From the dev: Long word short, L + M is not in the game because it’s mostly unplayable. Liar and Multiple has an anti-synergy: In multiple, your major strategy is to figure out the possible gray + black combination, but liar breaks this strategy. By the meantime, multiple weakens liar by extending possible number range. This makes the combo lacking of information, painful and unplayable to an average player. (Believe it or not, the design principle is to create a logic game with high variance and still playable to an average player. I mean, 5*5 puzzles are already fun and logical. There’s no shame in playing easy difficulty in a game like this.) And Triple and Connect has a strong synergy: You need to draw a connected shape while avoiding rows of three. The only possible way to do this is turning at every place. Our puzzle generation algorithm avoids “unnecessary information” (that’s why the game is logical and tensional) and in such a strong rule set, almost all clues are unnecessary. This makes the combo lacking of information (in another way), painful and unplayable to an average player again. The same problem happens in almost every left + left combos and right + right combos. (Maybe you have noticed, left column focused on mine placement restrictions, while right column focused on alternative clues. Two rules from same side may conflict with each other.) Thus, we decided to disallow these combos in the main game. P.S. Tyler shouldn’t name this video “The Final Boss”. It's just a demo.
@Patashu2 жыл бұрын
Very interesting dev commentary!
@randomnobody6602 жыл бұрын
I don't see how lack of unnecessary information necessarily leads to the game being "logical" nor "tensional" (whatever that even means) thou. Figuring out what information is necessary can be a very logical process. In fact I think it could be more fun when there are multiple paths of progression rather than almost implicitly knowing any new information unlocked is most likely useful right now.
@Joseph1252 жыл бұрын
@@randomnobody660 I think the idea is that while not all the information is necessary, most of it can be useful. This leads to cases where you can get stuck with a line of logic, then have 2 or 3 easier lines of logic to use instead. Or it just means you don’t need the logic that goes really deep, making the game too easy for experienced players.
@eduardpeeterlemming2 жыл бұрын
Glad to know that the dev also enjoys these videos
@randomnobody6602 жыл бұрын
@@Joseph125 I'm not sure I follow. Those easier lines of logic don't have to resolve the harder one, they could be on separate branches that converge eventually. I also don't see why depth of logic needs to suffer. As far as I can tell this game rarely needs you to consider more than 3 mines so if it's a benefit it's not being used. If we compare this to a generic puzzle game like sudoku, it seems clear to me that sudoku can have patterns that require much more insight due to not giving away where to start, and also require more layers of thinking to solve.

@riluna36952 жыл бұрын
Now that's a fascinating thought. At first glance it seems to just reduce the amount of logical deductions you can make, so it might honestly be easier overall (basically every puzzle in that entire game requires a Mine Count-based solve at the end), but perhaps it will instead allow for logical combinations that are ONLY possible when you don't have the shortcut of knowing how many mines are left. I also noticed that any time you pick "Multiple" (with the two-count cells), it comes with an extra rule. [CC] Checkerboard. Implying that there may one day be different patterns of two-count cells.

@jamasa0072 жыл бұрын
Usually sudoku is on a 9x9 board and in minesweeper the maximum number is 8 so its probably pretty hard to make that work but if you knew how many mines and how many of every number there are it might be possible
@riluna36952 жыл бұрын
Actually I think this ruleset is brilliant. Size isn't an issue since this game is played from 5x5 to 8x8, and even 9 or higher wouldn't be a guaranteed problem because not every tile is a number. Mines wouldn't count against your tally. And the logic it allows could be unique and fascinating. You could theoretically force mines and safe tiles on the other side of the board. The trouble comes from the ? clues. Do they count as numbers or not? I think they have to, since the ruleset is primarily only effective on yet-unopened safe tiles. Logic like "this tile can't be safe because if it were it would be a 4, and there's already a 4 clue elsewhere on this row". And if one of the possibilites is "that clue is a ? tile and thus doesn't count as a double even though there's a 4 on the row and it has 4 mines", then all logic is lost completely. I personally would still love to see puzzles like this done, but I fully understand that to most people, this would be super confusing to keep track of and probably way too difficult compared to other rulesets. But that doesn't stop me from thinking it could be really fun to solve a few such puzzles for myself :D
