In case anyone is wondering how this went, the abortion ban was lifted by national referendum 66.4% for, 33.6% against. 66.13% turnout. All but one county (Donegal) voted to repeal the 8th amendment.

jeanbchoi It's not murder, it's not a life yet! Abortion is usually performed in the first trimester. The pregnancy can be terminated up til near the end of the second trimester. Only in rare situations will anyone terminate a pregnancy later! If it's done, it's because going through with the pregnancy will cause severe trauma to the mother, (risk of dying, stillborn baby, in cases of incest or rape where the pregnancy has been discovered very late and/or the mother is very young). Look at it this way. Your life began when you're born and the umbilical cord was cut! That's the "magic" limit. A fetus becomes a baby when it can survive outside the womb - separated from the mother! - And even if we call it murder and pretend life begins much earlier, how can the inside of someone's body be seen as a acceptable place for another individual to occupy if not wanted? And the hardliners won't even accept abortion in cases of rape - imagine that, being forced to carry the product created by someone raping you!

Oh c'mon. I realize it's not "casual" because it's always a big decision that's very difficult to make. But let's say a woman accidentally gets pregnant twice inside of a couple months. Would she keep the second baby just so she isn't casually using abortion? No, the frequency of her abortions wouldn't affect the decision at all. That's not a factor. Women will have as many abortions as they need, regardless of the casualness of it.

Rambo Baggins If you'd like to argue it, it's a civil issue. Not moral or personal. We need abortion because it's good for the health of our civilization. It's not difficult to imagine - picture a situation where a young woman was primed and ready to become a productive member of society. But then she gets pregnant. The dad runs off. She isn't prepared. Looking at it from a civil perspective, we don't want this to happen. We don't need another orphan. We don't need another poor, single mother barely able to earn ends meat. What we do need is a smart young woman ready to be productive. Practically speaking, pro-life laws decrease the productivity of your civilization. Look to the middle East and see for yourself. The women do fuck-all compared to what they're capable of. And their civilization suffers for it. Are those babies lives more important that the whole civilization? Difficult question.

@ladynoluck
@ladynoluck 6 жыл бұрын
Krombopulos Michael. Well, you can have the baby and give it up for adoption; that's what is "holding me back" as you put it. If I ever had an unwanted pregnancy or a pregnancy in which I later found out I could not support the child financially or emotionally, I would use adoption services. In a severe situation where I might die or the circumstances of the conception are vile and criminal, I'd seriously consider abortion, but I would not be happy with making such a choice. I imagine most women who have an abortion also don't necessarily "want" an abortion either, but rather *need* one for their health, future, freedom, and/or happiness, and that is a need that they should be allowed to fulfill if needed. The reason I don't like abortions is because I see other options to it that I would be willing to take. That's not always the case for every woman, and that's fine and completely understandable. As for whether it's killing or not, I am a developmental researcher, so I know when the fetus is performing "infant-like" behavior. By that time, most doctors won't abort a fetus anyway, unless there is a medical emergency. So, I don't necessarily think abortion is killing, but I can still dislike the notion of stopping a potential person from existing. But none of this is my point at all, and you have a really skewed notion on what you think my beliefs are. Read my initial comment again, and maybe you'll catch the point you missed.

I've never had a partner who went through it with me, but I believe one went through it by herself, without telling me. I did have a partner almost exactly one year ago, who had me rush to a drugstore on the first day of 2020 to get her a day-after pill. Even that small act, obviously incomparable to an abortion, was serious enough to be forever imprinted on both our memories. And all this because of those religious freaks who apparently never had sex for fun, or had fun while having sex. Their whole idea goes against human nature. Mikey Look at the National Party channel. Justin Barrett regularly talks about the importance of political discourse and takes part in debates on RTE as well. He believes in bringing back the death penalty for murderers (like many he sees those who kill baby's for money as murderers) and rapists. That's nothing to do with opinions and everything to do with killing unborn baby's. "spewing hate" - you saw a few out of context clips each only about 2-4 words long and have determined that a man who lobbied in favour of gay marriage and called for more women to run for public office is "hateful". "No harm done" - actually there is. This clip is full of misinformation and exaggerations that are designed to give people a distorted view of what's going on here.

But I am NOT happy to give abortion to women so it could be used as another forum of contraception. For the women who use it that way, I would not call those women a "Baby-Killer" or a Murderer but, it is taking away a HUMAN life. Not even offering them a second chance.

Denying the transfusion would be a death sentence to you, but it is totally within their right. You can't ask women to give up bodily autonomy for a lump of cells. And condoms break. Birth control fails. Sex is natural and nothing to be ashamed of. There's no reason to not be having it. We should definitely encourage contraception but to tell people they shouldn't have sex is stupid. And won't work.

Yes, I value my own life above the potential future life of a clump of unconscious cells in my uterus, and therefore I SHOULDN'T HAVE CHILDREN, so if I somehow got pregnant despite being on the pill (my body is currently fully rejecting it and going through the cycles anyways), I would totally have an abortion, because I already have 2 small step-children and am pre-med. I'm glad we agree. BTW the difference between the lump of cells that may form in my uterus has no idea that it even exists, as opposed to a fully-formed human with consciousness. That's a pretty big difference. Plus everything Cycloptic said about autonomy, because fuck yeah to all that.

DeclaringPond 22 DeclaringPond 22 1. Fine. Make it your brother or your mother. Or some bloke in the next room. Doesn't matter. You can't legally force anybody to keep you alive. A person is a person under the law. A child's life is worth no more than an adults. And according to the law and also most medical professionals a fetus is not a person. 2. A fetus is a lump of cells and so is an adult human. But we're sentient/sapient beings that feel pain and have emotions. A zygote or fetus does not. 3. Are you really comparing rape to sex? Rape is not natural in our species. We are able to distinguish right from wrong and it's most definitely wrong. And I don't know about you, but rape isn't the way most people have sex. 4. Almost impossible doesn't matter. It still happens. People also sometimes get surgeries and they fail. You can't make a law that effects everybody because something is unlikely. That takes away the rights of those unlucky few people just because you want to punish people who may not have as good a reason. That's not how the law works.

Some information from the Guttmacher Institute about the subject: First, the number of abortions in the US have declined by more than half, with much of the decline after 2008. The reason for the decline is almost entirely due to increased use of birth control during this time.* Next, the number of abortions in the US have actually declined to levels below that of pre-Roe vs. Wade (the Guttmacher Institute shows an estimated 1 million abortions were performed each year from 1950 to 1973 before Roe vs. Wade, most illegal)**. That means that Americans today get fewer abortions than even their grandparents (or great grandparents did) in the 50's and 60's, and vastly fewer abortions than their parents did in the 1970's and 80's. Especially on a per-capita basis, as our population today is much larger. Studies that show the abortion rate was high even when abortion was illegal suggest that making abortion legal did not increase abortion levels by much, yet greatly reduced abortion-related deaths due to botched illegal abortions that were extremely common in the 1950's. Conversely, making abortion illegal likely leads to more abortions if not coupled with easy access to birth control and proper sex education. Still, even though abortions are rarer now than in your grandpa's day, about 24% of women will get an abortion before the age of 40. Of these women, about 60% will be between ages 20-30, and 12% will be teenagers. 59% are mothers to existing children. Studies also show that most women have reasons to have an abortion: Over 75% are low-income or living below the poverty level; with about 73% of women stating that they couldn't afford to have a (another) child. 48% cited relationship problems (such as an abusive partner or being a single mother). 38% said they already had children and couldn't raise another one. (average cost of raising a child to 18= $233,610) 34% said they were students and would have to drop out of school if they had a baby. (about 49% of women who get pregnant while studying never finish school) 13% cited health conditions that could prevent them from having a healthy baby or surviving a pregnancy. 1% cited rape, and 0.5% cited incest as a reason. Contrary to popular belief that women have abortions for "convenience", the vast majority do so due to financial inability and a lack of partner support. Another large portion do so out of a sense of responsibility towards children they already have. If you really want to reduce abortions, don't outlaw it. That only pushes up the number of illegal abortions. Instead, push for more access to birth control and policies that reduce poverty. Push for proper sex education, as states that teach abstinence-only education have teen birth rates and abortion rates 50% higher than properly educated states. In addition, studies have been done that show providing free birth control substantially reduces unplanned pregnancies and cuts abortion rates by about 62-78%. *note: from a high of 29.9 per 100,000 women to less than 14 per 100,000 in 2014; about 60% of the drop in abortions came from states that expanded birth control access during this time. Those who did not expand access saw little decrease. **note: these are Guttmacher's numbers, the Clergy Consultation Service did a survey of abortions from 1957 and estimated the number of abortions at around 2 million a year from 1957 to 1967 (I didn't use this source because they only surveyed Catholics, which resulted in a limited sample size).

I'm curious how you feel about child support. I completely get the statistic but the truth of the matter is that we are still weighing the value of a fetus or potential human against the hardship faced by pregnancies under less than ideal conditions. We want to allow women to choose to avoid any of these difficulties, but men have no option if the mother decides to keep it. If we allow the right to choose an abortion for financial or relationship reasons, men should have the right to choose if they pay child support for financial or relationship reasons...it goes both ways. If we want to legally force child support on any father, abortion should also not be a choice. Plus we always talk like its men's fault for not "keeping it in there pants" but seeing as only 1% claim rape, 99% of the women having abortions would appear to have had consensual sex while understanding the risk of getting pregnant. Personally, I am 100% for reasonable child support. No reasonable person having sex, male or female, can say they were unaware of how pregnancies happen. I'm sorry that unwanted pregnancies cause hardship, but the argument is not that no hardship exists but rather that the difficulty posed to the mother does not outweigh the value of the human life. At the end of the day it's about responsibility for actions..both for men and women, no one gets a pass. And I also don't understand the "access to birth control" issue...a box of condoms is not expensive nor difficult to find.

@@spencertressaadams8427 I also agree that there is a double standard between the right to choose and not having the right to choose about paying child support but I think a woman should always have the right to choose and the best solution is for the government to help subsidise child support for men who fall under the poverty line or who are unable to work e.g a disability

Some very good points here. I would however like to add that people (men and women!) also need to be educated on responsibility. If your life (relationship, finance, whatever) is so extremely fucked up that you feel a moral need to kill off your offspring preventively, you should also feel a moral need not to have (unprotected) sex until your shit is fixed. Men without jobs should not be having so much (unprotected) sex. Women in bad relationships should seek the help of councelers and human rights organisations (instead of abortion clinics) and hold off procreation until then. Get a life before you have a sex life. Sex comes with responsibility.

And the result of the referendum in May 2018 was....... The Yes side has won the referendum on whether to repeal the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits abortion, by 66.4 per cent to 33.6 per cent. The total valid poll was 2,153,613, with 1,429,981 in favour of repealing and 723,632 against. Turnout was 64.13 per cent. So the women of Ireland can now get an abortion in Ireland.

Ultimately it's about whether you believe abortion is right or wrong. Whatever your stance you can come up with lots of reasons to support it or be against it, for example: -Life begins at conception vs life begins a different gestational ages. -God states it is wrong vs there is no God. -If abortion remains illegal then many women will die because of 'backstreet abortions' vs preventing illegal abortions is not the right reason for introducing legal abortions. -A woman has a right to choose what happens to her own body vs the fetus has rights. What I find interesting is that when a pregnancy is planned and then there is a miscarriage - the fetus is mourned as a lost life. However in an unwanted pregnancy it is often not considered a life at all. Personally, through my job, I have spoken to many women who were about to have an abortion. I'll be honest - I certainly felt uneasy when many said it was their 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th etc abortion. When you are involved in the process, it definitely challenges your perspective on the issue. I have also looked after children born at 23weeks but are now healthy toddlers & preteens. That definitely challenged what I used to consider the status quo that 24weeks is when a fetus becomes 'viable'.

Emmarellda1 That's the point! Your particular opinion is that religion shouldn't affect the law. However there are many nations whose law is completely intertwined with a religion e.g. Sharia law & Islam. In fact the US constitution, although technically is separate from religion, was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. As I said it's all about your opinion / worldview. You believe religion & law should be separate but why should your opinion or belief system be more valid or 'right' that anybody else's?

Of course, it's a religious issue. Intelligent people are prepared to discuss the development of a foetus when discussing a termination time-frame, but the religious can't deal with that - they go to a predictable extreme and say "Never! Life starts at conception." Many Catholics go further and say it starts before that! Ireland is, at last, waking up...

According to the bible, it start when the baby is born, not earlier. Now, no abortion law permit that late abortion, usually the right ends when the fetus turns into a baby that can live on itself outside the womb, when it has lungs that can breath. There are more of a culture and the will of men to control women, not that much about religion. There are religious people that both agree that abortion are needed to be allowed, and that even perform the procedure as nurses and doctors. And to be clear, No One Are Happy About Abortions. But that is not alone a reason to ban abortion. Not before week 12 or something like that, before the fetus can survive outside the womb.
@VYDZ
@VYDZ 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndersJackson Researchers at Cambridge University, meanwhile, have kept a human embryo alive outside the body for 13 days using a mix of nutrients that mimic conditions in the womb. The embryo survived several days longer than previously observed and research only stopped because they were approaching the 14-day legal limit for the length of time an embryo can be kept in a lab. In other words, our ethics rather than our technology are now the limiting factor. The key to survival through ectogenesis is reproducing the conditions of the womb. As scientists become better at that, the gap between the longest time embryos can survive and the earliest time a foetus is viable will narrow. When the two timescales meet, we will have the technology for a complete external womb.

@@VYDZ interesting, any link to verify this? I don't believe anonymous people on YT without an references. Nothing personal. And even so, how about natural spontanious aborted fetuses? Shall we save those too? Especially when theological sources, The Bible, obviously don't think that until born, there is no human life worth punish for. And just because we as humans can, doesn't mean that we should do it. How long should a brain dead person be keept alive? When should the machines that support the corps turn of? When should the support of a fetus turn off? I would say that when a fetus/baby can survive on its own, when the lungs work, then we can start talking about a life. Not earlier. There are reasons that the body do spontanious abortion. And there are respons a woman doesn't want to have a baby. And the question to you are then, should pills and condoms and aöoke be allowed, under the cituation you claimed? Should wanking be considered abortion?
