I owned an F355GTS for 18 years. The car was 25 years old when I sold it. I have had many cars and the 355 has probably been the most reliable with relatively low maintenance costs across the whole time, it has averaged about €500/year over the whole ownership. I drove that car all over Europe, did around 50’000km and it never failed to start nor did it break down even once. Only two problema, the interior soft touch paint went sticky about a decade into ownership and just before I sold it, the heater wouldn’t get hot (apparently diagnosed as a failed auxiliary pump up front). Anyway, the car was a pleasure to own and I truly regret selling it.

On maintenance costs, it is interesting. I added up all my bills over 15 years recently. I bought a good one in the first place, but I've spent £32k over 15 years looking after it, including a few belt changes, new clutch, alternator, shocks, tyres and have the sticky bits sorted in that time. It's increased in value more in the time than I've spent on it. I've done 29k miles. They are very special if you can find a good one.

I was born in '95 and my favorite Ferrari is the 550 Maranello. Mainly thanks to NFS 3 (and High Stakes). While I could consider myself one of the 'younger' audiences - wherever the line between young and old may be - there is just something about the pre-2000's cars that make me go: Wow, I want one of those. They have charm, unique character, a proper manual gearbox, not too much electronics. A real drivers car, if you will. Mind you, I have not driven ANY Ferrari, but I'd much rather have a go in one of the classics than a new and hybrid one, even though they are faster. A Testarossa, F355, 550/575. That's my kind of Ferrari.

They’re definitely worth a go if you can ever rent one. I’ve rented a 360 F1 spyder and an F430 6 speed back when I got my quarterly bonus. I found the F430 to be easily the best car I’ve ever driven but it made me nervous in just the few days I had it as I was worried about it getting scratched and I actually hated the attention. I found myself driving it mostly late at night. I remember everyone trying to race me in it. The best memory I have is meeting an NSX on the interstate and driving at a high rate of speed with him for a good 10 miles

I watched a lot of videos talking about how bad these cars are, and for me, it's simply not true. I think it's a very fast car. I love how it handles and how it sounds. It's not great from a dead stop, but right after you get moving it can really accelerate. It's almost comparable to turbo lag. I have had offers to buy my 355 and have always declined. I recently had an offer of $130k. To me, it's one of the best sportscars ever.

I bought my 1995 F355 Spider in November 2022, and it was a dream come true. But, ultimately, these cars are incredibly finicky, even when sorted. Mine stranded me almost immediately, and it has cost me $8,000 in a couple of months, even after a thorough major service was performed before by a reputable shop with the prior owner. Your advice about having at least $10k liquid for emergency repairs is very apt, and I honestly feel that the car can’t be owned without that cushion. It does have its reputation for a reason, and some aspects are exaggerated, but most are not. For me, it’s sadly been a case of don’t meet your heroes as, despite its sound and looks, the constant fear of fragility is something that weighs on me every time I use it, even when it’s running properly, as it is now. I think you’re wise not to add it to the garage right now, given your other cars, and I honestly think F355s are like boats or planes - extremely cool, but best experienced when someone else is responsible for the maintenance. I suspect my journey with mine will be short-lived, but the highs have been very high. It delivers the Ferrari experience better than almost any other model, certainly within its price segment.

HI Jay, I want to point out one thing. I have 2017 audi a5 sportback 2.0l diesel. And numbers you are saying for maintaining that Ferrari are pretty cheap compared to my car, albeit I drive around 40 000km per year. In Croatia my timing belt at a dealer is 1100euros, per year on service I spend around 2000(tires every year 800, oil 2x 700 etc), plus because its under warranty bushes, electronic and other parts are about 2000 per year fixed by the dealer(control arm bushes last about 100 000km and you need to change whole arm which is 350eur x4). So It gives me really good confidence to get a aston or a ferrari after watching your videos, because costs arent that much. Oh yeah my front got a slight bump which cracked headlight bracket(2000eur was to fix).
@sultanoftippoo3857 Жыл бұрын
I hope many people see your post because many tend to focus on the cost of a cambelt change on an F355 but add that once every 4 year event to an annual service around £700, the F355 is no more expensive to maintain than any classic of the era (911 etc) or indeed a modern car like yours. Similar to you, I had a broken headlight on my 2010 BMW M3 and my local dealer wanted to charge £1,300 for a new one.

Good video and generally I agree with your review L, JayEmm. I'm delighted to see you are no longer referring to the F355Berlinetta as the 'GTB', a nomenclature that never existed. I would encourage you to seek out an F1 with a Stage 1 Capristo exhaust. That combination is utterly addictive and transformative. I think you would be impressed. Also worth a mention is the challenge grille which you had on your test car. To my eye, this looks amazing, but these days these are expensive and quite hard to find. One final note, I owned a 993 2s from the same year as my 355 (1997). It was the superior machine in almost every way, apart from looks and sound. It's the one I miss mostly. But the 355 is a thing of such beauty that she is almost impossible to resist. If you get the chance, do it...

It's the pinnacle, the perfect example of how speed isn't everything. This is Ferrari's best effort. I'd have it in a heart beat of any the new stuff. This video make me feel a little depressed as I will neve own one or drive one. Thanks for the video.

This is my childhood poster car. I grew up with a Clarkson video every Christmas, being around 5 or 6 years old watching him declare this as the greatest car of all time and in my opinion, this will always be my favourite. Especially of the attainable. Stunning cars

Childhood Poster Car - Jaguar XJ220 - not as loved as many of the mainstream supercars, but wow they were well ahead to my eyes.

My love for the F355 started with Sega's F355 Challenge arcade game. Now 30 years on, it's such a classice as it's the last with popup headlights and a profile that just looks right.

Iconic 😍 That V8 sound🎉 My childhood Ferrari was the 308 GTS because of Thomas Magnum🤣

The childhood "poster" car for me was a Ferrari 456 and a Lamborghini Diablo. I had toy cars of both and they were my favourites.

I remember seeing one years ago at a costco. Don't know what madlad was doing costco runs in a 355, but it was probably fun doing so. If I were to own a Ferarri, it'd be this. The noise, the driveability, and the way the car teaches you to work on it.

Also one of my favorite cares ever. As a Porsche 996.2 owner, I bought what I could get into many years ago. Its a track car now, but, would i have saved a few more bucks, this is what I would have bought. The sound, the character, the visual cue of modern classic lines are irreplicable by modern stuff. Another great review Jay, thank you.

I had a 288 GTO poster but since seeing the 355 and playing the Sega F355 Challenge game in the arcade and on the Dreamcast it's been my favourite 💜

Great review and content as always James. There is one correction though: the 993 Turbo is actually a much rarer car than the F355, with total production being at 5,937 vs 11,273 for the Ferrari.
@JayEmmOnCars Жыл бұрын
I get that, but for me I consider the turbo as part of the 993 family - which is definitely not rarer (albeit rare by 911 standards)

Social experiment: For me I had the Ferrari Testarossa on my bedroom wall, along with the Lamborghini Countach. I couldn't choose between the two though as they both had different charms. I also had a Porche 911 (heaven knows which varient) on my wall, but it second to the Ferrari & Lamborghini. For reference I was born in 1978 (45 years old/young). Love your channel mate, keep up the great work 👍.

I’m 40 and the child hood poster cars for me were the 308 and the Testarossa. I now have a carbed 308 GTB and couldn’t be happier. I love the 355 but if I bought something from that era it would be a 550 full stop, which is probably the most gorgeous car ever built.

I'm not sure about the Ferrari 355, I think I feel like a bit put off by how everyone says it's wonderful. But I like the advice you have to have a budget set aside for maintenance. I guess the thing is to put money aside in the "Ferrari account" each month so that; 1, regular servicing and consumables are covered; and 2, you've got money in the bank if (or more likely when) a big bill comes along. To be fair, I've found the same approach is just as helpful with a Fiesta. Although the sums of money are considerably less. And if you can't afford to put aside £1,000 a month (or whatever it needs), can you really afford the car?
@richardcarter1000 Жыл бұрын
Having run my F355 over 15 years, £2k a year average for maintenance will do it at Ferrari or a top specialist. If you're worried about a potential big bill, I'd leave some money, say £10k in an ISA. You may never spend it. Long term, certainly in my experience they've appreciated and many parts are becoming more reasonable as they're remanufactured

My hero car as a child was the 246 dino. I watched the pursuaders as a kid with Tony curtis driving one. So when I was in the position to buy one 18 years ago, they were 30k,but I bought a rosso barchetta 355 spider instead. Now 18 years later I still own it, and the 246 dinos are now 300k plus. So I missed that boat. However I am truly happy with my 355 spider😁 Another great video on the 35 jay🤗🤗

The last steel bodied Ferrari, mine suffered from rust in just 3 years, nothing serious but the kick plates on the sills were steel painted satin black with no primer. Water would get trapped underneath as they are attached by some small self tapping screws and partial adhesive bonding. The rust was between the bottom of the plate and the top of the sill, I bought composite replacement kick plates for mine, but it was almost impossible to remove the rusty ones due to the bond, they had to be removed with extreme force which destroyed them in the process. The red body paint was luckily undamaged, and I was able to add Vaseline to prevent water getting in again and refit the plates with the original screws. Being all steel this is a very heavy car. I would suggest the 360 is much much better, all aluminium, traction control, very powerful at low revs and totally usable in town, a 360 will outlast a 355 and cost much less to own and be a more enjoyable drive, Still going for sensible money, don't buy a Spyder or one with the F1 gearbox as it was well from perfected at this point, try reverse parking on an incline to be ridiculed by passers by when the temperature sensor on the clutch prevents you from going backwards any more.
