It’s important to mention that ‘Angst’ in German (Or Austrian German) means “Fear”, not the traditional angst we have in English.
@Onmysheet2 ай бұрын
It may spelt the same way as the English word. But the German word is pronounced differently.
@PoptartParasol2 ай бұрын
Well the A is pronounced differently.. But besides that it sounds pretty much exactly the same Instead of high *ehngst* like in english its a low "ahh"ngst.
@judeleese77832 ай бұрын
@@PoptartParasol I agree. I am British/English and live in Germany and the only difference will be in how the “A” is pronounced depending on whether American english “Ehh” as in “Ehngst” or “Ahngst” ( as in the South of England) or as I am from the North of England I would pronounce it exactly as a German would…”Angst” 👍
@tornoutlaw2 ай бұрын
When being semantically strict, Fear should be translated with "Furcht", which is an emotion directed against a specific threat. "Angst" is meant as an emotion directed towards a more general and diffuse existential threat. But you are not wrong, "Angst" nowadays is commonly used to mean Fear.

This movie is incredible. The lead actor is amazing, the atmosphere is thick as a steam bath, and some of the camera work is years ahead of its time. It took me decades to eventually track down a copy and watch it for myself (to anyone interested, there is/was a French Blu-Ray under the title "Schizophrenia", but only in German and French), and I was blown away. Angst is among the few movies which makes it completely impossible to not only empathise with a killer but ideally make the sane viewer question the appeal of depicting such minds. In peeling away the layers to show the skull beneath the skin, Angst firmly asserts that killers are revoluting. Their souls have blackened. To think and act in such a way is disgusting, wrong and absolutely to never be romanticised.
@adrianaslund86052 ай бұрын
There are shades of black. Some are like Edmund Kemper. Not someone who should ever be walking the streets(and he's pretty up front and transparent about that) but still an interesting case study. There's nothing romantic about it. It's just disregarding the individual traits and psychology of killers might not be the way to go for a nuanced view on human psychology in general. And in spotting the warning signs of a killer or paraphiliac before their personal problem becomes society's problem. There's probably more latent killers and sex criminals in the world than there are actual offenders. It's better if they stay that way.
@redblue51402 ай бұрын
Did we watch the same movie? His caregiver tried to kill him as a child, he was repeatedly abused, later he was also raped. Yes his soul has "blackened", that is why you should empathize with him and be thankful you didn't end up like that?
@Garbageman282 ай бұрын
@@redblue5140 excellent points! I think I can say I “sympathise” with him- what happened to him is appalling and no doubt pushed him over the edge into the viscous sadism machine we see in the film. but I don’t “empathise”. Maybe this is splitting hairs, but I think the processes of recognise how such treatment would fuck someone up, and the processes in which such treatment would *make them do it* are two very different (albeit similar) approaches. In fact the more I hear about his inner world, the more disconnected I feel from him. Maybe this is judgemental and a hangover of cultural impulses I’m not aware of, but that’s where I’m at after watching Angst. The films quite unusual in that his narration, imo, does not so much as sketch out his internal conflicts as show the audience how someone that far gone can *rationalise* their actions ad hoc. I am grateful what happened to him didn’t happen to me, but I’m more grateful that I do not feel the need to rationalise such wretched compulsions into a consistent internal logic. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this is an Austrian film.

I was a huge watcher and collector of controversial films, this one has one scene that has stuck with me in such a way that to this day 2 decades later I still remember the guttural feeling it evoked. Spoiler, if you haven't watched it. There is something so raw about showing him waking up caked in blood next to a corpse he defiled. It evokes this feeling of the aftermath of giving in to vile desires in a frenzy and having to look at what was done. The scene in Man Bites Dog after the killer gets the film crew to participate in the rape and murder is similar, but shows some regret. In Angst he keeps going in the cold light of day in an otherwise beautiful vista coated in the gore of his actions

Merely depicting a serial killer isn't enough to justify a book or movie. People want a STORY with some kind of resolved ending or clearly unresolved continuation (ie, cliffhanger). Just showing a guy stalking and killing... it's basically what John Carpenter's movie "Halloween" did which I still say sucks. But people always point to that as the start of "slasher" films. But there has to be some kind of plot or else you have nothing good. Just a freakshow that will be forgotten minutes later.

This has been on my to watch list for the last few years but now I've seen this review, its become clear to me that I've seen that guy eating those sausages before and blanked the rest out. I dont want to watch this again I think :) Great review, but I think I just relived something horrible :D

Is it terrible that I felt relief that the dog didn’t get hurt?

This is the branch of horror movies I have never understood in the terms of appeal.

the parts in this movie where he ravenously bites down a sausage really bother me, and not a lot of moments in movies bother me

I felt a little guilty when I laughed that the dog took the old lady's false teeth.

Imagine doing all that work on your film, blood, sweat and tears and spending millions of dollars only to have your film banned everywhere. Its like writing a novel and having everyone reject it.

These kinds of "horror movies" are the scariest kind. The classic slashers, paranormal horrors or sci fi horrors may be more brutal and have great jumpscares but are usually fun to watch because most of the stuff there is surreal. Movies like this and the Hostel for example are the scariest IMO because not only it is highly realistic but you can be 100% sure same shit happends somewhere IRL.

Never heard of this movie. Stumbled across this video a couple of hours ago. Got around 45 seconds into it before deciding this was something I wanted to see! Just finished watching the film! Not bad. Seen much worse - several times. Found myself swearing at the dude a few times. What a plum!

the villain was abused as a child by his own family. he wanted to inflict the same pain and suffering he had to go through as a child.
