Always handy to have a boy-scout on set (always be prepared), but after several years of working on numerous sets with high and low level experienced assistants, I began to notice a difference in working habits and attitudes - the more experienced AC's carried less gear on their body. It became more apparent when I would see a 2nd decked out like a walking hardware store and running around like a maniac, in contrast to a 2nd I met on a TV movie who said he had worked with some big name DP's. This guy was so cool and calm, and I asked him were was all his gear, and he said he doesn't carry anything but a scissors and grease pencil. I was amazed, but it impressed me enough to affect my own working habits, and I began carrying less crap as a 1st AC. Eventually I was down to a mag-light on a belt strap, a small pouch with scissors, pens, and minor lens cleaning supplies, and my data reference guide in my shirt pocket. Everything else lived in my front-box and ditty bag kept close by. I actually felt more relaxed and confident not concerning myself with having every possible tool available at an instant. I became so relaxed I started carrying a Time magazine in my rear pants pocket, to read between takes or long setups. Just a small part of on the job stress management.

hi! from a professional point of view - I would not use a microfiber to rub the marker. Imagine you are not there for a moment (toilet anything), you leave your belt and the operator needs to clear the lens, he finds the microfiber and uses it for the lens. I recommend a microfibre tape to the marker.

I wouldnt recommend to attach all that stuff with a heavy belt onto your belly as a go-to. I promise - you gonna feel that weight for sure after only a few hours of shooting. Better have only the small pouch with the most important stuff in and leave the heavy stuff like the gaffa tape on the camera cart. For most marks those small T-brackets are good enough.

Yes I think when you are just starting out you think you need all of this stuff, but over time you feel the weight and really don't need everything. We should update this video.

You should definitely have put links to the tapes, because I had no idea that type of gaffer tape was so hard to find. Cloth backed gaffer tape is not sold in most hardware shops in the UK, so if u could put some links that would be great!

Do they really use those low power PMR446 radios on sets? Or the higher power licensed professional walkie talkies? If showing a walkie talkie as part of the recommended kit, you really could do with explaining a bit more as the two types of radio are fairly expensive and not interchangeable.

That's cool. Alcohol is always the best for any electronics. On the last film we made, our 2nd AC had these disposable cleaning cloths which worked great. I also got told off for never cleaning my lenses.
