A drastic change from Yargos Lanthimos's usual style of
dispassionate commentary of societal transgressions, The Favourite is much more rhythmically paced and emotionally frank as it explores the intimacy of power dynamics in relationships.

Hey Alachia, I follow your channel for quite some time and even we don’t always agree, I find your reviews constructive and rational. Lanthimos is not the filmmaker most believe, he build his career on a lie and deception. Dogtooth, his first international success is direct copy of a Mexican film The Castle of Purity 1973. Lanthimos present the film as his own original idea, only later was forced to reveal the truth and he was heavily criticised by his fellow Greeks. Additional his style is based on shock elements and off bit characters, other then that there is noting more to it. He doesn’t have any true vision or even a cinematic view, thats why every film he made resembles another. The Favourite is an imitation of Barry Lyndon and The Killing of the Sacred Deer is a copy of the Greece tragedy of Iphigenia. And you can clearly see his limitations in Lobster, its practically the same film with his previous one Alps, but with better budget. I understand the audience is fed up with the same academic narrative in period film and its not wrong to want to watch something different. Maybe The Favourite is for you, but in my personal opinion Marie Antoinette by Coppola was a master piece by comparison and the first film started this idea.

I agree that there are some similarities with the Mexican film but definitely not a copy. The rest of your comment is an absolute nonsense. ..every film is inspired by various things... Is every film a copy then? Of course he did not leave the country for the reason you say, that is an absolute lie...are you a troll or something?

@@billakis2000 Copying key elements of the script and directing is not by any means inspired, its a violation of copyrights. Of course originality doesn’t exist, many filmmakers are influenced by others. Lanthimos present the film as his own original idea and only later was forced to reveal the truth. In an old interview he spoke off the pressure and negativity he received and how this affected his decision movie on. Also, there is a story floating around, which I can’t confirm, that the Mexican filmmaker send him a message “I hope we win”. As for my absolute nonsense Strato, its my opinion and there is no need to be offensive. I’m highly educated in cinema and film history to know the difference between inspired by and make it your own, from bluntly taking and using to serve your needs. I call it lack of vision, you can call whatever you like.

@@DARTHWISDOM Obviously you are entitled to have your opinion about a movie and a filmmaker, on the other hand spreading lies and making defamatory accusations is something else...fled the country because of the critics???Really???The killing of the sacred deer is obviously based on Greek mythology similarly to many many other films so what? Is Roma or Cold War non original because they are based on life experiences? In what sense is the Favourite an imitation of Barry Lyndon? If that was the case would it be nominated for so many awards? Is this due to lack of education within the bodies who vote then....haven't they seen what a copycat lanthimos is?I guess you are the only educated...

@DARTHWISDOM 5 жыл бұрын
@@billakis2000 It was 9 years ago and since I can’t find proof, I’ll correct it. But let me tell it was pretty intense with the media and film circles. My point is, that Lanthimos films resembles other films, stories and styles. The Favourite IS an imitation of Barry Lyndon, watch the film. To this day I haven’t seeing a film entirely his. Its a travesty to compare Cuarons work and obviously you have no clue of his filmography. I highly recommend Y Tu Mama Tambien and Children of Men. The Academy is a farce, nowadays is obsessed with diversity/politics they will practically nominate anything. If Castle of Purity was a hollywood film, Lanthimos would be obsolete. Unfortunately, it wasn’t distributed at that time and they never did a copyright check. Maybe one day criteria collection will present A.Ripsteins filmography and everything will clear out. I’m trying to have a proper conversation, don’t be a smartass and understand how serious this is. There’re filmmakers around the world, who are struggling with dignity and respect for the craft and here comes this guy who built a career on copying others. If you prefer to be deceived is your prerogative, but I prefer to keep my ethics intact.

Yeah I mean excellently thorough review but hard disagree from me. The English-as-foreign-language style dialogue and robotic delivery that defines Lanthimos’ style may not be there, but the surrealism comes from the anachronisms - the outrageous dance sequence, the bluntness of the dialogue, the progressive sexuality, even the unhinged chapter titles - all set this apart from standard Sunday night BBC1 fare. It doesn’t even start with those pompous establishment shots you’d expect of the estate, or the region of England. He’s much more concerned with trapping you in the frame like a Kubrick film. He’s really ripped up the rule book here in one of my least favourite genres and a measure of how radical the film is can be gauged by watching the standard portentous period Oscarbait _Mary Queen of Scots_ .

I thought the dialogue was pretty clever and deliver of it in the performances was superb. The story takes certain liberties with history but it is generally historically accurate. Some things are based on conjecture such as the queen's sexuality. The main characters are based historical characters.

Sarah Churchill had the last laugh on Queen Anne. There could be another movie on her "come back." After being booted out of England by Queen Anne, Sarah and her hubby went to Germany to build their relationship with the House of Hanover (they could see the writing on the wall}. Upon Anne's death the Hanover's took over the Monarchy. Thus, Sarah Churchill and her husband the Duke of Marlborough waltzed right back into court along side George the 1st and Queen Caroline. As she grew older, and richer, Sarah Churchill purchased large amounts of land (after the death of her husband). Interesting note; a portion of the massive Sarah Churchill estate included the present day Wimbledon Tennis Courts. So, if your watching Tennis matches from Wimbledon you now know the courts were once a,part of the estate of Lady Sarah Churchill.

You missed quite a lot of the director's intent. This is not played straight. It is straight satire. There is a man walking a duck. Intentionally ridiculous dancing, costumes and actions. The queen fake feinting to get out of giving a speech. Sorry, but you definitely missed quite a lot of what was there.

Love Olivia Colman. She's on the rise now, but I loved her since Broadchurch. Her breakdown scene in the Favourite desperately just grabbing crying baby off of a servant was heartbreaking. That being said, still not sure about how she'd do in The Crown. Queen Anne and Elizabeth II are very VERY different character. I love the ceiling shots in the movie and the lace! Oh my god, such beautiful embroidery. But I don't care much of the fish-eye photography (more like style over substance), and the over the top scenes like the duck race and the orange throwing with exaggerated facial expressions. And the disturbing music of incessantly repeating notes (the scrubbing the floor scene). But I like the use of classical pieces.

SPOILER. I think you mentioned this last year, which piqued my interest when I saw it at the local. I decided to do this over Vice (which I wanted to see, but limited based on my expanding family). I have a love-hate relationship with period piece dramas (my binary pre-set is either love it or hate it), but I did get a 'Barry Lindon' vibe at the beginning and I thought, 'cool, game on.' Not sure the wide-angle worked for me like it worked for you. The cinematography was good though and it did put you right in the centre of the action. However, I thought that was overdone at times. There was a few fails.. that dance scene.. you know the one... seriously? End of the day, it was a bit flat in terms of storyline. I ended up drifting off to be honest,. Rachael Weisz was a standout. For me, the ending was about Stone's realisation that for all her cunning... she would never have the control/influence Weisz had. Agree with your B. Although B+ for the liberal use of the 'C' word.

Was hoping he will make more animal films and it can be called as 'Meow Meow Meow' or 'Gecko on Planet Saturn', but since he's done animal cruelty then I hope he moves to other things such as 'Darkness in the Morning', 'Thirsty in the Rain', or something not flamboyant at all tallying with his style. *@alachiaqueen* I wonder if for some reason KZbin isn't sending your notifications out (or at least for this video) I look for your videos at least once very 36 hours and I never got a notification and only found this cuz I looked directly on your home page. And it says it's been out for 4 days, but the comments and views are very low compared to your usual---I think others also maybe waiting for the youtube notification didn't know this video is up. BTW I saw "Assault on Arkham" based on your recommendation and I RARELY like comic book animation films and I thought this one was pretty entertaining. So thanks for the recommendation on that one. I decided the little hispanic Spiderman was just TOO MUCH for me, so this was kinda my replacement for that. It's not just the SJW race thing (please believe me on that), but the 5,001 Spiderman Universe characters. I'm not gonna be "a mark" for the film companies. I'm tired of it.
@Alachia
@Alachia 5 жыл бұрын
It's because Fox originally blocked this video in all countries. I had to file a counter claim to KZbin with argument of fair use. They finally agreed to just keep it viewable but with a copyright claim on it. That's why you probably didn't get a notification on it. Fox in particular is very strict about copyright material. I have started using less clips in my reviews but I really felt it necessary in this one to help demonstrate the unique choices in cinematography as well as the captivating acting choices.

@@Alachia WOW, they are really putting the hammer down on that recently, I guess now because youtube is more "established" and going into "premium" service. You heard about the big controversy with youtube channel "Star Wars Theory" yeah?? There was a huge backlash on them clamping down on his fan film--when he had ALREADY cleared it with LucasFilm. He even paid to have his own score music. LucasFilm got Disney to back-off of him, but it was only because a large number of comicbook fanboys really had a fit and threatened boycott of merchandise and tickets. Don't be afraid to let your subscribers know if they get into intimidating you---you might be surprised the group that would support you. Frankly I skip a lot of FOX stuff on politics alone--if it's a borderline film, if I see FOX in credits I just think "OK, I can skip this one". I'm surprised more major actors don't do the same. It's not a "hard" boycott, but if I'm in that gray area on a film, all I need to see is "FOX" and I'm not purchasing tickets.
