I've had the FR12 for a little more than 2 weeks. I've done 2 band rehearsals (5 piece band) and 6 gigs. It looks like an amp so I treat it as one facing it to the audience. It actually sounds like an amp because there's a certain amount of thump I always look for in an amp and this has it. I own a Headrush FRFR112 and a Line 6 Powercab 112 and this thing blows them both away. Just the fact of having active tone controls on the top means no more having to dive into menus to tweak my onstage sound which will change my sound coming from the FOH. I'm in 2 duos, 2 trios and a full band and my helix has never sounded so good. My backup rig is a Strymon Iridium with a TC Electronics Nova System processor. It's a back up because the Strymon doesn't have the guts like a Helix. It does now. Both rigs sound great.
@TomButwin10 ай бұрын
This is exactly the kind of thing I had in mind. Super happy to hear that my assumptions are right on with these! Rigs sound like they are awesome, even that back up with the Strymon.

@brianlebrun23828 ай бұрын
@@garysalgado9709 I got the 12". Just my opinion, but if you plan on doing what I do, which is using it as a traditional amp then I think the 12 is the way to go.

My pet page is the control pannel. I stand in front of my amps when I play. If you use the tilt back legs, you can't see the controls on the amp. If you stand behind your amp like the players of the tweed era, now the writing is upside down. How about fender makes these amps ergonomically friendly and do the layout like the BF, and SF pannels.

I'm loving this unit! Had it for a week and I can't stop testing new patches thru the tmp and the fr12 combo made in heaven 🙌
@TomButwin9 ай бұрын
Are you having any issues with hiss? I keep seeing comments about that.
@msi19859 ай бұрын
@TomButwin yeah there is a hiss that is caused by the EQ stack. It is most prominently hissing from the 1-inch driver. It hasn't bothered me at all, even at the bedroom level, and it doesn't seem to get louder when the amps cranked. I run the high cut switch between 10 and 11 o'clock and barely hear it.
@TomButwin9 ай бұрын
Can you bypass the onboard EQ to get rid of it or is it always engaged?
@msi19859 ай бұрын
@TomButwin always engaged unless you open the back panel and disconnect the Eq for the entire tone stack. 🙄 at least direct recording from the tone master along with XLR out from the Fender fr12 doesn't have the hiss. So sending signals to front of house is noiseless

Bought one with my TMP. Works great. The TMP is a game changer for me. Ive been using computers 8 hours a day since the 90’s and when I’m playing music with a plank of wood and some strings, I don’t want to play “computer”. I want my amp interface and instrument interface to be on the same wave length, and this combo does that for me.

I’ve been eyeing up one of these since I got my Tonex pedal, and I think you just may have convinced me to get one. I’m at the point where I no longer desire to hump my heavy Bassman amp around (hence the Tonex purchase) and I’d much rather take one of these at half the weight. I would go direct, but the other guitarist in the band that I usually sit in with has no intention of ever going direct, so that wouldn’t really work. As you said, this is a great solution. Thanks 👍🏻

I would like a Vox ‘Tonemaster’ or a Tweed ‘Tonemaster’ As my current lineup is an AC30 and a Bassman…I’m getting old and so is my back. Please test the Universal Audio Ruby, Woodrow pedals with the FR12 cab. I would be really interested if it would give you that Tonemaster amp quality but with a tweed or Vox tone.

When I got the FR-12 I thought about returning it because of that low hiss many people is reporting, but after a few days of use I've found out I don't even notice it anymore. There is a way to eliminate the hiss by upgrading a few chips on the preamp board. It's like a $50 solution if you know how to do that stuff, but most people won't have that skill.
@eddietherogue9 ай бұрын
There is some very smart people out there who knows this stuff. The amps sounds great otherwise but I have not compared it with the alternatives.
@DestinMcWhorter9 ай бұрын
So I'm supposed to spend $550 for something that requires physical modifications and another $50 spent on it in order to eliminate a hiss that everyone across the internet is complaining about? Why do folks let Fender get away with this? I will wait until they fix it AND come down in price, as for now I find it insulting to charge this much and QC allow that out the door. I suggest folks seriously considering this unit do more research as there are armies of unpleased customers that have returned it as a result.
@kmichaelp45089 ай бұрын
I’m in agreement with the previous comment. Why doesn’t Fender get their act together and fix this? This isn’t good on them.
@eddietherogue9 ай бұрын
I've thought of returning the amp and wait for a Fender fix but I'd have to buy an alternative to use with my Stomp and I don't feel like trying out alternatives. As I've said, I barely notice the hiss anymore. I've shown the amp around and nobody else notices it either unless I point it out, even if its certainly there. I understand everyone who wants to hold Fender to a higher standard, as we should, but this might not be a bad alternative for the price, hiss and all.

@ThatWhatIsNot9 ай бұрын
Yes, at least that’s what I’ve read on several forums. Strangely, reports vary such that some folks claim their cab has no issues, some say it has a mild hiss, while still others say the hiss is bad. Whether this is all just in the eye of the beholder rather than actual differences across units, who knows.

@@ThatWhatIsNotI’ve had the FR-12 for 3 weeks. Yes there is hiss but not noticeable when playing. Only if I am close to it and in a silent room. Doesn’t bother me. FYI the hiss is present even with volume off. But does NOT get louder with increase of the volume knob.

Sorry for the “duh” question, but if you go direct to PA from the output on the back of the amp, will the guitar still be heard through the amp speaker?

Not a duh question at all. As far as I know, it’s a pass through so you can adjust stage volume (even down to zero) independently of the DI out.

what about as an acoustic amp - for a acoustic preamp modeler?
@TomButwinАй бұрын
I think it could work for that, but it wouldn’t be the best candidate. You want a full range speaker with (maybe) a tweeter also for an acoustic guitar. I’d suggest a Fishman acoustic amp or QSC powered speaker.

@TomButwin2 ай бұрын
I haven't played one, but based on similar cabs that I've played, I'd say yes...as long as the other band members aren't going crazy with volume and it's indoors. The other thing I'd say about that is, if you're using this in conjunction with a floor modeler (As it's intended), you can always go direct into the PA, in addition to using the cab for stage volume.
@thomasmoore38223 ай бұрын
I am looking for something exactly what you said so i can use my pod go live. I can’t hear it with the in ears very well. Would a aviator cub work as well and give me an amp? You said some use a katana for onstage vol. So i am thinking a aviator cub with the effect loop would work. Any thoughts? Im intrigued with the quilter. So which one a fr12 or cub. I do prefer to use an amp live and been using an ac10. So im really serious about the cub.
@TomButwin3 ай бұрын
So, here are my thoughts: If you're using the Pod Go for amp modeling, I think the Katana, Line 6 Catalyst, or FR12 is the way to go. They have dedicated power amp ins to just reproduce your modeled/direct signal. If you're interested in using the Pod Go for just effects and not amp modeling, then I think the Aviator Cub is the way to go because the built in amp models are amazing, you get stage volume, and then can send the direct line to a DI for the PA.

There's not, but I'd think of it more like a PA system. You don't want "color" or really anything of note. It's meant to reproduce the speaker emulation/cab emulation, obviously. There's a 1" compression driver and the 10" or 12" speaker, so it's definitely not a typical Fender combo amp cab.
