My sisters art teacher once said “treasure plant failed because they put an absent father in the movie and people couldn’t handle it”. My father abandoned me and I also noticed growing up this was the only kids movie featuring the topic. The director really nailed the scene where he leaves for good.
@NJ.Magpie
@NJ.Magpie 2 жыл бұрын
That makes no sense that they criticize the movie because the father left, like in almost every Disney movie the mother is absent or dies so why did people judge it so harshly when Jim's father left? Doesn't make any sense to me, and yes, it was one of the saddest yet probably a very accurate representation of it. I wouldn't really know since my parents never left but I can see why people might find it relatable if they have experienced this.

One thing i loved about this film was the symbolism with Jim. Being when we first see an older Jim he wears black clothing and is rebellious, but working with John he starts wearing less darker clothes suggesting he is less rebellious and is changing, then at the end we see Jim in an all white captain suit and is happy. John became the father-figure Jim needed to live a happy life with a promising career
@mc.builder8267

I never noticed that, but you’re right. It’s also because John became his father figure that we got such a natural and organic change of heart from him, seeing him chose Jim over his life long dream. “Oooh, Damn me for a Blasted BOAT!!!”

@@thesurrealist8588 Villains are evil in their intentions and doings. Antagonists are an opposing force of any kind to the Protagonist, and they dont have to be necessarily evil. In a Sports movie, the opposing team is the antagonist, but they're not villains. Venom was not a villain in the movie Venom, he was the secondary Protagonist. Poor example. John starts out as a Villain, then he stops being one later in the movie.

@@zzodysseuszz it was because Treasure Planet was the most expensive animated film ever made. Could be that Disney didn't want future films to be that expensive because they were having a rough time in the 2000s and their last few theatrical feature films weren't making money (Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range lost money; Lilo and Stitch was an outlier). They saw how well Pixar was doing, and how DreamWorks struck gold with Shrek, so they thought CGI animation was the only money maker, and tried to make their own Shrek-like fairytale satire with Chicken Little, but clearly didn't understand why Shrek worked. Chicken Little made Disney money (also because they used it to showcase the newfangled Disney Digital 3D, which as we all know was an extra surcharge on tickets) after half a decade of losses, but reviews of the time and its current legacy are largely negative.

Really it's because it's based off of the classic literature novel "treasure island". Like it has the complexity of character of stuff they made you read in highschool like "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Maybe not quite as serious or as much as those books but still fairly close.

A little thing I would like to add regarding the songs, is one in particular: "I'm still here" was different in the French version and focused not on the fact that Jim was feeling lost due to the lack of a father figure he slowly recognized in John Silver, the French song "un homme libre" (= a free man), was instead focusing on Jim's growth as an adult through his desire to explore the world, making it a little more hopeful than the original version. Yes, this was a fun fact nobody will probably care about, but I still thought it was a nice little fact nonetheless!

If you like all the animation in this movie I’d recommend you’d look into it, there’s so much cool stuff that this pushed forward with most scenes using multiple types of animation. Even John’s animation was done with two different programs in every scene that he’s in.

If they had used the entirety of Atlantis's original screenplay/script, it would have been like 2 and a half hours long. They had to cut out a lot of the journey to Atlantis and a bunch of the creatures they would have encountered, such "squid bats" and "lava whales". You can find storyboards of some deleted scenes on the original special edition DVD release or on KZbin most likely.

One of the things I remember from this movie is when they're trying to escape the ship and Amelia has given Doppler a laser gun, and at one point he shoots a bunch of hanging barrels or something down and wipes out a group of pirates and Amelie asks if he meant to do that and he replies "You know what, I actually did!" but in like this surprised tone and it's hilarious. As an animation dork, I love this movie. Some of the CG hasn't aged well (the space whales) but the mixing of 2D and 3D animation is just stunning. The music is great, the animation is fantastic, and it just feels like an epic film.

@@zyourzgrandzmaz You just said "anyone over 20" as if Disney's target audience isn't predominantly children. Just because a old story is being remade for the newer generations doesn't mean that everyone knows what it's about. Let's use your highschool reading example. Imagine your teacher assigns your class a classic book to read that you haven't heard of before. You're excited to read it, when suddenly he just starts talking about major plot points. Sure, they might have been super familiar with the book, but you weren't. Now reading it for the first time won't have the same impact because now you know what most of the plot points are...

8:16 Ah yes, captain Amelia, helping to create the furry phenomenon. 8:58 [Blah doop] The dynamic between the protagonist and antagonist in this movie is better than most Disney movies. A good example of this is in the Disney musicals the hero has the "I want" song, and the villain has the "I am" song. In this movie, both the hero and villain are the same kind of person ("I am") and have the same "want" for treasure and adventure. The conflict between them and eventual resolution doesn't have the same one sided morality of the Disney renaissance animated musicals, but that doesn't detract from its quality.

I’d like to point out that at 14:22 Silver meets up with Jim not because he needs Jim to open the map but because he believes Jim has the map since he seemingly pulled it out of the pile of rope on the ship but it was actually Morph disguised as the map. So neither of them have it at this point but Jim knows it’s back in the ship and Silver thinks Jim has it.

This was one of the few Disney projects that succeeded in making a world that I'd actually want to live in. Everything about it was interesting, and made me want to know more. How did Flint find Treasure Planet in the first place? All this advanced technology and they're still using gold, gems and such as a currency? What are the planets these people come from like? Did Jim invent that solar surfer thing of his or is that a known sport and he just jury rigged his own? This movie deserved more than it got; I know I'd rather have a pet Morph than a Porg, that's for damn sure.

Just earlier today, as I was playing The Outer Worlds, I was reminded of this movie and thought how awesome it would be for more studios (whether film or video game) to explore this theme of space pirates. Though Outer Worlds doesn’t much, something about being the ‘Captain of the Unreliable’ makes me think how cool it would be to have a pirate-themed game set in space.
