The only "perfect" playthrough of this series is your first playthrough when you know nothing, make mistakes, miss things and deal with the consequences. It's the only time one plays honestly without bias. It's always a journey and a fun one to watch others experience the first time.

That is so true. The notion that you have to do everything perfectly and make all the right decisions in order to fully enjoy the game is just crazy to me. Games like Mass Effect are purposefully built to give each player a unique experience, and making some decisions that you regret later or missing some of the content is absolutely an intended part of that experience.

No, I completely disagree. You're mixing up novelty factor and true satisfaction from your choices. Perfect pt in RPGs should be merited by - in layman's terms - player's level of "happiness". Imagine an unfortunate ME virgin who grew to love this superb cast of squadmates but accidentally kills Wrex on Virmire. Or Garrus during suicide mission. Or Tali on Rannoch. Or myriad of other options, whatever, because they didn't know better. In time they'll know they fucked up, whether by facing unpleasant consequences (hello Wreav) or just googling what they missed. And this persistent feeling of "Maaaan I wish I didn't click that" stays... unless they go again. Perfection's in the eye of beholder. Play however you want and whatever status quo of Mass Effect world brings you the most satisfaction *is* your perfect playthrough. Doesn't matter if it's your 1st one or 10th edit: don't even start about games like Cyberpunk 2077. Yeah, that my first playthrough full of bugs and glitches back in December 2020 was reeeeally perfect /s

Just starting your video, but I just wanted to say I'm glad this is just your own play through as you want to play it and you're not specifically trying for a "perfect" run. Don't stress not doing that side mission before Rannoch. You didn't know and the game doesn't tell you it's critical. That first time playing only happens once. There's always an opportunity to replay if you want to go back and see what you missed, and over the years I've replayed the trilogy countless times and I STILL find stuff I missed or different dialog from time to time. All I have to add is, "Best years of my life were spent on that ship. It's been a damn good ride."

I remember doing my first “perfect” play through, saving everyone you possibly can. It was probably my 8th or 9th full play through of the trilogy. Consequence is a vital part of the trilogy, I don’t think anyone’s first play through is their “perfect” one, and it’s always the one you remember the most. I always enjoy your playthroughs, because you make them entertaining. It's not about playing the game in the "ultimate way", unlocking all the rare scenes. It's about sharing some fun, and getting to see a new player experience it all for the first time. There is not right and wrong in a story, so, honestly, people who give you a hard time for your decisions in-game could honestly just take a step back and breathe a little. I think you provide something unique that already sets you apart from other streamers, so don't sweat the small stuff. Focus on what works and what makes you happy.

Dont know if anyone has mentioned it, or even cares, but Diana Allers (the reporter) was modeled and voice acted after a real journalist for ign website at the time. Was cool suprise for readers of the site and fans of Mass Effect. She didn't reveal it until the games release.

It took awhile for me to get used to not playing as a badass Commander, but the game has grown on me. I just finished ME3 and began Andromeda yesterday. I think what makes it so great is how it makes you think about humanity in general and technology as well ( how far it can go and how we're not too far away with AI being a thing now too). Kind of scary as well really. When I played it quite a while ago now I remember the ending being very devisive ( still is to this day I believe). The thing I remember most from my playthrough was me romancing Tali and somehow screwing it up so she died ( I was so upset I still don't remember how I managed to actually continue and finish the game in the end 😆). I don't remember what ending I got but I think you probably chose the more interesting option.

They rushed the original ending so much that you just assumed that your squad was dead since they basically disappeared, the original ending didn't have all the slides of what happened afterwards either so it was super vague about if they survived or not. I remember the Normandy also didn't pull away from the energy wave either and the engines popped which is why it was suddenly crashed on that random forest planet. They rushed the DLC to fix it and added in the evac, along with the slideshow about what happens afterwards and changed it so the whole Normandy thing was more ambiguous instead. This is what happens when the project leads decide on the ending without consulting the writers.

@@sechura3698The entire game was rushed out in only 2 years. They just wanted profit immediately and also wanted to push a micro transaction multiplayer mode as well. Major plot points being built up were stopped entirely like the Dark Energy plot. The idea that Reapers were all unique individuals that all looked completely different from each other, shown at the very end of ME2, was dropped and now everyone just looks exactly like Sovereign.

It is the thing Shepard and everyone else has been trying to do since the first game. EDI, Legion, the rest, would understand that their sacrifices was necessary to ensure the victory against the Reapers, despite how sad it'd be to lose them. Control is just a way of becoming Illusive Man, and Synthesis seems really bad. I say this because the player, as Shepard, makes a choice to force upon everyone a change that is so drastic that is wild. All of this without even asking them if they want to be affected or not hahah. So yeah, me personally would side with the High Point Destroy Ending.

The boy is the little boy who dies on Earth at the very start of ME3 while Shep is taking off. She saw him escape the building he was hiding in, make it to the marines and get aboard a departing ship, and then “BERM!” Reaper sounds and heart-rending music. Fuck, I love these games. Must have played most combinations but you’ve brought me yet more things I’ve never seen. Congrats on the finish. I do recommend Andromena (unpopular opinion), it’s very different. And recommend having a hunt for the trailer teaser for the next one, which allegedly ties the two together potentially.

Your first playthrough of this game was flawed, because it was authentic. You played the way you wanted to play, and you got to experience things that players who have been playing this game since 2012 have still yet to see on their own. That's incredibly special. You missed certain things that I would have loved getting to see your reaction to, but that's not a critique, I would much rather you experience the game in your own way than listen to backseat gamers the whole time in order to get an 'optimal' experience. That's what multiple playthroughs are for. EDI's monologue always cements for me that Synthesis is the best possible ending, and no one will ever convince me of anything different; I'm really glad you got to experience that. For the possible endings, there are many ways of "winning" the war and ending the cycles, mainly differing in how many casualties there are. Earth can end up devastated, or not. It's also possible to not win and the cycles will continue.

Your first play through should absolutely be your choices, mistakes and all. It is authentic. The 'perfect playthrough' comes later if you care about such things.

If the part with Shepard calling for a Normandy evac for Garrus and Liara seemed weird, it's because it was inserted into that section via the free Extended Cut DLC for the original game in order to fill a plot hole. In the original release of Mass Effect 3, the people in your squad were back on the Normandy at the end with no explanation even though they should've been either killed on the way to the beam or accompanying Shepard to the Citadel. I have a theory for why the Catalyst presented itself to Shepard as the child she had been dreaming about. Back when Shepard had that telepathic conversation with Leviathan, it presented itself to her as people who were fresh on her mind -- people she had recently interacted with. I think the same was true for the Catalyst. It probably read Shepard's mind and presented itself to her as the child whose death had been weighing so heavily on her subconscious. EDI was indeed voiced by "the chick from Battlestar Galactica" as you said. Very cool that they managed to get her for that role. This is the first time I've ever seen someone go for the Synthesis ending after destroying the Geth, and I noticed that it actually changes something in that ending. The line "...where organics no longer fear their synthetic creations" isn't in the Synthesis ending if the Geth are still alive. That was definitely EDI taking a dig at the Quarians. The ending I chose was Destroy, but I totally understand why you went for Synthesis. It's an attractive ending, and I really like the way things turn out for EDI in it. Anyway, I've really enjoyed your playthrough. You genuinely seem like a delightful person, and I look forward to whatever your next video game journey ends up being.

Glad to hear you kina agree with my take about the synthesis ending - you are making a decision to forcefully modify DNA of every sentient living in the galaxy without their permission, taking their free will and changing their life and the whole universe forever. Basing it on a short conversation with alien AI who you shouldn't even trust tbh. edit: Also, Illusive Man tried to control the Reapers and that was presented as a bad choice. Bad guy in ME1 at the end was half organic and half machine (kinda like synthesis). But what Shepard always wanted was to destroy the reapers. So I think that's the "canon" ending. Especially considering it's the only ending with a secret post credit cutscene. If I had to guess that's the ending they will pick for the next M.E. game.

Take Deus Ex franchise as an example. Choices at the end of ME3 are huge universe changing decisions. What you asking for is for them to make 3 completely different games with 3 completely different main story campaigns for the price of one. That's not how video games work. It's better for them to write a single good story than write 3 bad stories where they cut corners just to justify choices of some players from so many years ago. Take the synthesis ending. You can't write a good story from an ending where conflict simply cannot exist and everyone is happy and united. And even if you wanted to do that, you can't just slightly modify couple cutscenes and turn it into destroy or control ending. You would have to write 3 different games. Every ME fan accepted that fact years ago. And all the promotional material already points to that.

Played the game 19 times. Never opted for Control. Even though you can successfully control the Reapers, that was TIM’s method and I just never was in the mindset to side with him. My first and most paragon playthroughs are Synthesis endings. That is the nice ending. The last conversation with EDI does it. My Destroy endings are routed in two things. First, Anderson would want you to and he was the man. Second, is a minor spoiler so I won’t say here, but my Renegades tend to go that way. Great playthrough!!!

They are going to stay true to the goal all along, the only one they can really be certain of - wiping out the threat they first went out to end. And if it costs EDI and the Geth, and Legion, well -- that's what they signed up for and everyone knew sacrifices were going to be necessary.

I replay mass effect trilogy like once every 18 months because it's like LOTR but I miss what it was like to play it first the first time. At the end of the day viewers want to see reactions and you can't react to everything possible. And dont ever feel like you need to. but you can make your choices your own. Be proud of yourself. Thank you for a great playthrough. I played it 3 times and still you managed to hit corners I didn't get to. Two things about the ending: 1) I also chose this the 1st time, but mostly because I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND what was going on and I just walked straight without realizing there were other paths. The canon "best" option is destroy. This was always what you set out to do and this is also the only option with another short and important clip in the ending, which I will not spoil for you. 2) There is a fan theory that I LOVE - the indoctrination theory. There are hours of youtube vids about it and I recommend you check it out. What I love about it is that in addition to showing many pieces of evidence about Shepard being on a path to being indoctrinated, the most interesting point is that the PLAYER is being indoctrinated. Why else wouldn't you choose to destroy them? That's what you were working for for dozens of hours - why change your mind in the last 2 minutes? Because you were indoctrinated, and only if you resisted the indoctrination your would get the real best ending. I will comment that after YEARS of pleading from the fans - Bioware released a statement saying that no, there was no intended indoctrination, despite all the proof that people found in the game, however, they said they wished they would have thought about it, because it was better than the end they came up with...

In a way you have a rather amusing and ironic ending, normally if one kept the Geth around and went destruction they would all die...but you killed them all beforehand and in the end went with Synthesis something they would have loved so much since they first got sentience, 'Does this unit have a soul' the geth question that made the Quarians try to kill them. (and also the question Legion asks you before he gives his life to give the Geth freedom in ME3) XD

She’s possibly the first KZbinr who discovered the “organics no longer have to fear synthetics” line from EDIs voiceover since because the geth would be destroyed there’s no reason to chose synthesis over destroy and now the universe she formed has the hope that the quarians will rebuild the geth

Hey, I loved your playthrough! Definitely very different from most out there, but I liked it, I would say the chaos made it more dramatic and unique! I am definitely glad you didn´t savescum your way through the game! I am personally always torn between those endings, but I always end up going with Destroy, because even if it always feels awful to kill EDI and the geth, it´s the only one of the endings where you can know with certainty that the Reaper threat is ended for good. The third game especially keeps subtly reintroducing this question whether Shepard is ready to sacrifice anything to destroy the Reapers. This is then reinforced by the sacrifices of all the characters who gave their lives throughout the games so that the Reapers could be destroyed. So in my head, while choosing Destroy is the last thing I want to do, I also imagine that to Shepard, backing out at the last moment to settle for anything less would then feel like a betrayal of everything they´ve fought for this far. It also doesn´t help that the Starchild seems clearly biased and is hyping up synthesis way too much (the same Starchild that has thought the Reapers to be the ideal solution in the first place) and also it requires Shepard to blindly believe that they are not being indoctrinated (something the Illusive man clearly believed as well). It´s also a curious detail that the Destroy ending is the only one through which Shepard can live, given enough Military strenghth. So yeah, in my head cannon, Shepard being a soldier who came there to do one job won´t leave anything to chance at this point and ends the Reapers for good no matter the cost to make sure that everyone hasn´t died for nothing... and probably ends up being haunted for the rest of their life by the genocide they commited. Luckily, they have a few friends (and possibly a love interest) who are almost just as traumatized in Garrus, Liara and Tali, who could help them to possibly not completely lose it :D

Been a long ride, thank you for sharing it and I am glad you enjoyed it. I have to admit there were times I wanted to shout at the screen like someone at their football team, knowing full well it won't make a difference 😆 But I do get it that it is a first time playing and that you want to make your choices and stick by them, there are just two that I really wish would have done over but I blame Bioware more for them, I wish they made Shore leave dlc available later or explained it was a dlc and then the Rannoch one, you wanted to do the side mission and clicked on the priority mission, wish they made it that it said priority and that some missions won't be available after. That is one thing I differ from a lot of players, I live life every day, when I play a game if I don't like an out come or if a conversation choice is different form what it led you to believe I can change it unlike in life. Just some things for interest sake and if you play again, 57:05 - You actually decide if Javik lives or dies, you chose the one where he lives. 1:32:23 - After the second entry about EDI there is a conversation "He was wrong" that is pretty funny. 1:39:57 - There was another terminal could have interacted with, not end of the world, just some conversation. The Renegade trigger where you kill Kai Lang is more fun, the Paragon or doing nothing is pretty much the same if I remember correctly just a little more boring. I would also suggest listening more to conversations on the ship, especially the two engineers, they had some more conversation. 2:28:05 - that building next to Ashley has a terminal that you can talk to other crew members, once you go through the door to shoot the turret you can't go back there. I've watched many playthroughs of the ME trilogy on KZbin. By far, most choose the "destroy" ending because a) they feel that's what Shepard's original goal was, b) they don't feel right taking 'control' because it's what the EM wanted, or they just don't think any one person should have that kind of power, and c) they don't feel justified in imposing 'synthesis' on all life in the galaxy without their consent. Of those that don't choose destroy, all that I've watched chose synthesis. I don't think I've ever seen anyone choose control, unless it's because they went back through and viewed the different endings after choosing one of the others first. With the announcement of the "next Mass Effect", there has been a ton of speculation on whether Bioware will 'canonize' one of the three endings and, if so, which one. The trailer shows what appear to be dead Reapers which would indicate that, if any, it will be 'destroy'. If you're thinking of playing through Mass Effect: Andromeda, I'll just say that it's generally considered inferior to the trilogy, but I played through it and it kept my interest all the way through. I pretty much 100 percented it though there was one mission I couldn't complete due to an apparent bug.

Congrats Eralia! I just finished Mass Effect for the first time myself last year, and man this series has grabbed hold of me in a way that very few other games have. I finished my first playthrough, and now I’m on my fifth. There are so many choices you can make and so many things you can change. I’ve tried all of the endings (btw, there’s technically a 4th ending where you can reject all of the choices and walk away, and the reapers win and the cycles continue), and I don’t really like any of them, but the one that I usually pick is the destroy ending. I hate that it destroys the Geth (they’re probably my favorite race) and EDI, but I don’t like the other endings even more. I don’t like the synthesis ending because like you said Shepherd is forcing that decision on everyone else in the galaxy. I don’t like the control ending for the same reason. Whatever type of synthetic life form Shepherd becomes, she ends up being the sole person in control of the most powerful ships in the galaxy, so again, just like synthesis, she’s the one making decisions on what the reapers should and shouldn’t do, and not letting anyone else have a say. You were right btw, the voice of EDI is Tricia Helfer from Battlestar Galactica. Also the voice of Miranda is a famous actress named Yvonne Strahovsi, the Illusive Man is Martin Sheen, Joker is Seth Green, James is Freddie Prinze Jr., and the Stargazer at the end talking to the child about “The Shepherd” is none other than Buzz Aldrin. Lastly, they did release a trailer for the new Mass Effect game they are working on. It’s still years away, so it’s more of a hype trailer than anything else, but there are some interesting things they include that fans have been dissecting ever since if you want to watch it.

"Holy shit...she did it." As a huge Control stan, I’ve always believed that becoming the new Catalyst offers the best potential for a nuanced, long-term solution. With Shepard's experience and morality guiding the Reapers, there’s no reason synthesis couldn’t eventually be refined into an individual or consent-based process. It could be introduced as a choice rather than an imposed reality once the galaxy has recovered. Also, let’s be honest-if I were the Catalyst, I’d totally create my own Shepard Husk, upload a personality simulator, and live out my days as Robo-Shep. 😂

I tend to view both 'Control' and 'Synthesis' as a critical step in losing your will and becoming indoctrinated, as with TIM and Saren respectively. Leaving 'Destroy' being the only actual solution and everything else being a delusion that plays in your head. But even so, I have to admit knowing all the outcomes and presuming them all genuine that you are right. Control is all the upside with none of the downsides. But I can't stand a perfect ending like that in a series so thematically about choice, loss, and imperfect solutions. So personally, I choose to reject that interpretation on narrative grounds alone.

They help repair the damage that had been done to the galaxy and defend all life from threats while still remembering the sacrifices that made it possible. Control is also the only ending in which Shepard's overall morality standing has an effect on the future of the galaxy, which made it feel like I actually made an impact on the ending, unlike the other two endings where things just happen regardless of the player's previous actions. And I think you misunderstood what each option would do when you said that EDI and the geth would be gone if you would've chosen Control, because that only happens in the Destroy ending. I also chose Synthesis on my first ever playthrough, but it just doesn't sit right with me anymore. I know it's presented as the best option with harmony across the galaxy, but now I don't like the idea of altering the whole galaxy's DNA like that without their consent (and the glowing green eyes are creepy).

Well, Legion lives on as a part of all Geth, and that's quite a bit different from just 'dying' but yeah. With the choice she was presented, she probably chose the one she would have hated the least. That being said ... she did reload the suicide mission in ME2 to save Tali, so perhaps she ought to have chosen the Geth simply to get the proper 'ironman' result. Just a thought.
