This film weirdly predicted how the Berlin Wall would come down. At the end of the movie, Filipe literally says "farewell you sterile, graceless, concrete and asphalt monster" followed by "Ode to Joy" playing in celebration. This was the piece that Leonard Bernstein chose to mark the wall's collapse at a special Berlin concert on Christmas of 1989, changing the lyrics to "Ode to Freedom."

Dude not just Bulgarian animation, but the history of Soviet Animation is it's own extremely fascinating thing. Back in the day, Disney wasn't the disgusting conglomerate it is now, but Soviet Animation was developing its own thing and techniques that outclassed Disney in a lot of ways. Hayao Miyazaki famously said he wanted to give up animation but watched the Snow Queen from the 1950s and it inspired him to continue. If you're going to do a history of Bulgarian animation, it's best to do the history of Soviet animation.

Eisner and Katzenberg were against it, and set it up to fail, but that didn’t stop it from being a masterpiece of passion and inspiration. Speaking of Treasure Island, there was yet another Soviet cartoon from 1988 based off Treasure Island, and it was and is mostly known as one of the best Soviet cartoons at all, where one of the main stars for the fanbase David Livesey being a overwhelmingly positive doctor with the widest smile in the world. Despite being... closer to the original story of Treasure Island book, it has it's unique style, also very mesmerizing because at that time artists were trying hard to play with details, perspective and everything. It won't be such a fever dream and a cluster funker, because it's not trying to be trippy, but it's visuals are definitely as unique and not as cheap.

I love that old Bulgarian animations are getting some recognition in the west. Bulgarian animations from the time of Treasure Planet have a really similar style to it overall. "The adventures of Choko and Boko" for example was an animated series (also a comic book) about a frog and a stork that ran for a couple years on Bulgarian TV from the late 70's to early 90's. It's from the same artist, Rumen Petkov. The whole thing feels like a fever dream with its wacky animation, really similar to the one in Treasure Planet. I didn't grow up during that time period but I've watched the episodes on YT as a kid and I've grown to love this style of animation, despite it being really weird and sometimes even creepy.

I think the movie is Filipe's recounting of the events that happened prior to being trapped in the timeless void and while he remembers his own name, as time goes, on, his memory becomes distorted and how he recounts the events before being trapped in the timeless void change like the names of those he knew. Since the film starts on Filipe's narration, this is from his perspective and the ending is merely what he thinks happened after being trapped in the void: he doesn't actually know if the treasure made it back to Earth, but since he's trapped for eternity, does it really matter if he succeeded or not? There's no telling how many times Filipe has went through the story in his head, how many times its been distorted, or how much of it is even true in the first place.

As a Bulgarian, I'd LOVE for you to make a video on Bulgarian animation! (Definitely not biased) Bulgaria has simultaneously a severe lack of animators and yet not that much respect for the craft. I actually wanted to study animation but that didn't go to plan. There was a Kickstarter for a show, "The Golden Apple" which is based around Bulgarian mythology, you can find the eng dub trailer on KZbin. And now that I look into it, turns out they got a pilot episode a few months ago! I hope the project survives, because I'd love to see actual properly funded homegrown shows, I think that's going to be the first one!

Ooh, Eastern European animation from the 80's is a beast. Would be really cool if more people talked about it. This cartoon reminded me of another "Treasure island" adaptation, I believe it's Ukrainian, so basically the Soviet "Treasure Island". It's a certified banger with brilliant slapstick comedy and one of my favourite soundtracks out of any animated movie out there. It's also full of healthy lifestyle propaganda and the way it's inserted into the narrative... oh man. Have you ever seen pirates playing synths while running on treadmills to promote exercising regularly through a costumed live-action music video? Treasure Island is curious case - it was filmed in Kievnauchfilm, with team gathered from all over soviet union (or, rather, assigned to - you didn't have a lot of choice were you will be working). One of the lead actors was Armenian, and animation director was from Moscow. Majority of stuff, of course, was Ukrainian, but looking at Treasure Island as collective work of different regions and countries all across USSR gives it more credit, in my opinion

I'll give this movie this: I was never bored watching it. I wanted to keep watching just to see what insane shit they'd throw out next. I'm of the mind that the worst thing a piece of entertainment can be is boring, and this film was many things, but "boring" was not of them.

I think this movie has a very big "so bad it's good" reputation, which is how I felt when I first saw that famous intro fight clip. But upon looking into it further that'd be a damn shame if that's how most people feel. This is unironically so good because of how crazy and bizarre the animation and character interactions are. And it's different. I feel like modern animation is moving away from trying to be jarring for the sake of laughter and the expectations have gone along with it.

Two cartoons from the Soviet bloc I'd love to hear Saber's take on: 1) "Cat City" (Hungary, 1986): I honestly think it's a quite good movie, and the mix of anthro characters, violence, sexuality, etc. in a kids film (if a rather mature one) does feel on brand. 2) "Treasure Island" (USSR, 1988): since we're here, it's another interisting take on the classical work, this time a full blown comedy. If Saber watches the version with live-action musical segments, things would be even crazier, and therefore more interesting. I see many people are already recommending it here, so maybe he'll take notice and check it out.

If u think the animation style, it’s not that uncommon, it’s just like most old European animation looks (mostly eastern or Central European). As a Norwegian I remember really enjoying an amazing animated series called professor Balthazar, I always thought it was a Norwegian show but it’s actually Croatian. Norway’s pretty good at stop motion tho (really recommend the Flåklypa triology). I’d really recommend making videos on both Eastern European animation and Norwegian stop motion.

Yes, as a Croat, we watched Profesor Baltazar religiously on weekends and even in school, had children's picture books about it etc. So glad to see it saw a light of day even outside of Croatia, I never knew that it aired or was distributed in any way in other European countries

I would love to see someone cover Soviet animation in general, I grew up watching a LOT of it since I'm Russian and my parents grew up in the USSR. A lot of it is really beautiful and unique, I wish more people knew about it. Soyuz Multfilm (Союзмультфильм) was the main animation studio that produced these cartoons, I recommend checking some of them out!

This video made me realize how animation was really respected in the communist block. I familiar with Poland's animation and most of it is from that era polish classics like "bolek in lolek", "reksio", "mis uszaty" or "koziolek matolek" or the Czechoslovakia (I think) "pat and mat" the Soviet "Wilk I zajonc" (polish name). I love when you dive into more obscure animation. I'd love for you to make a video on polish animation as someone with polish parents and consider myself half polish I think it has a rich history to the extent that there are status of the characters all over Poland.

As an 80's kid from the Eastern Bloc I've seen my share of trippy cartoons. The one that really freaked me out was Tajemnica Szyfru Marabuta (Polish for "The Secret of Marabou Stork's Cipher") - in which the antagonist was a chameleon that could - instead of just changing colors - turn into things. Trees. Flowers. People. A lamp, even! Eep! That said, what little I'd seen by then of the western animation at the time sometimes turned the psychedelia up to 11, too. Elephants on Parade would haunt me for years.

Also remember that this was in the 80s when animation like this was still being refined, as Disney had a chokehold on it and the techniques used. So for Bulgaria to be able to make a movie like this is still impressive. It's definitely interesting to see how things looked in that time frame and compare to what it may look like now.

THANK YOU! I'm from Macedonia, now renamed North Macedonia as it said on your map, I watched this as a kid at the theater with my grandma then saw it on TV a couple times. Every time I'd talk about this movie asking people online if they remember a movie or anime or whatever it may have been about space, a black hole an evil pirate captain with a green parrot and how at the end animals and stuff fall down to earth from the sky NOBODY knows what the hell I'm talking about. Well now I know! I remember the movie being an absolute trip to watch first time I saw it, the synth atmosphere, the colors but I couldn't for the life of me remember the artstyle, somehow in my head I remembered the artstyle as something closer to anime like Macross even. This is amazing :D You single handedly solved one of the biggest mysteries from my early childhood! wow just wow That whole synth feel and soundtrack was big in our part of the world in the 80's, my dad worked in the entertainment business, he was a script writer for some tv shows here in Macedonia, directed some, produced others and the 80's stuff he worked on, even like historical shows would often use synth music. As a Commodore 64 kid myself that type of sound has a special place in my heart :)

Fun fact about the Nabucodonosor ship: The "Nabucco" is an Italian opera show written by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi in the 19th century about the exit of Hebrews from Babilonia ruled by the evil king Nabucodonosor. The characters here are singing the most famous song from that opera called "Va pensiero" about the longing for freedom of the Hebrews, thus they defeat the king Nabucodonosor. Really cool concept and lore if you think about it. Also totally delirious for this film as it should.
