In today's video, we look at the Ferrari 599 GTB. A car I have reviewed in the past and liked a lot - but didn't fall for. Over the last year it has grown on me though and today I think it could be something of a bargain - but I look to ask if there is a good reason why that might be.

Same as the Doug Demuro tax in the States. KZbinrs are like "why no cheap cars? Also, everyone should buy this car, but there's only 4000 for the whole world. Good luck!"

@@tbh1444 Ive come to hate Demuro in recent years because of this. But many other youtubers do this as well. Another thing I've noticed with car youtubers is, they dont really showcase them without heavy modifications or use them much once they buy them. They just make a quick intro video to them, shove them in a garage or shop, and just modify them every few videos. Then sell them. Or they talk them up to be a new collectable and why "YOU NEED TO BUY THESE NOW" ad then begin pumping up the markets. Its honestly becoming a serious issue for people who cant rush out and spent 10s of thousands every few months on random, unnoticed or unloved cars. We're seriously loosing our hobby and enjoyment. One of the channels I enjoy a lot now is Harry's Garage. He has videos and does series where he takes his personal classic and modern cars(Including some very pricey exotics) on long ass roadtrips around Europe. or he does a Jay Lenos Garage style format with cars. So many car KZbinrs only film their cars being driven for short periods of time around where they live or just to make an easy video, But never to give watchers a feel for what the cars are like or what they look like in the real world in public. The reasoning why is that driving and roadtrip videos don't pull in views like modification or Modified car reviews do. So they just relegate cars to being couped up, modified, sold and then buy another crowd pleaser. Rinse and repeat.

I love how so many car youtubers or Car experts talk about the 20-30 year depreciation curve for many cool cars, and especially luxury/exotic cars, Saying that this allows for people who arent insanely rich, But make pretty good money a chance to buy them used. Yet then are complicit in being part of destroying the depreciation curve of modern future classics along with Investors and guys trying to find the next market to try and skyrocket. Because from where I see it, The Depreciation curve that has existed for decades before things recoverd from the Great recession is has basically disappeared. This was even a thing before the Covid shortages(Which I think was the final nail in the coffin). Now all you can do is hope a car you want that isnt an exotic or some youtube icon stays unnoticed just long enough for you to possibly buy it and enjoy before youtubers, auctions and investors find it.

Love the flying buttress. Have driven my for now 4 years and I am very happy about it. Love the looks and love that it doesn’t look old compared to F12 or 812. Drive mostly in Germany when I am at home (don’t live there) and it is always a joy. Don’t think the stock exhaust is boring but rather exciting in its high pitch. Not cheap to maintain but I have a SL 600 (V12) at m home in US and that’s an expensive car as well. Once I am permanently back to Germany I may switch to 812 just to have a more modern car but still undecided. It feels amazing to drive a Ferrari.

I’ve been lucky enough to have had 4 Ferraris. I’ve had the 599 for 13 years and I’m unlikely to ever sell it. Covered over 40K miles mostly long journeys in Europe. Maintenance costs have been excellent and way less than the 355 and a lot of other "ordinary" cars. Only problems I have had relate not using it over winter ie sticking brake pistons; so now make sure it gets a run every couple of weeks when the weather allows. Think of it as a hugely comfortable, capable GT and you won’t go too wrong. F12 and 812 just aren’t as comfortable and have too sharp steering. Great review though and wouldn’t argue with anything other than comments on the rear view. It was the rear view that sold it to me when the covers came off on the launch night. Buy one! But not mine 😂

As someone who's been lucky enough to own a number of Ferraris and to have driven about 20 different models or so, the only one I haven't connected with was my friend's 599 HGTC. Seating position is too high, and for a 2 seater V12 you're just not that connected with it. Stonking, beautiful engine. Hugely capable. But ultimately a bit "meh" for me. Hard to know why. When I got back in, I bought a 550. That model always connects with me when I drive it and even after 75,000kms and 15 years of 550 ownership it still makes me smile. So nothing against the 599 (except humongous bills when the F1 gearbox rams in a gear and the synchros happen to be a bit off), it is just not quite the car for me. But of course at current prices it is a bargain and I wouldn't recommend against buying it. Just be aware of the gearbox issues. A lot of rebuilds happen and 25k bills are not unheard of.

Interested to know what those 20 cars you are comparing it with. I own one and I compared it with a 599 GTB, FF and Gt4 Lusso. The 599 HGTE I have actually excited me much more than those other cars I tested. Very poweful, raw, agile even considering it’s weight, and with a mechanical feel. I feel like more modern cars take that rawness away and older cars are not that powerful enough. The HGTE for me represents the sweet spot
@jazzyonno
@jazzyonno 2 жыл бұрын
@@EduardoA775 haven’t driven the other ones you mentioned. At the time of the HGTE test drive my UK friend and I swapped with my 458 in Eastern Germany for several hours. I really disagree with you that older cars are not powerful enough. When I had my 330GTC for a couple of days I joined my friends in the Swiss Alps. I had to learn to adapt my driving style but soon I had no trouble keeping up with my friends in modern machinery on the passes. For all conceivable practical road uses, 300bhp in a 1200 kg car is fine. In the MM Tributo I had this 1966 car at 135mph and drove it on the Imola and Fiorano tracks, lots of fun. Similarly my 365BB was a joy. Others I have driven are 330GT2+2, F12, F40, 308GT4, 308GTB, 328GTB, 328GTS, 458 Speciale, Mondial T, 512BB, F430, F430 Scuderia, 360 Modena, F355 GTS, 512BB, and a regular 599. In conclusion I would never describe a 599 as raw, unless it was a GTO. The contrast with my 458 was stark, and that was not even a Speciale. I did a swap with a regular 599 with a French friend and he agreed with that view. I am very happy you are happy with your car, and I don’t mean to offend at all. What I absolutely love about Ferrari is that all those models are very different to drive and each has a distinct personality. It takes time to pick your favourite (if you even have to). At the moment I am concentrating on building my pension and so I feel I should only have one; for me the jack-of-all-trades is the 550 Maranello. FWIW my UK friend sold his 599 and owns a 458 Spider now. Continue to enjoy your 599, and keep driving different models - who knows what you might find, all the best from Holland.

I've had my 575 for 8 years now and still love it. Sure, every year I consider changing up to a 599...initially I wasn't a fan of its design but I've come around. But I've heard stories about early cars wiring issues so that's a concern. And whilst it has the Enzo engine I just don't need more horses..515hp in the 575M is more than enough. There's no unlimited autobahns in Oz. Then there's the fact that 599s have jumped at least A$100k in the last year here. I still prefer the looks of the Maranello. It's a true classic with its 250/275/365 design elements. Who doesn't love twin rear lights. They only built just over 2,000 of the 575M, so its the rarest of all the modern V12s, other than the specials. And the F1 box is great once you get to know how to drive it. It's definitely not slow in manual mode. Yes, I've had to change the F1 pump and fit a new clutch, at 58,000 kms! And I've just put the car through the premium service at considerable cost. But I plan on keeping it until they won't let me drive anymore. Great review James, as always.

I always loved these because it looks like a bigger, badder 90's-era Japanese sports car and I love the general styling cues of those cars. And It just has a look and layout (aside from the tech) that suggests Ferrari actually wants you to daily the car. Which I like. I'm not in a position to own or really even drive Ferraris, I've only sat in a few at an Italian festival and been around tracks in a couple. So I can't speak from any real experience with the car. But aesthetically, it's one of my favorite ferraris

Being able to see a lot of the bonnet or hood as we call it in America is something I really appreciate because it I love being able to tell where the front of my car is. I currently drive a 2014 Volkswagen beetle. I love that car and it kicks ass when you put it in a sport mode and I know exactly where the front of my car is whenever I drive it and I can see enough of the bonnet/hood to make me feel comfortable, knowing exactly where the front of my car is. I really do appreciate that. That being said I do prefer to drive left hand drive cars because I am American and 99% of American cars are left hand drive but I do understand everything that was said about preferring the right hand drive in this video because this is a man from the UK and roast UK cars are right hand drive. I’m also not saying that I wouldn’t be opposed to a right hand drive car because I would love to try that but I would just personally my preference as an American preferred left hand drive. Ive seen a few in person and a few GTO's. They have never failed at impressing me style wise. these have always looked great ever since I was a Teen back in the late 2000s. I wouldnt mind having a go at one some day in the future. But with the way the car world is now and the fact that the 20-30 year depreciation curve has pretty much disappeared(not thanks entirely to Covid. Covid just was final nail in that coffin), I doubt I'll ever get a chance to experience one of these or a Murcie. By the time I get finish the degree I want(Which would pay north of 200k a year), These and many others will probably be well out of reach and a thing for billionaires or the upper echelon of Multi millionaires.

I must be old, but I have always thought exposed carbon fibre has a whiff of cheapness about it. I just can't get excited by carbon weave, and exposed carbon fibre, in bicycle world they have a term "steel is real" and I think an element of this applies to cars as well. Give me leather and brushed titanium over carbon any day of the week.
@kipp4805
@kipp4805 2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it may be a generational difference but I quite like exposed carbon. Granted, growing up in the 2000s, it was kinda the period when carbon fiber was starting to become far more common in exotics. there are high quality weaves and lower quality ones most definitely. The carbon fiber trim pieces in a mustang doesn't hold a candle to something like a Pagani where the whole body has a visible weave. The craftsmanship is really something to behold (although of course this is to be expected as I presume pagani's reputation is built on it's craftsmanship). It really depends on the manufacturing processes used. Especially in 90s and 2000s cars, before the process was really refined to be far more efficient by Toyota while developing the LFA, you can tell how much work went into creating some of these carbon fiber pieces. And of course I think theres something cool about the fact that we have managed to engineer materials that are simultaneously as strong and as light as carbon fiber with little detractors aside from manufacturing cost. I also think it's just intriguing to look at. Like art, you can stare at a carbon fiber weave or forged carbon for hours, noticing small details or variations that are unique to that piece. Of course, in the bike world I'd assume practicality tends to be an important factor. Exotic cars however are impractical as can be by nature. They're the perfect for showcasing the latest, most cutting edge technology available.
@Losang8
@Losang8 2 жыл бұрын
In reality, we only have carbon fiber bikes nowadays. From road to mountain bikes - all carbon. Steel is out, aluminum is there for entry level options, titanium for exotics. I do remember the first CF bikes which showed the weaving, but that’s long gone now and paint is covering it all.

@@wolfiestreet6899 interesting. Take a look online at the price of steel road bikes, steel has made a comeback. Aluminium is for middle priced bikes. A lot of leisure cyclists with money to spend (think dentists on bikes, weekend warriors) have returned to steel and also titanium. Aluminium is for mass produced Chinese bikes (no longer for high end bikes), and carbon while at the very top end of the market the best bike material (pros only now ride carbon). If you are a weekend warrior do you really need a pinarello dogma?. (Another saying in the bike world is "all the gear, but no idea).

This is one car, where when they first came out I didn't like them, but over the past few years I'm starting to like them more and more. It's mostly the front headlights I'm not keen on. But overall a very honest grand tourer, unlike other grand tourers that attempt to be a Swiss army knife and claim to be able to do everything (which just makes them compromised on long motorway drives). This is also a Ferrari, that imo surprisingly doesn't look good in red, because almost all Ferrari's look good in red, but not these imo.

Long long ago, in a time when I had some serious wonga; I had the use of a Ferarri 308GTB; to be honest, and much as I love these cars for their looks and noise - it put me off owning one for life! Mainly when the seller showed me the history and I realised how much had been spent just keeping it on the road. I imported a 1989 Nissan R32 GTR full race Skyline instead. I ran that car for two years with no problems; only selling for two reasons. 1. Although I never actually got a ticket; it really was a damn close thing....and 2. The sheer thickness of the ead of cash I was offered. (I won't say how much, but it was more than 5 times what I'd paid for it; and that made my eyes water!). Now that I'm old and comparitively poor; I own a very rapid 2006 Lexus GS300 SE-L, it's been looked after all its life by Lexus, they even did a high performance job on it for me. I'm about to take it off the road and just use it for track-days and speed trials; I'll replace it with an LS460 SE-L Executive. I just love a Lexus.

I have one of these. It’s a excellent car with great long distance comfort yet perfectly nimble on the twistier roads. I never understood why the car wasn’t more popular, but I am sure it will be soon as you’ve also found out. I won’t sell this car, it’s a keeper and since I only do 2km each summer in it, it’s just fine for what I need. Forget the back box exhaust mod, the sound deadening is in the redundant central cats. A 1h job to switch out for fabspeed decat pipes, more raspy sound and around 20 bhp more power. Typical problems are weeping cam cover rubber seals, shocks (you can get them rebuilt for 500 euros per corner in poland) and ball joints. Factor that in when buying, the rest is bulletproof.

Mine is red....which is too flashy for my tastes...and I've put close to 50000 miles on the car.... I replace both cheap plastic fuel pumps...one failed...so I replaced both.... two front shocks were replaced...and a fresh clutch just installed although I had a fair amount of clutch life left I was heading for a 5 day long high speed charity rally. The only time it has failed to proceed turned out to be a solution in the f1 gearbox... $400 all in parts and labor. Find a good honest independent mechanic... and these will run you similar to any v8 Mercedes or BMW in running costs....
