Everyone seems to be cursing 2020. We have seen a coronavirus pandemic, mass unemployment, an impending recession or depression, Black Lives Matter riots, and the scourge of cancel culture continues at pace.
All these events have led to another epidemic - fear. We are told to fear the virus, fear economic collapse, and fear…each other. But have you ever wondered how fear works? To answer that question, we talked to Frank Furedi a sociologist, social commentator, and author of 26 books including How Fear Works.
Frank and CIS policy analyst Monica Wilkie discuss the shift from assuming people are resilient, to assuming they are vulnerable. What impact has how fear ridden culture had on individuals and society?

Finally, someone who goes well below the surface about the reality of how COVID might/will shape us as individual's and communities. Please have him on again soon. :)

Dr. Furedi is one of the few 'individualist sociologists' in existence, and thus, exemplifies the old-school style of interpretation of society and social problems. I wonder sometimes whether he's ever heard of the Austrian economists and their individualist interpretation of economics. Many thanks for this great interview.

I have thought myself that strength isn’t encouraged the way it once was. I tell my granddaughter to be strong to have a backbone. On a personal note my husband and son passed away within a short time of each other, both accidental . I did go to a grief counsellor but said I didn’t know why I was there I had to help myself. I’m nothing special but I do have faith . Never feel sorry for yourself.

Strength is now discouraged. Its treated as being in defiance of the 1%. Dependency and fear are treated as goodness. The ruling class want it that way.

The mechanism that Frank describes after the 5-minute mark - tagging something as hurtful becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy - is one major reason we should be very skeptical of trigger warnings at universities.

Universities encourage dependency and illness. Resilience is treated as rebellion.

Good insights. A lot of academics don't give enough credit though towards how deliberate and contrived these things are, by forces other than organic "cultural inducement ".

Kellemes meglepetés volt látni/hallgatni Füredi urat, ezúttal nemzetközi platformon. A tôle már hagyományosan megszokott tárgyilagos, józan, ôszinte véleményt/elemzést hallhattunk. Mi Magyarok, büszkék lehetünk Önre, minden jót kívánok!

The whole idea is to infantilise us all, make us reliant on the state. The state provides everything ,gives permission on everything, we become sheeple.

My parents feared polio back in the early 1950's, because they had 3 children and there were occasional polio outbreaks. Then, in 1954, our society started vaccinating kids. I got the Salk vaccine at my school. No more fear! Triumph of medical science.
