters look like or do.

That was our version of all this uncanny analog stuff back in the 2010s. What’s old is simply just becoming new again. It’s sad, really. I think one really amazing "analog" horror series on youtube at the moment is probably The Monument Mythos from ALEXKANSAS. I say analog horror in quotes because there are some points where it doesn't really feels like analog horror, more so an alternate history horror. It almost completely avoids all of the analog horror tropes attached to the genre while maintaining a really well made and cohesive story with great acting, imagery, and some comedic points to lighten the mood. Absolutely amazing series that I recommend anyone and everyone to watch.

I know the backrooms seems really repetitive BUT one of my absolute favorite videos that twisted the concept of finding a monster there slightly is when the ‘monsters’ were replaced with living dinosaurs. Like on paper it sounds ridiculous but the concept implies the backrooms have existed for far longer than you could imagine and that anything could get stuck there and that’s a horrifying concept on its own not to mention when realistic t rex hunting behavior was implemented in said video on some poor cameraman. The video has a million views now but it still sticks in my mind as well as that clip of the anky effortlessly clubbing one of the backrooms monsters.

I think the fact that Gomo’s too scared to watch the Mandela Catalogue tapes doesn’t make her a wuss. It just means the whole horror aspect of the vids is working. Horror itself is designed to terrify you. To keep your light on when you go to sleep. Unfortunately, most horror in movies rarely uses its aspect to any effect, opting for cheap jumpscares instead. The same can be said for horror on the web, especially with Analog Horror and .exe games. The fact that TMC scares people like Gomo enough to keep them from actually watching is good. This means that TMC’s writing is so good that it actually elicits fear from its audience. And like I said, this doesn’t make Gomo a wuss. I get scared at shit too. Hell, I can barely watch a horror movie, no matter how bad it is.

Why was I never scared by the Mandela Catalogue? I'm seriously not bragging here. I've always wanted a web series to scare me that much, but oddly enough, Nothing seems to get to me, and I'm sick of it. The only series that's gotten to me, however, is GHE. Literally the first video made me shout at the screen, and I haven't done that since I was a little kid. Serious props to Remy Abode

13:28 I completely agree with it being meant to be abandoned, and monsters do ruin the original concept. Thats why it shouldve stayed in an idea form and not be put into video, because what are you going to do in a backrooms found footage tape? just walk around I guess? theres not much you can do when taking the original concept and putting it into video. What kane is doing with his series is probably the way to go, hes adding something to it that isnt just scary monster roar. And im p sure evan royalty did a cool backrooms take a couple years ago.

I don’t think the issue was the idea of monsters themselves, just how they’re presented, for example the wiki has pages upon pages of monsters with details surrounding them, while I think the best interpretations of the backrooms have monsters that are vague and rarely show up with little revealed about them.

I've once seen a really well made backrooms video (forgot the name and creator unfortunately) where it took the format of a journal. The protagonist accidentally clipped into the place and recorded his thoughts as he tried to find a way out and we could hear his sanity degrade with each entry. There was no monster but he swore he heard one, never realising that it was his own footsteps echoing. He was exhausted, delirious and mildly crazy by the end, when he managed to clip back into reality. In real r/im14andthisisdeep style the real monster was his own mind trying to make sense of that place all along.

My favorite part of the whole Mandela Catalogue are the few videos before vol. 333 that parody the old “scary ghost spotted in real life” kind of videos from early KZbin. Other than adding onto the idea that people in their world are paranoid, it doesn’t show much. But it does have the VIBES. It shows Alex’s understanding for analog media other than vhs tapes and the like. So little analog horror unfiction/ARGs utilize different media like that and that’s what I love the most from Mandela catalogue.

The issue is that nothing is fresh forever. Eventually everything will get washed out, stale, and old as time goes on. Music, horror, living beings, it's just a fact of life that things become dried up once enough time passes. That's why I've started to analyze media in the long term, even though there are a lot of valid criticisms towards analog horror. Good video as always, Gomo!

I feel like trends that were super old would resurface and become "new" when reintroduced long after their novelty ran out. For example movies in black and white intrigue me more then the regular coloured once but people from that era would enjoy colour more. You can argue that it's more of a historical thing which yeah I guess so but it still enforces the idea that people like seeing things that they don't see often it's like an endless cycle of ideas

To me, The Smile Tapes is the scariest analog horror series. After the whole COVID pandemic, looking at people infected with a disease that turns them into invincible smiling monsters that ravage the world is just creepy in it of itself, but also the audio and imagery do a great job at enhancing it. Imagine dying a painful death at the hands of an invincible zombie, with the last thing you see being a demonic smile. Rewatch it. It’s worth it.

Honestly for the backrooms videos, you’re right about that. Personally I think if people or even just someone made a series of exploring the different levels with different characters to follow. It would be more interesting than just a monster chase because we’d see strengths of the levels people wrote for the purpose of it being horror. Plus you could really make the monsters special, there’s plenty of strange creatures in the stories written on the website. Instead of being a scary face, show the disturbing fates of the unlucky survivors

Can I just say I was a little disappointed with the direction NeedleMouse in particular went? Like, it was relatively generic in the beginning, but it carried out the usual analog horror tropes with a sense of uniqueness and flair to it, as well as a sense that nothing was really as it seemed. Now it’s a… shonen fighting anime? The second season is just a lot less horror, and a lot more exposition and fighting, which really takes away from the tension that the first season built up. Not to mention that the last few episodes are, in GoMo’s words, glorified PowerPoint presentations. Not to disparage the effort put into the videos at all, the art is the main reason I got into it in the first place, I was just very disappointed. EDITS: Elaborated on my point, grammar

Heya gomotion! Just in the middle of this video, and I couldn't help but notice that my tape was in here? That caught me by surprise! But since I'm here, I might as well give my stance on my analog horror mindset. Back then, when FNAF VHS was this new concept that Junior 0437 and Squimpus brought to the table that "made FNAF scary again", I thought to myself; "...What if I tried out this VHS stuff?" And that led to the creation of my first VHS tape, "Freddy Endoskeleton Test". I will admit, this tape is pretty crap. Even though it was my first ever attempt at a old-fashioned VHS styled tape. A couple tapes later, and that leads to the well known "Voice Box Test". This tape alone has made me speechless of how widespread this stuff can reach out, even with the whole KZbin algorithm stuff. But, after releasing that, I realized that most of the tapes that were being uploaded were just starting to become carbon copies from each other, and if you ask me, I didn't want to be one of those "constantly copying another video just to get more views" people, I wanted to bring something new to the table, tell an interesting, terrifying story within these horror VHS tapes. I've studied the way of how the famous horror movies were portrayed, how the pacing was, writing, characters, etc. I want to accomplish all of this with my FNAF series. Hence why if you take a look at my latest tape, the Mangle one, you'll see a HUGE quality change between the Freddy tape, to that one. I've been attempting to improve my skills with story-telling, portraying these characters, all that stuff. I'm not perfect with this stuff, trust me, there are a lot of people out there that are more talented than me. I'm just one guy making these silly VHS tapes to entertain the audience. I'm not doing this just to get a quick buck or two, I'm doing this because this is what I enjoy, and I want to show the people what I have in store for them all.

As someone who dreams on making analog horror series, this video helped so much, and I agree with 90% of what you said. I'm so tired of the FNaF VHS and Backroom videos. What made FNaF VHS was how it was it's own take on FNaF. It didn't follow the games overly complex lore. It was it's own more simple retake on it. The VHS tape's glitching and having the ghost take over the tapes at times was so cool. Kanes take, while ruining the idea of no-one knows how to get there, is so good. Not only for the pure production, but how it is a more simple take on it. There's no real levels, and there's only 1 monster we've seen. Things like Walten Files and Mandela I love for their disturbing tales. Walten Files and how the Walten family was ruined by one man's actions. Or how in Mandela, one Alternate can kill a whole house of people. But now people are just CTRL+C and CTRL+V stuff now. Oh look, scary FNaF, omfg it's a creepy 40 year old to represent Afton. Look, text on screen from the kids. Or the Backrooms, look, it's someone running from one of the same 5 monsters. Or look, hazmat people getting killed, so scary. The series I'm making is about a group of friends. 1 of them goes missing, and the friend group get's them selves into some paranormal crap trying to find that friend. But I fear I'll just repeat Mandela or Local58. Or that I'll not use the fact it's lost footage from the characters camera. I love analog horror, but it's very true that people are over saturating it.

It annoys me to no end whenever anyone says "finally TRUE horror" or something of that sort because it implies the horror genre isn't comprised of dozens and dozens of subgenres and there's only one absolute way to do it right. Like people complain that more actiony adrenaline pumping horror is really bad at being psychological horror like that isn't calling an orange shit for being bad at being an apple. You see an endless number of people go "jumpscare bad" like they're the first one to ever have the thought, in my opinion if something can be done right (jumpscares CAN be used effectively, and are far more versatile then unga bunga jump in face and yell that everyone thinks they exclusively are) than people should be discussing how to properly utilize said techniques instead of trying to prevent anyone from ever using them just because they can be done poorly. It's that kind of sentiment that causes rapid oversaturation, because if people only care about horror when it scares them, than anything that doesn't scare them (or creep them out or unnerve them, atmospheric horror isn't exempt from this) is frowned upon. Because god forbid horror be used as anything other than a means to scare you. The new horror "genres" that come out feel old so quickly because most people don't actually treat them as genres they treat them as aesthetics, so they don't try anything different than the shit they did before, just present it to you in a slightly different way. TL;DR Treating horror like a binary "true horror/ bad, fake horror" seeks only to shun experimentation and turn the artform into something formulaic you can mathematically optimize. And of course shit is going to feel stale when everyone seems more concerned with presentation (both in regards to aesthetic and technique) than what's actually being said, what you're left with is essentially just a bunch of templates.

Amazing vid Jodie! I always thought the Mandela catalogue stood out among all the other analog horror series for the reason you described, the existential horror was more effective for me. And I tried to get into the backrooms like I did with SCP so many years ago, but as much as I fell in love with the original concept with the yellow walls and was drawn in by ‘the end is near’ empty library. I think that idea of levels that increase in difficulty with a near impossible escape is great! Adding hundreds of monsters into the mix ruined the dread of being left completely alone to wander until you die of starvation/dehydration.
