Alcoholics are fighting to be sober. I talk about the fight to stay sober. The battle that it is to stay sober. But...what does fighting even mean? And is it actually harmful?

When you stop fighting and you surrender is when the real recovery, the real healing, starts. I have been "fighting" this thing called alcoholism/ addiction for all of my teenage and adult life. I've stopped fighting. I've accepted that what I am and I've surrendered. I wqs given the gift of ddesperation. Sounds like a shitty gift but it is truly a blessing in disguise. One day at a time I refuse to let my alcoholism control my life anymore. I am free.

Your words ring true about we’re not seen by others the way we want to be seen and that’s okay.its just good to be seen and be sober. Healthy or sober brings in contentment and happiness. At least for myself it does. Being aware and alive is real. It isn’t difficult to understand that and when I am sober thing just are the way their supposed to be.

Totally agree, it feeds into the illusion that we’re being deprived/ or in self deprivation / fomo etc. It’s St. Patrick’s day & I’m Irish, living in Ireland…feeling fomo today (2 years off alcohol in May 😊) Good podcast, keep going 👏☘️ ps. & you’re funny with it! Very well thought out & insightful…it’s clear you’ve done a LOT of self reflection & that’s hard work!! You’ve still got your sense of humour & an infectious laugh! Acceptance is something we ALL need to learn more of 😊 …if we’re ever to find inner peace! ✌️Namaste 🧘‍♀️

Thanks brotha. When I just stopped fighting and starting accepting, it has been less of a struggle and more of a new way of life.

So true ,for years I tried to quit smoking whist being afraid of being around others who smoked or giving into the cravings Then one day I thought,,if you want to smoke, smoke, instead of getting my knickers in a twist about it, 4 years later since that day I've not smoked and I can even be around people who smoke and not be tempted, it's a bloody miracle, the more i tried to fight it the harder it was, I got there in the end

My obsessive thoughts ruminant over and over until I can't fight them anymore and have to let them out on the person. It's been like this my whole life but has gotten worse since I got older and close family members have all died off. I have no one now except for the drink, wheels spinning at 42. I align with most everything you say. Idk, we'll see where I end up. I am a Christian though so I am thankful for that.

I hope my magic switch will switch over for good here soon cause that's really what it sounds like sometimes. I know it's the negative drunk in me dying for relationships lol. Just don't know how to get to the other side but hope and pray constantly for it. Peace bro!

I got to Know God through reading the Bible, then He gave me the Holy Spirit… this did two things for me, He helped me change my heart and mind about alcohol, and He was always with me, and still is, so I never felt alone or isolated. Getting sober and spending most my new free-time with God, has changed my life. God bless y’all❤️

I believe Jesus took the desire of drinking completely out and delivered me! Went from drinking (being called DB) to drinking from the rivers of living water. Titus 2:11-14 KJV For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

It shouldn't be a fight. You either recover or you don't. Instead of being a slave to your addiction you become a slave to your sobriety. Do some research on rational recovery and Jack Trimpey to learn more if you'd like. It guided me to save my own life.
