I've said this before, but I miss the days (long long ago) when Doug set up a camera and then drove by so we could see the car driving down the street. I'm not super old but at 47, I really miss old school gauges, buttons and switches. Would have loved to see this thing apply more vintage to the interior...like a 250 GTO but with a bit of a modern touch. And let's be honest, that engine is visual art. Not being able to open it up and see it is just insanity.
@ccelik97
@ccelik97 Жыл бұрын
Kinda agreed about the gauges vs screens thing. Even in the case of the economical, city cars etc I too think that the screens are overdone, yet poorly utilized. AR glasses/visors will eventually step in to fix it all of course (the jet pilot-esque approach), but until then it'll remain lame I guess.
@LMacNeill
@LMacNeill Жыл бұрын
Agreed -- I have to wonder how long those screens and touchy-parts will last. In 50 years will this car be completely unusable because those bits have all failed and cannot be replaced at any price? Heck -- will they even last 10 years?! You see these cars that *should* be classics in 20, 30, 40, 50 years, yet you wonder if these modern parts will hold up over time like the mechanical parts did from the '60s, '70s, '80s, etc.

A factor that often gets ignored is that touch controls are less safe on the road. With a regular old school tactile button I can operate most things in a vehicle I am familiar with just by feel, without even looking. I can find the relevant control in the crowd and never take my eyes off the road. With touch screen controls you don't have that. You must look at the touch sensitive surface to make sure you're hitting the right spot, you can't keep your fingertips on the surface in advance if you know you're not gonna need to press your control until a few seconds later, and if you're hovering in front of the screen without looking then you're likely to drift off the particular control you need. So you absolutely MUST take your eyes off the road whenever you need to do pretty much anything at all. That's a horrible trade-off just for a "fancy futuristic feel" and a few pennies saved in manufacture (touch panels are cheaper than buttons and switches when all's factored in, and maintenance on a touch panel is as simple as just swapping the whole unit out).
@ccelik97
@ccelik97 Жыл бұрын
@@PikkaBird I agree. I can't wait until the AR-assisted infotainment systems become a thing for the cars too so the in-vehicle controls have no other excuses left but to be made as *tactile buttons, switches & dials* only (and in small, concise numbers per focus area).

It certainly is drop-dead gorgeous, but --- as with other genuine supercars --- it serves as just another reminder of why it is actually _much_ harder to design a good modern market-competitive family car than it is to design supercars. How's that? Such family cars, being mass-produced and in a very competitive market, must be designed to specific price-points and _yet_ deliver everything that consumers (by and large) fully expect, e.g., good interior volume; convenient storage space; good mileage; latest safety and entertainment features; reasonably good handling; reliability; and visual appeal. In comparison, supercar designers are effectively given free rein to design their "dream" cars and pretty much regardless of any price-point that would limit the realization of their collective imaginations or staunch the use of expensive specialized high-end tech _or_ the makers' need to present a necessarily _exclusive_ product desirable enough for the Driver (no one else... just the Driver) to spend millions on. The result? Here's an example: The difficulty of even _entering_ the SP3; want to own a car with an out-of-this-world exterior? Then basic entrance (and forget about being able to easily exit in a bad enough crash) must fall by the wayside. (In more than one way, you pay for the look of the car.) Is it possible to design a supercar that also happens to do everything that a supercar does? Yes! But I doubt it would look anything like a "supercar". The closest thing to a supercar (performance) and yet being _amenable_ to introduction of the conveniences and expectations of a "typical" family car would be the Group B rally cars of the 1980s; boxy, much more utilitarian than sexy in appearance, but incredibly sturdy and fast, fast, fast.

To clarify the additional costs on the window sticker, that's generally for air freight. As I've had 2 cars delivered via air freight with Ferrari, that's where the cost of it is listed on the window sticker. Considering the price tag of 2.3m, I'd imagine they flew the car from Italy.

Fun fact. The most powerful engine that Ferrari installed in any car ever. That would be one of V10s from 2000's installed in F1 cars. they went to around 860bhp in a racing mode and close to 900bhp in qualifying mode. Nevertheless, having this engine with this output in Daytona SP3 is something that deserves a praise.

His reaction to the location of the engine's inlets (on top surface of thick doors and far forward of the engine) also indicates a miss by Doug: That exact same configuration was used on Ferrari's 1971-73 312PB. Its doors also flipped forward, revealing the air tunnels that were integral with the doors. I'm surprised he missed (or doesn't know) that bit of very relevant history.

I wouldn't want to drive it in public ever, anyone in an SUV will not be able to see your front turn signal and probably wreck you because they didn't know you were turning. 50 pts in the weekend category makes sense, but I think Doug's being generous giving it 6 in features for daily...I mean, other than the customizable digital gauge cluster, it doesn't have much.

Despite the low volume I respect Ferrari for putting such a big engine in to production. It is refreshing having a 12 in а world that goes 4 or none at all. As for it's design im on the opposite side of the spectrum. The curves are marvelous they're sexy but then everything else is just not all that appealing imo. To put it in to perspective i would compare it to a stock X-th gen Honda CiVic type R. Good attractive design but to make it sporty and edgy for the Type R they ran wild with the cuts and creases and all the extra detail that they forgot when to stop. But hey when it comes to cars usually the ugly ones are sought after the most. Lets see how many of these can survive for 10-20 years

Absolute work of art. And I really hope OEMs take note of the gauge cluster here so we can finally drop the cheap, lazy interiors with floating and/or enormous centre screens that are so prevalent nowadays. This interior is the perfect example of how you can have an actual classically beautiful designed dash with everything properly integrated, AND modern features. I need an ugly giant centre screen; just put it in a nice main cluster like this. A small slit screen in the middle for climate info like the EV6, or old VWs would be fine though; everything else should just be in the main cluster.

@pgr3290

No, that's called the limits of rear wheel drive traction. A C8 Z06 is nowhere compared to this when they are both above the initial traction limits. 0-200kph the Z06 takes 10.3 seconds. This does it in an absurd 7.4 seconds. Nearly 3 seconds faster. Completely different level above. And this isn't some mass produced plastic American car. It's a hand built Ferrari. Meaning in 10 years it'll probably be worth double what the lucky few paid for it brand new while the Corvette is worth less than half as much. Making the Ferrari quite a bargain.....
@namegoeshere2903
@namegoeshere2903 Жыл бұрын
@@pgr3290 see what you are saying on performance and exclusivity, however for an additional $2.3M those 3 seconds (to everyone except for those who actually will own one of this Ferraris heck most of us will never even see one in real life) would seem such a small performance/$ difference it doesn't really matter. Sure the C8 Z06 is not the same build quality/materials, but it's affordable and people won't be afraid to daily drive it..which makes the Z06 performance for the dollar a better deal no matter the time frame.

@@namegoeshere2903 If you can pay $2.5m for a car that'll be worth $5m in 10 years then you would. It's a $2.5m exotica limited run Ferrari with solid gold residual value and guaranteed classic status. No mass produced Corvette even figures in these calculations.
