May I know why there is a difference in scoring with 4H for 450pts (5:04) and 420pts (4:20)? Thanks!

Hi. Thanks again for the question. I couldn’t find your 4:20 reference, but I think I understand the question. The difference between 4H scoring 420 points and 4H scoring 450 is the number of tricks made. In the first case you win 10 tricks and in the second you win 11 tricks. In both cases you make the contract, but the second one score an extra trick. This is called an overtrick because it is over what you need for the contract. I have made a video on the scoring system. It is in the Learn to Play Workshop playlist and is episode 3. The Workshop playlist is really designed to be watched after you have watched the entire Learn to Play series.

My mistake, its not 4:20. Its 6:40. Thanks for the explanation, understand now the additional 30 points are for the extra trick.@@jadbridge

Hi Jad, do you recommend memorizing all the rules; like how many HCP you need to bid 3H or 4H, etc.?

Hi Bridget. Eventually you will need to know all the points rules, but I have two suggestions for making this easier. First, memorize the ones you use most often first: opening the bidding, 1NT, responding to an opening. Second, try to group them into categories to make it less to remember: such as responding with 2 of a lower unbid suit, which is the same for all suits. Usual study methods like flash cards can be handy, especially if you have someone to use them to ask you questions. Overall, there is a system to the bidding and points needed for a bid, so that can also help. Good luck with all your Bridge.
