It seems as though the old Necronomicon is not so rare a book as old H.P. would have us believe. All the characters are somehow familiar with it and have knowledge of its powers.

Necronomicon is in almost all HPL works and is a singular unifying factor to his writings. It is conceptually integral.

I think it's because most of his characters are scientists, scholars, or well educated people of some sort and the necronomicon was freely available at miscatonic

Pretty sure the creatures being described are nightgaunts. Who else thinks so? They seem to match all the descriptions.

Nightgaunts don't have faces and have smooth whaleskin. The creatures in this story are similar to the rotten ape things from The Rats in the Walls.

I have since changed my mind. They are shoggoths, and shoggoths are real. There is a phenomenon, known as globsters...
