It’s still okay to feel bad about that, personally I’d love to have that kind of money to spend on the car because, if I’m being responsible, then it means I have more than enough to spend it on everything else. It’s like when people say yeah but if I make 100k a year instead of 50k a year I owe 3 times more in taxes than I did. Well yeah but you should want those problems. This is where you see the huge difference between Ferrari and Porsche. You can trash your Porker all day around Nürburgring and it will just say thank you, another lap, please? Where as a Ferrari would be lucky to last 1 lap. Ferraris look and sound much better, no contest there, but in every other aspect Porsche is miles ahead.

Great to see the Scud back with you! It always makes me chuckle when we buy an expensive car like this, any 'quality control' issues are written off as 'character' and 'unique personality', but the same issues in a basic Honda get labelled as 'crap quality from the company'.

Were the 430 Scud's basically 'hand-made', or has Ferrari implemented more of an automated 'assembly line' manufacturing system? The last 'factory tour' I saw seemed to indicate that each car was being worked on separately by groups of engineers who each assembled an entire car? Or do the put the cars on those 'wheel roller skates', and the each group of engineers assemble a specific aspect before rolling the car to the next 'crew'? One of the benefits of Mass Production is that the build quality is able to be 'perfected' and precisely repeated. Where with the Ferrari, someone probably just accidentally grabbed a couple longer bolts from the wrong pile, and couldn't be arsed to go back and replace them when he noticed they didn't quite fit...
@StreetPreacherr
@StreetPreacherr Жыл бұрын
The funny thing is that many 'luxury' items are actually 'inferior' to cheaper mass produced examples. Like a $5 Quartz 'Swatch' will be more accurate than a $500K Richard Mille mechanical/automatic watch! However at least with watches, the luxury brands are usually defined by their attention to manufacturing/finishing detail and material selection. While 'supercars' are appreciated for their appearance (from 10 feet away), and Performance (when they work).
@StreetPreacherr
@StreetPreacherr Жыл бұрын
Also, FERRARI just isn't the 'Top Of the Line' supercar where you should expect unmatched performance AND compulsive concern for flawless build quality/reliability... Ferraris are a RELATIVELY affordable 'supercar' that offer great performance (power/steering) and an enviable design (from 10 feet away), but aren't intended to feature things like exact panel gaps, impeccable paintwork or a complete lack of 'creaks/rattles/loose tail-lamps... If you want the WHOLE PACKAGE then it'll require graduating to something conceived to provide BOTH performance AND exemplary aesthetics, like maybe a Pagani or Bugatti. Of course it'll ALSO cost you a bit more than a rubbishly built, thrown together vehicle like a Scuderia.
@GM-fh5jp
@GM-fh5jp Жыл бұрын
The Scuderia is destined to appreciate in value like many of the other "special" series cars from Ferrari. I think you are doing the right thing. When things get tired or worn, replace them( while you can). Niggling problems detract from the joy of driving nice cars so it's worth it to keep it in tip top shape.

I think the problems are often the cars just sitting - this one only did 6000 miles in ten years, that is not good for a car
@habi0187
@habi0187 Жыл бұрын
The reason for the low mileage might be that Ferraris are famous for being not reliable and horrible painful on long distances. My old boss owned a Ferrari and a Mercedes AMG and always when he had to go for distances above 100 km especially when some Autobahn was included he used the AMG. The cars where approximately the same age and he sold the AMG with above 150.000 km while the Ferrari was about 20.000. Interesting is that the service costs for the Ferrari was quite the same as for the AMG despite the fact that the AMG ran 7 times the distance.

Hey James... Fellow 430 Scuderia owner here, great to watch and share your journey. I feel your service cost pain, I've been taking mine to a reputable specialist for years (have owned my Scud for 10 years) and each year the bills have just gotten bigger. To start they went from 3K to 4K 'acceptable' incremental increases, up to my last years bill of £17k!!! gulp! Am now at the difficult cross roads of maybe time to sell, as much as I love the car it's just not sustainable to swallow these costs. Keep saying to myself - one more year and am sure I've broken the back of what needs doing.. ...so maybe one more year to see where I am ;-) Trouble is, as you say they are just too good. They'll neve make another Ferrari like it again and for its price point (IMO) unmatched. Enjoy the car for as long as you can matey and keep up the good work on the channel.

Totally worth it mate, every screw/bolt/duct/trim peice has a job to do so if you plan to use the car properly everything has to be present and correct in good working order. It's a lot of money but try and find another example with all of that sorted...

Interesting review. Sorry you had to spend so much to make it right. I have a 09 16M Scuderia which I bought in 2010 with 600 miles on her. I have put 38,800 service free mikes on her, and at last years service still had 92% clutch life, which even the dealer couldn’t believe, but such is the fact. Other than an annual service and tires the car has cost me nothing. It’s my favorite of the three I own ( six speed 360, and a Speciale) hope to never sell it. Put another 280 miles on her yesterday. Anyway, my 2 cents. K. Lombino

Hi James recently done the split lower outter suspension joint gaiters and track rod end covers on my old Zafira. Parts were £3.19 with Free P&P and as Im not a motor mechanic took me 20 mins...Seems you are being taken for a ride in your own car but I bet the dealership make you feel very welcomed with a great coffee and a warm doughnut.

Crikey, those prices! This is the problem with deferred maintenance, it costs a bomb to put it all right again. Considering that the car came from a supercar dealer, this is shocking.

Regarding rear lights.. until recently I had a F430 coupe with the same issue. I bought a black Staedtler eraser from Amazon and cut it into small triangular wedges: stick one down the side of the light fixture and the body panel and it will hold it in place and stop it rattling. A good stopgap until you can get them fixed or replaced and means they wont shake loose and fall off (they are an expensive part as they are the same ones fitted to the Enzo)

Hi James, great content again! How much of that list of items would the £340 Main dealer 190-odd point inspection have picked up, do you reckon? I would always recommend having that inspection done, at the buyer's expense...including transportation to and from...and if buying from a main dealer, ask them for a copy of their own report following their own inspection. I guess that buying from a 'specialist' they might not agree to such an inspection, since the results give the buyer considerable leverage, but that can be handled as part of a negotiation prior. It's good to see such a great car being properly cared for, but it goes to prove that the old adage of setting aside £10k to £15k to rectify faults in an apparently 'sorted' used Ferrari is sound advice. Enjoy!

Took my AM Vantage for its service yesterday, oil and brake fluid change £770! They do an inspection where they found my car needed an extra work totaling £5800! Ive worked out i can do all the work they say is need for way under £1000. For example i have a stuck exhaust valve thats stuck open (what a shame lol) The repair a complete new rear box for £3000! Rear fog not working the repair a new rear light at £1100. Hate going there but when the time comes people want that stamp in the book.

I have an F1 F430, love it to death. Definitely peak analog, you feel so connected to the machine and is forever intoxicating to drive. I've driven a Scud on a track a few times and is a great machine, but the near double asking price is definitely a hard pill to swallow, even if you have the cash. That being said most F430's at this point are somewhat ropey, and some improvements can be made to get you closer to the Scud experience, at a fraction of the cost: 1) Fresh Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres with Scuderia alignment specs for sharper handling and steering feel 2) Exhaust Valve Remote for better sound under 4k rpms 3) Scud Inc F1 Relay for better shift quality 4) Fresh Acculmator and F1 Fluid change, also for improvement in shift quality I haven't done it, but you can also remove the triangle shaped sound insulation in firewall bulkheads for more in-cabin engine noise like Scud Note: getting a car with CCB will increase handling/suspension due to less unsprung weight over uneven road surfaces If you really want to go hardcore, you could also add 430 challenge engine mounts and lower car on stock suspension, but I'm happy with my more road biased set-up

I'd replace the tail lights with the Scuding Swiss versions. Much better quality than OEM, and half the price. I have them on mine, along with their LED conversion kit. You can always return it to OEM in less than an hour, but a great upgrade that retains the OEM lighting.

The key comment here is "when it IS done, it'll be perfect". Because it's such a highly tuned, delicate thing, it'll never be 'done'. It will always be waiting for the next massive bill to be paid, endlessly filling Ferrari's coffers. Quite clever of them really.

13:50 "You're doing road-legal speeds." My F430 is the only car I haven't gotten speeding citations in. Even in downtown Tokyo, it's so rewarding to just shift and brake as you meander through the canyons of glass and steel. The carbon fiber brakes are a bit touchy especially to release but having mastered it you're as smug as a cat owner whose cat only lets YOU pet it.

I would love to hear your impressions on manual swap vs original manual, on models that have both available like the 430, if you can get your hands on those. Personally the F430 Scuderia Spider with MT swap is the most appealing Ferrari to me. Except maybe for the 458 Speciale Aperta with a MT swap because I just found out they are doing swaps on those too now. I bet many owners consider or even want to do it but fear to ruin the experience and resale value.

Makes you want to keep it Auto gearboxes we’re never a thing I appreciated until I drove a friends 720s and I suddenly got it, a manual just isn’t quick enough to keep up and it was just too fast to think about changing gears with a stick.

What I like about you James, is that out of the ton of supercar youtube channels out there, yours feels grounded... I dont know if I am conveying things properly. Take triple F Collection guys for example. That channel is too much. It feels completely out of touch with reality. It feels more like "flexing" material rather than something "attainable". I am not judging, nor do I criticize. Just expressing what feels better for me. Sometimes "less" is more. This is a video where you mostly just talk about the issues that your car has. It feels intimate. It really makes you appreciate what it realistically means to truly own such a car. Very glad to bump on your channel back with the Roma review. Keep up the good work.

@Patryk Kaziow one of the 5 hoses that control the F1 gearbox went out and the hoses are $1200 each without labor and you have to replace all 5. I also just hit a large puddle of water that completely ripped off the bumper and diffuser. A new bumper is $12,000 without labor plus the cost of a diffuser

There is a pervasive attitude at present (and has been for quite a few years) about profiteering through the investing in cars. As your video shows the reality is it's very difficult to achieve - professionals do rune successful businesses but it's their day job and even they get caught out from time to time. So whilst I whole heartedly sympathise with your pocket emptying predicament I'm glad you've shared fully your experience as people need to go into these purchases with their eyes wide open and take a couple of reality pills before entering the dealership showroom. Incidentally, great choice the F430. A great Ferrari - along with the 612 - my favourite Ferraris of the modern ear.

I own a classic Ferrari Mondial 3.2 cabriolet. I’m glad you made the statement that you can either own one and maintain it and enjoy it or not. Yes there is an “F” tax on some parts and service, but the driving experience more than pays for itself. I am fortunate that I can perform most of my own service. It always needs something, but most used cars do. As a owner do your diligence to keep the vehicle maintained and drive it. A well driven Ferrari is much better to own than a garage queen. Cheers James and keep up the good work!

All good points but like all these expensive high grades, once the maintenance period runs out, they are got rid of like a hot potato and thus no investment value. The new buyers and owners don't know what a spanner is. Buy a Daytona, 512, 308, Mondial etc..

Whilst much was elective, I had a 355 for 4 years and drove it a lot. The average yearly costs on maintenance / paint (buttresses) … a stage 2 Capristo… were in excess of £8k. I could cope with that (just) but the intermittent issues with the engine eventually did it for me.
