Saw hammer guy well before finding the film. I was able to eat while watching A Serbian Film because of that. Had to stop at the baby scene to look up the behind the scenes before continuing but besides that, insane acting. Thats what holds the film up. The name along with the movie itself intends to represent an allegorical portrayal of political life in Serbia (some would say life in general). Except a few scenes I haven't actually watched the whole movie and find it disgusting. And as for the name, and as far as I am concerned, the director should be put behind bars. The political life in Serbia is indeed a clusterfuck but the life in general ain't that bad. It is not as good nor as bad as some places. Generally in the middle.

Hope you don't mind but i'll say the names in my native language since finding the perfect translation for each film would take like 30 minutes. Varljivo leto '68, Nacionalna klasa, Lepa Sela Lepo Gore, Ko to tamo peva?, Maratonci trce pocasni krug, Stado etc. There's also a croatian film that also deals with the topics all the balkans deal with so I personally like to think of all those movies as "ours" so check out Ustav Republike Hrvatske or The Constitution, the main actor is a Serb his name is Nebojiša Glogovac and this was his last role before he passed. Some may even describe him as the best actor coming from here. Hope this is a satisfying enough answer! Cheers

It was never formalized as a genre of its own, but "Eastsploitation" has been a thing for a long time (take for instance "Hostel") and A Serbian Film kind of brought all that to an end. The faux naturalism makes it horrible whereas in reality it's a meta-narrative about what people expects from Serbia and other former East Bloc territories. We the audience made this happen.

Serbia (and former Yugoslavia) were NEVER a part of Eastern block. Yugoslavia was a founder of a non alignment movement, officially a communist state but with a huge western influence. Soviet union was an enemy and actually if you said something favorable of Stalin you would end up in the prison for a long time (the dictatorship part). The rest was pretty usual, the first McDonald's in this part of the world was open in Belgrade (not in Athens for example),we had Ikea, weekly cheap direct flights to London, completely visa free, and etc. I don't know if you're like an American but no wonder the rest of the world thinks you people are retarded, uneducated at best. I will repeat, Yugoslavia therefore Serbia was never behind the iron curtain eastern block country. Ps. the director is a fat drug addicted pos and the main actor's son died of sids few years after he made this movie.

I think the existence of the film is fine, but I definitely feel like it's far too gratuitous for my tastes, I am not someone who is typically easily disturbed either, I watched Martyrs, Black Metal Veins, and Salo with minimal disgust, but when it comes to things involving harming children and infants, I am admittedly very weak stomached if there is any sort of visuals.

I feel the same way. Martyrs and Salo are great and they're one of my favorite movie. I like some of the disturbing movies because there lies a message that the director and the writer wanted to convey behind the disturbing theme. Honestly, I feel more disturbed when I watched Salo, but A Serbian Film felt like a cheap B-movie with nothing to offer but a gratuitous violence. It's boring through and through.

My humble opinion: a thing like a Serbian Film could only come out of a hopelessly traumatized mind. Ten years of infighting left a mark that is only possible to mitigate over multiple generations. I made the mistake to force myself to watch this movie from beginning to end and I didn't sleep well for weeks. I would add that it might be a way to criticize all foreign adult film industries, not only the west, but also middle east, Asia, etc. Child trafficking in Asia is one of the highest in the world. This disgusting film is universally hated in Serbia. The director of that abomination is a child of one man who made his money (a big money ) in the 90s in Serbia, and those were shady times for making money in ex-socialistic counties, especially Serbia. And that man with his shady money send his son to study "whatever" abroad and that child chose cinematography. The whole film is about his twisted despise toward the country in which he was born, the country as any other country, but he simply hated that he had connections with his country of birth, so he made the most despicable pile of manure, a hipe of b.s. and presented it as some kind of art, if not art, at least film that resembled French New Extremity. I am not Serbian, but I live in many places and I have many friends in Serbia, all of them feel ashamed and would like to meet that "director" in a dark alley. That businessman sent his son abroad to some fancy schools to study, and eventually, he became a director. He hates the fact that he is from Serbia and wanted to make a film in which he will present all the "madness" of the country that he hated. That is how this disgusting film was made, he wanted to show something that is far from the truth. In Serbia, there is no production of adult films and such depravity is not present, the worst thing were the Yugoslavian wars, but in any wars, there are disgusting things. I can not see how you were able to predict any of the final endings (too not spoil for others i will just say how they fool you into thinking it is over). Or the fact that Milos last act was what it ended up being. So i am curious as to what movies would you say are rather extreme in your eyes? i know Google will give you all the answers, but out of sportsmanship how about just list them honestly. First off, I wish to say that I really like this film. Looking at some films that came before it and almost all of our film made after it, this one had a shockingly good production overall. As for the NSFW scenes, perhaps I have become desensitized (although I don't know how, I haven't seen many such movies), but in my book, the rape scene from Irreversible alone is a milion times more horrifying experience than watching A Serbian film in its entirety. First of all, the baby rape scene was shot like the ear slice off scene from Reservoir Dogs - you know what's coming, but the framing thankfully denies the visuals leaving you (unfotunately) to listen to the cries and just imagine...it. Also, that scene is a film within a film, and Milos, our stand-in, interrupts its projection, clearly stating that the director of A Serbian Film knows we are against such attrocious and gratuitous violence. Other sex/rape scenes were not filmed in the vain of, say, Nyphomaniac nor do they last. Gory scenes were not shot in horror-film style. All in all, there is only one scene that I would describe as gut-wrenching. The point of the film, according to the director, is rather banal and I don't buy it, because if that had really been the point, I doubt he would have been denied an opportunity to shoot for such a long time since the film is not criticising the political establishment. But by having the main protagonist be an actor himself, of all the occupations, and that the villains are a film director and a film producer... to me at least clearly indicates that the underlying criticism is directed towards our deeply troubled domestic film industry. Now, upsetting THOSE PEOPLE will certainly get you banned for an unspecified amount of time.

(Full disclosure: I've not seen the film, only read about it) There was a phase of extreme shock cinema and I watched a few of them just because I like films. Irreversible, Lilya4ever, Martyrs, Raw, Baise Moi...etc...I've only seen parts of martyrs but Irreversible was a challenge to watch and I didn't watch Raw to the end. I have a pretty high tolerance for stuff like this but I always end up thinking why would anyone make this? And by this I mean, who think's up this shit then gets financing for it and then what is the audience it's intended for? I'm not offended by the content necessarily, as such, but I just get to thinking about the logistics of making a film with this content. There are a lot of amazing films that could be made about the hugely complicated Yugoslavian Civil war, but this isn't it. I dunno...I only watched Irreversible once and it's pretty much burned into my memory, so I guess it worked at being memorable but in fairness I also strongly remember the first time I watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves or Aladdin. I guess I just think it's unnecessarily provocative when a better story could be told, to be honest.

One of the problems with this film is that it attracts its audience by bad reputation and notoriety so even if it had something to say, many won't hear it over the sound of their own response to it. I tried to watch The Room because of its notoriety and I couldn't even get all the way through that so I'm not even gonna bother with this crap lol.

The Room...total shit. Frankly, I didn't think much of the editing of A Serbian Film, and the overall acting level was just okay. I will say this for it, the gratuitousness was so extreme it became funny, then it slowly but surely dimmed to dull, i.e., it got pretty boring, very predictable.

But yeah, it’s basically tries to do the salo/haneke thing of using confrontational imagery to draw attention to systematic injustice but mistakes transgression for commentary. It’s alright but you’re not going to get anything out of it if you’re looking for exploitation porn and isn’t worth getting involved with if you’re looking for a smart film. Maybe it means more if you’re Serbian but I didn’t get much out of it.

I watched it out of curiosity back when it was released, I had only seen the trailer and heard it was shocking. I had no idea how f'ed up it actually was. Truly messed up. I can't even say what happens. But I advise people to not watch it. It's not worth it. It's legit so disgusting.

Still hard to believe it was made in 2010, I was 15 when I watched it and had always avoided movies like that but it kind disensitezed me to them, after it I watched other similar movies and they ended up not causing much effect on me, except for psychologically shocking movies. I didn't liked the movie overall because it did felt edgy but I still remember some of the stuff on on it vividly, guess it got its job done then.

I would assume it's not 'Banned' in the traditional sense , but if made & owned by Disney studios they can shelve it & not issue it to anyone .....in the late 80s most Disney films on video could only be purchased on the Black Market ....as they wanted them kept for various cinema release occasions . DW Griffiths pro KKK epic 'Birth of the Nation' is available . Hitlers 'Mein Kampf' can be purchased & ' Triumph of the Will' freely available on dvd etc...

To be honest, A Serbian Film is…well, what it is, but I feel it was a disingenuous attempt of the director to portray his country as barbaric for shock value. I am not saying Serbia is a wonderful place but we got these kids too here in my country: rich daddy’s boys who lived a privileged life to get artsy portraying later the lower class as underdeveloped or disposable humans. The infuriating thing is that usually their own families perpetuate social disadvantages. Maybe in a meta sense, he is the one fucking the Serbian people…Sorry for being lame but I just have really strong feelings against these types of creators.

great exploration of a - not a masterpiece, by any means - but a really interesting failure, a sharp satire on Serbian society (but also, as you point out, it really hits many themes and is spot on, on its targets). The problem - it is well shot, acted, written and directed - resides on being too over the top, too graphic, for its own good. I understand it was to provoke a rejection from the audience, but it could have been done toning down a bit. I defended the film on a facebook group, many years ago, and one of the writers actually contacted me to thank me for my defense of the film's satyrical intentions, way far away from the torture porn genre that really doesn't go anywhere beyond mere shock value, as the Saw or Hostel franchises.

I first saw the uncensored "screener" copy of this. I've yet to see that particular cut even in the "uncensored" versions I've bought and ordered. They always still have that one particular scene cut out--but still label it as "uncensored." That being said, I didn't find this film to be at all disturbing or shocking. In fact, because the film was so over-the-top and ridiculous, I found it to be quite funny. This is what happens when you strive to catapult your ambitions so far over the line that it crosses the boundary and enters into the realm of absolute ridiculousness. All those nasty and depraved parts--I saw them coming a mile away and when they finally got to it I just found it funny. It was so obvious what the film maker was trying to do, I just couldn't take the movie seriously. Because it was so over-the-top, the director abandoned me. I couldn't connect with it in any serious way. A Serbian Film should be a prime example of how not to make a shocking movie: push the boundary; don't catapult yourself 40 miles over it.

Great review. This was such a conflicting movie for me. One I will never watch again. The acting, cinematograhy etc. was so good, yet the content went too far. It stayed with me for a very long time and even now, more then 12 years since i have seen it, still affects me. The scene that got me the most, was near the end when he violated his son. The sound... I can still hear it...

This is, without question, my favorite horror film of all time. The reason I place this film at such a high level is because it's the ONLY one that stunned me as much as it did. That ending, when put into context, is absolutely soul crushing. Even more so when you realize that such things actually happen. It scared the shit out of me, which is why I watch horror movies in the first place. I've seen all kinds of crazy, transgressive horror movies, things like the August Underground series, MDPOPE, Salo, etc. None of them fucked me up like this movie did. And it's absolutely gorgeous looking too. Well shot, great acting, really high quality. A technically sound film. I both love and hate this film all at the same time

@@lalopez1221 I both love and hate that film. I love it because in context, it's the only film to leave me as stunned as it did at the end. I hate it because it's so incredibly depressing and sad. Some say it's pretentious, and I can see a little bit of that. But overall, it's a technically amazing film in terms of shot selection, composition, lighting, etc. As a cinematographer myself I really appreciate how good it looks. And that, coupled with the sheer depravity of it really fucked me up lol

I remember when I watched A Serbian Film that I needed to go and sit somewhere else, that was not where the TV was that I saw the movie on, just to process what I had seen. I believe the movie is a great and effective piece of art and it delivers the message extremely well. My mind was racing with questions on what the situation in Serbia was which influenced a film like this, along with all the other questions the movie asks of us as the consumer. I have to admit, as offensive as this film is, I would have no issue in watching it again, unlike Salo 100 days of sodom and Irréversible, which I found to be more upsetting.
