Thank you for sharing your observations about this great little vehicle! For the Netherlands, it's main disadvantage has nothing to do with the vehicle as such, but in the sad fact that the Royal Netherlands Army had to abandon most of its Leopard 2 tanks in order to concentrate on armored reconnaissance with the Fenneks.
@Grimshak813 жыл бұрын
Don’t worry, even when Germany had leopard 2s used for recon, there was always another armored tank for the non-forced „real“ reconnaissance (the Luchs). Fennek is replacing the Luchs, not a Leopard. That’s a different type of recon.
@robendert76173 жыл бұрын
@@Grimshak81 For the Netherlands army, the situation is more dramatic than that. First, the divisional structure was abolished, and the remaining brigades reduced in number. Then the remaining Leopard 2 battalions where abolished completely, with the last ones sold to Canada after factory overhaul. Only one Leopard 2 company was re-established and integrated in a German armored battalion attached to the last armored infantry brigade lacking a tank battalion otherwise. So it is not just replacing a few Leopard 2's in reconnaissance units, but replacing all tank units with Fennek-based reconnaissance units. Also, armored artillery was reduced on brigade-level from a battalion to a battery. The current brigades do not even are on NATO-standard any more, more akin to WW2 regimental structures.

The Dutch army employs these also as stinger platforms and tankhunters. For the former the Fennek has an integrated 4-hardpoint launcher, while for the latter it simply carries a couple of man-portable missile launchers in the back. Bit disappointing that the spikes cannot be launched from the vehicle, but need to be deployed in a static position.
@scratchy9963 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity, why can't the Spikes be launched from the vehicle ? You'd think it would work like the Wiesel TOW system. BTW, they are upgrading the Wiesel to use MELLS ( German Spike Version), so it might be possible to do the same with the Fennek.
@quantum3403 жыл бұрын
@@scratchy996 It is probably not a matter of 'cannot', but of 'will not'. The Dutch army has Fenneks with snazzy integrated stinger missile launchers on top, so no doubt the Spikes (called Gills in the Dutch Army) could be integrated into a convenient launcher. But they have chosen not to. Probably because that is cheaper; and most likely someone decided that having a crew member pop out of the vehicle to set up a man-portable launcher is sufficient when ambushing tanks.
@scratchy9963 жыл бұрын
@@quantum340 That's why I'm wondering, because I know about the Stingers and the .50cal machine guns, the Dutch really went to town with arming the Fennek.
@quantum3403 жыл бұрын
@@scratchy996 Well, to be honest the .50 is formidable, but could also be found on unarmored open-topped Mercedes-Benz terrain vehicles (i.e. jeeps), so the Fennek having a single .50 hardly is impressive for an armored car. For comparison, the Germans equipped them with 40mm automatic grenade launchers. So to say the Dutch went to town arming the thing is a bit of an overstatement. But regarding the lack of Spike launchers, I have no doubt it was a cost issue. The Dutch Army has been living on a very tight budget for decades now. The introduction of the Fennek happened together with the abolishment of the tank units (all those Leopard2A5/6s sold off, still breaks my heart...). In fact, the whole Dutch armed forces doesn't even have enough Spikes to stop a single tank brigade.

Standard NATO Battlegroups utilises foot reconnaissance and vehicle recon. The foot recon is conducted normally the day/night before the advance and identifies minefields and enemy positions at vital points, while the mechanized will conduct its recon just before the conventional forces advance, usually just a few hours before. The biggest difference being that the mechanized recon will actually try to engage the enemy in order to gauge their capacity (in some cases the mission would be to eliminate the threat completely). Mechanized recon also gives a battlegroup a rapid flanking ability. Recon Vehicles with adequate armament (like the French AMX 10RC or the Bradley) can be used in a tank hunting role

There is *no* excuse for an armored vehicle designed specifically for recce to not have a sensor mast, unless you literally have no room because of a volume constraint. The advantage of having your primary reconnaissance sensor unit be able to deploy from a generously "turret down" position cannot be overstated. @@casuallatecomer7597 True. They're using them as convoy escorts and patrol vehicles a lot - the light armour isn't that much of an issue, and the speed helps a lot. Germany ended up using the Luchs like this as well, which had a 20mm autocannon - but that's not so much because it was supposed to fight its way out of trouble, but rather because that was what passed for a heavy machine gun in the Bundeswehr, the few M2 that originally were purchased in the 1950s weren't kept in service. But AFAIK the USA ae the only ones putting ATGMs on a dedicated recon vehicle, because to them recon and cavalry are the same, and cavalry has a direct fighting role as well.

There's a Dutch Anti-Tank and Air-Defense, even a mortar carrier Version. However only the Stinger platform fires directly of the vehicle has a low profile launcher. AT and mortar crew disembarks with the weapon.

I have a serious neurological issue making it near impossible to form new memories (yet still keep up with or follow Astro Physics and such). I have to go back and check out what somebody has ‘liked’. It’s a tad annoying not knowing what I wrote yesterday or whenever. I also find myself using uk and us phrases from areas I’ve never been beforemaking me doubt it was ever me who wrote certain comments. It was me this time.

Good video. Little information what other armys use in the same role and how it might differ relating to doctrine would be interesting. Also: What kind of units employ them ? Combat history would also be intriguing.

Canada should replace the G wagon for Reserves Armour Recce Units. These would be cheap and easy for them to maintain and would give the Army a new capability. They are not as mine proof as the current Recce vehicles but would be make an excellent training vehicle.

It's a case of convergent evolution, as both Germany and the Soviets/Russians have the doctrine of passive reconnaissance

@@bjoernschneider7762 I assume that you've heard about Reunification of Germany? And how GDR brought in a lot of soviet equipment, personnel trained to use and maintain it, tooling for production of some new vehicles and spare parts and officers experienced in doctrinal use of said vehicles, right? And that included BRDM-2. Fennek was designed almost decade after. Then how the f//ck do you try to pull "convergent evolution" bs here?
@bjoernschneider77623 жыл бұрын
@@TheArklyte Thank you for your very friendly comment. The BRDM is only in that way an ancestor as ist was the threat that loomed over light Western European light reconaissance forces. In the 80s. So they developed, well in the 80s some prototypes (Zobel in Germany, what would become the VBL in France) in a trinational enterprise. The Fennek than is a compromise between Dutch and German needs and requirements. They surely didn't need to take a NVA BRDM apart to know how to build a low profile car ...

@@bjoernschneider7762 I didn't say that they copied the units. But copying the ideas is not convergent evolution. It won't work in court, sorry.

Paraguay: Just today we had yet another incident with the guerrilla groups operating in the North of the country. The terrain there is muddy and full of woodland, and currently our joint spec ops are using civilian repurposed Toyota Hilux as their recon vehicles I really wish they can have something like the Fennec so they'll be much safer when patrolling.
