Throughout the LORD OF THE RINGS films, there is a consistent effort to convey character development and drama. That being said, it is apparent that the priority one for the first installment of the original trilogy, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, is the effort to define for itself the fellowship between characters. In this video, I examine what fellowship means in this trilogy.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a truly once-in-a-lifetime (yes, once. I'm looking at you, Hobbit trilogy) event. So many things had to go right, so many little things could have gone wrong, but everything came together so perfectly. Even Tolkien himself felt that the Lord of the Rings was unadatable, and not only did Peter Jackson adapt it, but he created one of the greatest works of cinema ever

I read the books directly before watching each movie for the first time and I was not disappointed. I've never ever had that happen when reading a book first, with anything else.... I mean in 9(12) my only criticism was a lack of Tom bombadil

Putting aside the difficulties in rewriting the script and the time constraints Jackson had when he took over the helm of the Hobbit films...The Hobbit as a novel has nowhere near the depth and gravitas of The Lord of the Rings. Jackson was working with a smaller supply of material, and lighter material at that. A child's novel was not going to match an adult's trilogy in emotional impact.

The story of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit mean more to me than anyone could know. Middle Earth is like a rope that ever connects me to my childhood and has always been there ever since I was born, the music, the characters, the journey, it all calls to me. I grew up knowing it, my parents introduced it to us before I could even speak, and it calls me to the mountains where I would listen to The Hobbit audio book camping while I was young, it feels like it is connected to my soul. It is a symbol of my home, my Dad, and the longing for group of companions just like that, as you said. It connects me to the feeling of looking at vast mountain ranges, untouched, that feel like they belong to you because it's where you grew up. When I watched the movies for the first time in highschool, it became one of my all time favorite movie trilogy's. Then after, I re-read The Hobbit and finally read all The Lord of the Rings in about a month. I hope one day, I can give my children the same experience I had with the stories, and that when they read it, hear it, or see it, they learn love, companionship, and commitment to something bigger than yourself, that no matter how small they are or who they are, they can make a change. I hope when they look out into the forest, and up at the mountains, that is what they think of, and that it'll remind them of me the same way I am reminded of my Dad. To that I just say, Thank You J.R.R Tolkien.

Every time I think of something wise Gandalf said, every time I hike the mossy, dirty, and green mountains of my home state, and more than anything, when I hear the song of the shire in my head, I feel that no matter where I am and no matter how dark the times may be that I am somehow home. In the book, Gimli said "Faithless is he who says farewell when the road darkens". After Boromir's death the fellowship could have easily been broken, yet each character/group continued on to the goal of destroying the one ring. That is loyalty to the beliefs and commitment the fellowship made to themselves and each other. They all continued to have faith in each other. As Arwen and Aragorn each said, "There is always hope". I was 18 when I watched the LotR trilogy for the first time. I was impressed but not invested at all. I had heard so many stories over the years of this epic, revolutionary piece of cinema and naturally, my mind created its own interpretation of what I had heard. So, of course, when I watched it, it wasn’t like my mind made it out to be. Fast forward two years (into the present), three watch-throughs later, having watched countless video essays and love letters to these films (and also having watched the Hobbit trilogy (oof… >_>)) and with each viewing, it got more and more amazing. These characters grew so much on me, although they are really just names and words in a script but brought to life by amazing performances! The music is beyond words. Just hearing the Shire theme is enough to make me tear up and send a chill down my spine. From intimate moments to epic, large-scale battles, the soundtrack is just so incredibly perfect and wonderful, I really can’t express it. This is a great video essay and you really captured a lot of what makes us love The Lord of the Rings so much. The ending though, so touching… Can't wait for your next part on this masterpiece!

Very similar to me. I was around 15 and watched the movies and understood they were great movies and enjoyed them but felt no investment in them. A year or 3 later it was as if something just clicked and I was watching the movies multiple times a year and learning everything I possibly could about them and the books and laughing and tearing up at scenes every time. I still watch them around once a year and return to Middle-earth in all its glory

I don't think it can be overstated how important the technical aspects of these movies are in supporting/enhancing the emotion conveyed in the story and characters. The music, the cinematography, the sound design and the editing in these movies is so good at communicating the emotional beats of what's going on. You almost don't even have to pay attention to what's being said in order to just "feel" the impact of what's happening. The filmmaking itself has such emotional weight to it. Howard Shore's amazing score combined with these amazingly beautiful and epic shots (beautiful and epic even when it's just a shot of an actor's face... even when what's going on in frame is disgusting like an Uruk-Hai being birthed, the shot still looks amazing) with perfectly timed editing and powerful sounds for everything... I don't think any movie combines these factors more perfectly than Fellowship of the Ring does. You can get lost in a world of feeling just purely from looking at and listening to these movies. As I have done... many times...

This whole Arwen storyline gives Aragorn an actual arc, which he misses in the books or which is really underdeveloped in the books. I don't like Arwen as a character, but she gives Aragorn so much more depth to his character.

These films are the literal definition of cinematic masterpiece. I fisrt watched them when i was 14/15 just before the Hobbit films came out. I fell in love with them immediately. I watched the extended versions (which are the only versions I will accept) at least once a month (lol back when i still had free time) and read every Tolkien book I could get my hands on. These films affected me in a way i can only describe as life-changing. They are my favourite films of all time and cannot be replicated (I'm looking at you Amazon).

My dad introudced me to the world of Tolkien at a very young age. He read The Hobbit to me and we watched the LOTR 2d animated movie. I read The Hobbit myself a few years later at the age of 11 ish and tried reading the LOTR books but I wasn't ready yet. A year after the first movie came out my mom finally allowed me to watch it on VHS with my dad and I fell in love with it. I bought all the LOTR games for the PS2 and some for PC and have both the extended and theatrical version on DVD and I still play many of the games and read the books from time to time but I watch the extended edt of the movies every year. LOTR are one of the very few products of art and entertainment that make me cry:')

I grew up with LOTR. First my sister read me the Hobbit and then we watched the 1976 animated version. My sister had the boardgame. I often fell asleep while the animated version was playing and it seeped into my very blood. When the movies came out it was an extremely emotional thing for me because it felt like coming home. I watch the movies and read the books all throughout the year because LOTR is.. Home.

Lord of the rings is my favorite fantasy and film trilogy of all time. I watched them as a kid around 2007 with my dad. They were game changing. The battle of helms deep and Minas tirith were mind blowing. Watching the extended versions in 2012 were yet again, mind blowing. Now in 2018 about 10 years later, I have read all of The books, played the games, and know all the lore. I have experienced this wonderful universe. As a kid I loved the action but now I appreciate the writing and story and THEMES. This story is the first and greatest fantasy and work of all time. Tolkien truly put important life lessons in his work and Jackson adapted it beautifully. Also the music is the best soundtrack ever.

Splendid video and such creative ideas. As a fan of the series, I can say that I agree with most of your points except the part where you said the fellowship lacked the historical relationship. Most of the characters actually had a very close relationship with each other. Legolas and Aragorn for example, Aragorn was raised by the elves in Rivendell and Legolas was an acquaintance of Aragorn. And we can see how Legolas defends Aragorn verbally in the Council of Elrond. Also the four of the hobbits had known each other for a long time. Although some of them had known each other, I believe what you were trying to say was that the fellowship had some antagonising characters (Boromir-Aragorn, Gimli-Legolas). And actually this is what makes the fellowship so emotionally effective. As the audience, we witness how their relationship become so intimate with time and how they even feel willing to risk their lives for each other (Boromir's death for example). Finally, I would like to say that Gimli-Legolas friendship was so emotional for me. Especially this dialogue between Legolas and Gimli brought tears to my eyes: "Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf - What about side by side with a friend?"

Thank you for your comment and kindness! ... Yes, there are *certain* histories, but the Fellowship *as a whole* is a collection of strangers. I’m making that point collectively, not individually. In the film, we don’t see much evidence for Aragorn’s and Legolas’ prior relationship; this is briefly alluded to but not expounded upon. Therefore, it remains true that, at least to audience, the fellowship is a group of strangers (as I said in the video, also, the Hobbits and Gandalf don’t really fit the mold of being strangers to one another. I love your analysis of these films! I was thinking of the scene in Return of the King where Frodo wakes up and sees everyone in his room - and the audience is made to remember that Frodo, unlike us, hasn't known of any of their outcomes the entire time. It seems like the final reinforcement of fellowship you were talking about - after all that time, they were all still fighting for him (even Gandalf, who he thought was dead). Its such a beautiful scene. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Sam and Frodo's friendship. It seems as if the series begins with them and ends with them. We watch as they endure so much together, making their final goodbye so heartbreaking!

I am lucky enough to say that i saw ALL 3 films at the cinemas when they came out. It was basically a family tradition at x mas. I was about 7 when the i saw the 1st one and even back then at that age i knew the movie was amazing and that the journey had only just begun. It should be noted that Aragorn and Legolas also have a relationship, as they have known each other for many years in the books, but it's not talked about at all in the movies. They have traveled together and I think they even hunted Golum together on orders from Gandalf.

And Aragorn and Gandalf have a relationship. And all 4 Hobbits have relationships with each other (Merry, Pippin, and Frodo are literally related to each other). And all 4 Hobbits have relationships with Gandalf, though Frodo has the best relationship with him. And given Faramir's knowledge of and experience with Gandalf, Boromir is probably familiar with him, as I'm sure each member of the Fellowship actually is.

Great essay. I'm sitting here going "Wow, yeah, he's right, that's exactly how it feels..." I kind of took it for granted at first, but the fact that this fellowship is so strong that it connects story threads that don't meet again for SO long... is kind of incredible. I remember reading the books for the first time and being super excited for the characters to meet again, I was looking forward to it so much that it filled me with excitement and joy for basically two entire books. And when they succeed in the end and everything is over, even though the evil is defeated, it it so gut wrenching to witness the end of the fellowship. All of them going their separate ways, some most likely to never meet again. Man, if I think about it too hard, I'm gonna cry again, and I already did that for a looong time after finishing the books... :'D

It's such a pure and heavy story. I don't remember a time that I didn't know what Lord of the Rings was, but I always wanted to hear or see it told again and again. As I grew up, I knew why. It's exactly what Sam's speech says.."those are the stories that stuck with you, even if you were too small to understand why". It shows what honor truly is, it shows us that even the heros had short comings, but they all chose to overcome them in the end. They all became servants to eachother & carried brotherly-love for one another..something we should all have and do. It will always be deeper and more important to so many people than most understand or believe.

I just wanted to say... thank you. I was in need for smart and deep analysis of movies. This channel is amazing! And about this particular video...well I'm just going to admit that you made my share a tear or two. I love LOTR for years, i watched movies countless times. The LOTR has been my favorite movie experience for many many years. I watch the entire series (directors extended cut) twice a year. I've seen all the special features and watched the films with commentary by both directors and actors. I LOVE LOTR! You have perfectly captures what was only a "thought and a shadow" in my own mind. Your assessment is nothing short of brilliant, and I can truly relate to your feelings as well. The emotional heft of this movie and the Trilogy as a whole is palpable, and has no peer in cinematic history for bringing out the full gamut of emotions in me. Joy, laughter, dread, sadness, and ultimately exultation (among many other feeligs!) are present and on full display when I watch these three films! No other movie has managed to move me so completely and thoroughly as this Trilogy. I also have the added bonus of sharing these feelings about the film with my Daughter who loves and appreciates them as much I as do, so sharing that Love of the Trilogy enhances the bond that she and I already share. I look forward to (hopefully!) more of your assessments covering The Two Towers and The Return of the King as well. Great job!

Im so grateful of how i was raised. Raised in the enviroment of fantasy stories like LOTR, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Narnia, etc. From age 6 i believe. I am a huge nerd on fantasy stories, and love to write my own stories. Good music, and amazing stories gives you a wonderful childhood. Furthermore, i came to love history too, and have since watched amazing historical movies. I am very grateful, that i wasn’t raised as my friends, who barely knows what a movie is, and thinks that every fantasy movie is shit, without ever having seen it.

It just struck me that at the end of Fellowship Frodo pulls Sam up from the water and saves him, through his love and commitment for him, and in Return of the King at the end of all things Sam pulls Frodo up as he hangs above Mount Doom. Through water, through fire. Beautiful parallels.

When I was younger I just thought Lord of the Rings was cool, but a couple months ago I marathoned them over a weekend and I actually got choked up at the end, for the first time after like 12 watches. I was amazed at how deep it actually is if you really invest in it

I got introduced to this series as a child with the Lego LOTR, then I watched the trilogy, and after that I started getting more and more involved to the LOTR. Then I became a great fan. Time has passed but I'm still, and i will always be a fan of this series (including the Hobbit).

As a 12 year old watching these movies I was blown away by the scale of the spectacle, the enormous battles and giant armies of evil, epic speaches and the heroism on display, all grounded in the attention to detail during the production, making middle earth feel like a place that actually existed. I always liked the third movie the most. Now I can appreciate the quite moments as well and understand how they are an integral part to the beauty of these movies and this story in general. Howard Shore's score is perfect too, without him these movies wouldn't be what they are. 15 years later these movies are still my favorite pieces of cinema but for different reasons. Today The Fellowship of the Ring is my favorite movie between the three. We're so lucky to have these movies, it's a true miracle that they were made the way they are.

This was really a great video! The first tattoo I ever got was the Lorien leaf brooch as it represented a physical thing the fellowship shared and how it kept them hidden and safe and led to Merry and Pippin’s rescue. But it definitely represents their fellowship as well. Now I really know why I bawl at the Frodo and Sam scene. Thanks for this!!

OMG! Such a good video! I just realized something, the genius behind Tolkiens story: By gathering a group of strangers to commit to a cause bigger than them, but at the same time have the item they all are committing to be the one thing that is constantly trying to tear them apart you have a constant narrative and emotional conflict in the story at any time, no matter what happens. It's the "I am not going to give up"-feeling both the book and the movies gives the audience that makes you emotionally invested in the movie. Your video is so on point, and somehow I never realized it is that one simple thing that makes the lord of the ring so good. Like two parents getting an unwanted child, but they decide to fully commit to raising it despite not loving each other, nor the child, but still takes all their energy and effort to commit towards this cause. That's what's noble, loveable and heartfelt. That is also what's wrong with so many blockbusters today, they're missing the one simple commitment and promise the main characters should make in the start of the story. Not a single Lord of the rings character has an important plot or emotional relevant dramatic backstory, they just all happen to be in this situation and now have to fully commit to the cause, or they'll die. And we get to know these characters through their actions, and actions of loyalty. Not through their tragic origins, but through their relationship with each other. You don't really need to explain anything, all u need is characters who commit to the cause.

Based on one of the most read and loved books of all time. Which touches on a vast amount of important ageless topics relevant to individuals and humanity at large. And a generally well done adaptation of the books by the movie. Combined with one of the most fantastic and moving musical scores of all time by Howard Shore. And there you have it, you have a winning formula. Rare to have a character driven plot, with an emphasis on character development and relationships these days to be honest.

As someone who's been reading Tolkien avidly since 1974, I find it quite fascinating how invested in the story people are who first saw the films without prior reading of the books. If you haven't read all the Tales from Arda yet, you've an entire universe into which to fall!

Wonderfully done. I've never thought of the "remember this" trope. I enjoyed the three parts and how commitment must remains throughout, even when the members aren't physically together. As a writer, I'm trying to see how to use this in my own story telling. Also, Ow! That was a nasty break.
