The Ferdinand was insane for a tank with so many problems. With a K/D of 10 to 1, this unleashed hell onto the battlefield, until the suspension literally shat itself. Very cool tanks
@humanhuman50242 ай бұрын
Honestly a KD of only 10/1 is really really low for something like this. Reports of this tank were actually horrendous. The Russians reportedly were laughing as they watched a battalion of these trying to get up a hill catching on fire due to the stress on the engine. Wasn’t as good during the testing on the normal Tiger P since it also caught on fire during testing.

If they were so bad, the Germans wouldn't reach the point where they almost conquered the whole planet.
@humanhuman50242 ай бұрын
@@TyTy-gm8yb 1. They didn’t almost capture the whole planet they didn’t even get 50% of the way there at their peak. The Italians failed to really do anything in Africa and the Japanese only really captured islands and about 1/4th of China. They also conquered Korea. That means they still had half of Russia, all of the Americans (the content) almost all of Africa, Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, India, and probably a bunch more others im missing. Not to mention almost all of the captured that the axis forces did in ww2 were against much weaker and smaller militaries. The entirety of lower Europe didn’t really even have a military so they surrendered and in Africa the only 2 countries they could really take were Tunisia which is normal and Libya which was so under developed they were using sticks to defend themselves against tanks. Only real impressive occupations that accorded was the small Japanese army that was able to fight China and Korea. The German occupation of France (even though they too were also still using mainly ww1 weapons to fight) and most of Russia as that was the bloodiest sector of the war. 2. You cannot attribute the success of a countries military to 1 thing. While yes the tigers themselves were quite good (Tiger 1 and 2) the porches variant of the tigers were horrendous. In fact during testing both Henschel (maker of the Tiger 1 and 2 we know today) and Porsche were supposed to make 1 version of the Tiger. Yet Porsche was so overconfident he made 80 thinking his would pass the test. During testing Porsches Tiger actually broke down and caught on fire. Which is why Hitler went ahead to make Herschel’s variant. However since Porsche had these 80 hulls of his tank laying around they decided to make them into something. With 1 being made into a commander Tiger which had a 200mm front plate with the same turret as the Tiger 1. And the rest being converted into Ferdinand’s and later on elephants. In actuality the Ferdinand was not a good tank and often broke down and caught on fire even in slight uphill gradients. They were also known to not be able to climb around 30 degrees of elevation.

They also broke down a bunch because the engine wasn’t meant to handle that much weight. They eventually made some modifications to improve it (which ironically added more weight) but that is entirely too much trouble for 100 tanks. It’s kinda a microcosm of the efficiencies that plagued the German war industry.

same could be said about all German tanks. Only the Commander had much visibility. the Gunner only had the sight, which were really good, but bad for situational awareness. the driver could see only forward. and the loaders generally could see the inside of the tank. So really you had just the commander scanning for enemies.

Personally I don’t see the Ferdinand’s/Elephants as a waste of resources. Germany needed tank destroyers and had a bunch of extra tank hulls that were no longer in production lying around. It’s not like the Jagdpanther or Jagdtiger where building the tank destroyer interrupted production of the actual tank.
@Izyaslavdabes3 ай бұрын
I honestly think the Ferdinand was a waste of time money and resources. Instead of using those tiger p hulls to create a pretty impractical design. They could of used Instead melted all those hulls down and made a couple hundred stug 3 tank destroyers or jagdpanzer 4's. These tank destroyers were far more reliable, easier and cheaper to make, easier to repair and maintain, and arguably more effective than the Ferdinand.
@crazycarnut13133 ай бұрын
@@Izyaslavdabes the Ferdinand was actually much more effective than any other tank destroyers the Germans had with it being the vehicle with the highest K/D ratio of any German vehicle. And you also have to remember that melting down all of those hulls takes a lot more time than mounting stuff onto them and time is something Germany didn’t have an abundance of.
@kumarikajalkiran50253 ай бұрын
@@Izyaslavdabesand those cheap tanks will be made in huge numbers 4 would cost 2x more fuel than a ferdinand and getting 5x less kills because even a standard t-34 85 could pen them and destroy them

Even if ferdinand would break it would get 10+kills and a standard soviet tank would break alot more than a ferdinand
@Izyaslavdabes3 ай бұрын
@@crazycarnut1313 That's debatable. Especially if you consider that those other tank destroyers were far more reliable than the Ferdinand. The Ferdinand while have a good K/D ratio, it was extremely unreliable especially the engine wich would catch on fire due to a number of problems. On top of that less than a hundred Ferdinands were produced and nearly all of them were destroyed or knocked out. 75% of Ferdinands were lost to mechanical reliability issues.
