The idea of F-14's blasting Zero's out of the sky, alas if only. Loved this film, particularly when Michael Sheen's character finally meets his boss, only to find it was the Naval Officer who was accidentally left behind in 1941, what an unusual twist for a film ending.

Left the Navy, my squadron (VA-82) and the USS Nimitz before the movie was made. I felt great pride when I saw the movie for the first time. It was exciting to see the last ship I was deployed on and my old squadron in a major motion picture! From A USS Nimitz plank-owner.

@@UltraEntertainment_Plush He didn't say he was a naval aviator, he served aboard the ship. With a crew of over 5,000, they were all there to support the mission, which is to project power to any point in the world. Most of the aircraft in this movie I refueled when I was a POL troop at Offutt AFB forty years ago. I remember the "U.S.S. NIMITZ" logo painted on the side of the A-6 Intruders, S3-A Vikings and, of course, F-14 Tomcats.

@@UltraEntertainment_Plush VA-82 was one of the two A-7E Corsair II squadrons embarked on the Nimitz at the time the film was made. Their aircraft are the ones with the blue markings seen in the movie. Their sister squadron, VA-86, was the one that had one of their aircraft land in the barricade shortly after they went through the first time storm.

First, Autoshopwing, Thank you for your service. Isn't it funny how movies inspire? Growing up in the 80's, I had two movies starring the F-14 inspiring me to serve. My fav of the pair is Final Countdown (far less Hollywood BS in my opinion). Similarly to your launching models from your bed, my older brother, and I flew our G.I.Joe Tomcats around our back yard on "patrol for bogies" At any rate, fast forward a few years, to my joining the Navy, and witnessing ALL of my childhood dreams unfold. My first command was with VF-101, an F-14 squadron out of NAS Oceana as an enlisted tech. Then after leaving the O-Level community to SOD with AIMD, I set sail with CVN-65 Enterprise, and finally CVN-68 USS NIMITZ! TWICE! While it's true that not everyone can bost what I can, that ALL of my boyhood dreams came to fruition, but mine did. Also true, there were some things that weren't so glamorous, but how often is it? To be clear, I took what I could get, and have no regrets, plenty of fond memories, and great acquaintances. I can even say I've taken two Cat Shots, granted, facing the back of the plane on a COD, but still! Granted, I only served for 14 years, HYT, but still I wouldn't change a thing. AT2 (AW)

The point of the movie (its argument) is that history can't be changed in major ways. We know from "real history" that the Nimitz was not built by a Tideman Enterprises, and that there was no Senator Chapman. So at least one iteration of time travel has already occurred with these two people. So who are the "engineers" behind the effort to change history? There are two that live permanently in both timelines (1941 and 1980) -- Cmdr. Owens / Mr. Tideman and Laurel Scott. The senator dies in each timeline, and actually never makes it to 1980. Lasky seems genuinely puzzled by things yet he seems like he has enough analysis ability to where Tidemen placing him on the ship could help Captain Yelland make the decision to prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor. That would cause a major change in history. How many iterations has this time warp already gone through? What created the seemingly natural electromagnetic storm and timed it to perfection? Tideman could have taken 1980 technology back to 1941 and leveraged it into creating a time travel machine that would create the storm to travel the ship back in history? Since the "storm" existed in both timelines and only the Nimitz made the trip, was there a "time machine" hidden somewhere in the Nimitz? Reachable by radio or programmed to execute at a certain time by someone? In any event, only tiny changes in history were able to occur. This matches some of the theories on time travel, that it would not be possible to make major changes in history. Of course who is to say that many iterations haven't already taken place, and that substantial changes in the original history haven't taken place? Maybe they will eventually prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor ... maybe in the next time travel iteration!!

Might had been better. In the movie most of the cuts were set wrong. Much of the brilliant story got lost that way. Back then there were BOOKS TO FILMS published. Was before the days of VIDEO CASSETTS and DVDs for everyone. So I had known that the storyline could have been brougt over better. For the book they had used an older, much better skript-draft. So when I was seeing the movie the first time after reading the book I had been so disappointed. The book should be still around on the second hand market or you even know someone having it in an old moving box or in a quiet corner on his/her bookshelf But the music was fine, yes.

This movie came out the same year I was born, and remains one of my favorites to this day. I even have a model of an F-14 Tomcat in the colors of the Jolly Rogers as seen in the movie.

Yup, same as I. My step-father was stationed in NAS Jacksonville, in squadron HS-9. He remembers the Iran hostage crisis when the Nimitz was at the "Gonzo Station", off the coast of Iran, in the Persian Gulf.

I remember when i was a kid and we watched this in local cinema. I mean in the 1980´s in occupied Czechoslovakia. We were occupied by soviets in the same uniforms they used in 1945 and we saw this movie. It was a ray of hope that the USA will beat the agressor for us.

I guess that in 80s you saw it on copyied VHS tape (like me), not in local cinema. This movie had an interesting fate in Czechoslovakia. This movie was officially bought. It was even translated (with subtitles) and promotional materials were printed. But then someone noticed that it actually promotes the US Navy, so it was not released. It circulated on VHS copies on black market. It came to the cinemas after the regime change in 1989. I think that first time I saw public screening was in summer cinema at 1990 or 1991. But ... I still have my VHS copy :).

@Peter A. we were grateful for liberation, but: USSR violated international treaty with Czechoslovakia and cut away part of Czechoslovakia. (podkarpatská Rus in 1944) that has never before been part of USSR. Ruthinians were forced by NKVD to vote for soviet anexion. I spoku to witness of that act. 2nd. despite the soviet-czech. act about 10 000 czechoslovak citizens were left to die or we can write murdered in NKVD soviet concentration camps during the 2WW. Whole factories were dismantled in the part of CSR liberated by soviets and moved to the USSR. f.eg. Vítkovice steelworks were moved to soviet Ukraine. and in 1985 my greatgranduncle saw it still standing in train wagons. Soviets stole it´s ally´s company and even didn´t used it. What a fucked state it was. 3rd. raping rally - thousands of czech and slovak girls were raped by soviet soldiers. Again I spoke to a witness (my grandmom) 4th with soviets the NKVD came, about 30 000 czechoslovak citizens were moved to USSR and murdered, f.eg. czechoslovak general Sergei Votsekhovsky. 5th there was no reason for soviet occupation in 1968, or tell me reason for moving almoust 500 000 troops with tanks and aircrafts to your loyal ally´s country, to shoot into the unarmed citizens and to shoot into the National Museum´s building. And now, thell me: Are you dumb, or paid by Putin?

That middle part, with the "spooky" sounding instrument, heard at the end of the movie. That part I remember when we went to the theater to see it always made me wonder about bizarre happenings and sci fi stuff. Very cool.

Gotta love the way all the "Old Salts" remember being at sea because of things like this! My time, 1991-2001 IC Electrician. My soundtrack was a little different. More Kenny Loggins and Roll Tide(Crimson Tide theme), but this one still holds a spot in my heart too. On my CG(cruiser), we used to have a little Hendrix as we did our breakaway. Good Times!!

The ending credits with this are the best! You see the men working the Flight Deck and know they are old veterans now. That said, I cruised aboard this "Fighting Lady" and many others over 30 years and "our" sailors today are doing the same thing today.

My grand uncle on my fraternal grandmother's side was at Pearl on December 7, 1941. He was in the army, Hickum Base. He was working on a half track. He used it for shelter twice. When he headed back to his barracks, it was gone. All of his buddies were obliterated. He told me his experience only once, and in person.

The Final Countdown is a fantastic story about an alternative history. The ending may be slightly disappointing, but there really was no other way. How the world would be different if the United States was ready to defend the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the end, however, the great storm actually accomplishes one thing. It brings Commander Owen and Ms. Scott together. Sure it was a huge cataclysmic event but it's only purpose was to bring those two individuals together. The rest of history remains safely unchanged.

+J. Conner A fantastic, Twilight Zone like story absolutly, but they should have followed the flow of the book. The cuts had been irratating. With a more skilled director and cutter this movie would have become much more sophisticated. I would have put the point more towards the Frame Story. The idea that the lost members turn up as the organizers of this time warp enterprise had been more interesting to me as the known historical advent which got stuffed more or less into the Story without sensebility. TIME TUNNEL and JAG did in this respect a much better job with their PEARL HARBOUR EVENT INTERPRETATION

'Yes back in those days when the movie got out it was a fashion to publish the scripts as book to the movie. This way I had known STAR WARS IV before I ever had the chance to see it in a cinema for example. Sometimes that had been very interesting because sometimes not the final one had been used for publishing as in the case. This gave you in interesting insight in the developing process because there were scenes in it never realized.

Served from October 1982 to January 1987 aboard the Nimitz. Hearing that song play over the flightdeck was the best part of Under weigh replenishment. I think they call it Replenishment at Sea now.

In the past few hours many things have happened; rumors of nuclear attacks and a third world war are totally untrue. We have no reason to believe that any aggression has been taken against our homes our families. I believe what we stumbled across is not man-made but a phenomena of nature, one that can't be explained. This phenomena is the storm in which the Nimitz went through less than 18 hours ago, the storm has had some effect on time as we know it, it created a portal, a door into another era. Today is December 7, 1941... I'm sure we are all aware of the significance of this date in this place in history. We are going to fight a battle that was lost before most of you were born. This time, with God's help, its going to be different... Good Luck.

I love this movie by itself but add the fantastic music and it's ecstasy (rapturous delight)! I ordered the CD today. I don't ordinarily pay $25 for a CD but this is worth it. Thank God for our military and especially the Navy. The men and women who daily defend our freedoms cannot be thanked enough. It's a shame that our freedoms are being pissed away by the Commander-in-Chief and his red minions and a brainless, ignorant and selfish electorate. May God have mercy on this nation!

When the title theme kicks down to 2/4 time and bass I always think the same thing when they do the long pan of the carrier. "U.S.S. Nimitz. CVAN-68. 1,100 feet long. 122,000 tons. 100+ aircraft. 6,000 men. Two nuclear reactors, 35 knots+. The most awesome engine of mobile destruction ever conceived by the mind of Man." Favorite movie of mine. Always wondered if Teidman's Wife, Laurel, had her hubby send Mr. Lasky on the trip so he would bring her dog, Charlie back. Always thought this might be the underlying plot. Remember Capt. Yelland talking to Lasky at the end..."You seem to have a forty year old dog on your hands!" Also, John Scott did all the music for the Jacques Cousteau television shows & specials.

Frankly, when I first saw this movie for the first time in 1980, I was upset that the US didn't take out the Japanese when they had the chance to. Decades later in my mid-50s, I still hold that position. Fellow officers were tasked in defending the homeland, not having the luxury of debating the quantum theories of time travel 😮.

The thing about changing history, theoretically, is that you change EVERYTHING, including many of the lives that brought-about what we have become, perhaps even preventing some people FROM existing. Don't fret about changing the past, learn from it, and prevent the same type of mistakes from being repeated in the future.

I saw this movie at Alexandria Mall in Alexandria, Louisiana in 1980 before shipping out in November 1980. When I was assigned to Uss John F. Kennedy CV-67 in Norfolk,Virginia,I saw the F-14 Tomcat. VF -11 Red Rippers and VF -31 Felix Tomcatter Squadrons. Now the new Ford class Aircraft carrier with the nuclear powered system is in use. Proud to have served as a Storekeeper Third Class Petty Officer. I would gladly do it all again as freedom is precious. Not every country has Western democracy. A privilege and honour to all presently serving. You are the heroes of this modern day! I choked up when Gene Simmons of Kiss proudly donates music ticket money to veterans who are injured and disabled. I later served in U.S. ARMY in Desert Storm. Thank you all for your service. Pray for President Donald Trump to return as he will forever back you and support you with military funding and ensure your veterans entitlements are protected against rogue politicians and their selfish ways as they are the ones who cut veterans services to pay for their retirements. By God's Grace President Donald Trump will return as Commander In Chief!

I loved this Movie, and still have a poster of the USS Nimitz that has the jolly roger F-14 Tomcats sitting on the deck. and I listen to this sound track when I work on my 1/200 scale USS Enterprise CVAN -65 kit. keeps me in the mood while I work on it.

Loved the movie. But, the most unbelievable scene to me was not the time travel, but the scene in which the admirals come aboard complaining about the carrier being lost in the Pacific Ocean, and Kirk Douglas chuckling lightheartedly about how they "won't believe it". Having served in the Marine Corps (and later, Army) myself, I know it would not have been a laughing matter-- at least 3 Marines were KIA, at least 2 helo flight crew KIA, one helicopter lost, and one Naval officer presumed lost. There would have been some serious trouble for the Captain, not a laughing matter at all, particularly his having to explain to the families what happened.... but then. in so many movies, the deaths of secondary characters are treated as incidental. Other than that, I liked the realism!

George you are right. You served in the Marines but both the story writer and the film director surely didn't. What you describe is a major problem and the carrier captain could loose all his medals and insignias. A US senator was also killed in the film as a normal event. It's just a movie.

well I don't think the navy going to have much trouble telling the family's they died in an unfortunate training accident, and yeah maybe the captain my loses his medals or maybe not because he did his very best in action and if u don't think that they wont believe him wait until they check the Russian trawlers radio report that it was sending to believe him plus the gun camera footage from the tomcats, also that senator was from the 40's and dies anyway they wouldn't care because he's not from there time.

Reminds me of the 'Outer Limits' show where 4 guys and a tank are transported back to Custer's Last Stand. They participated and their names were on the monument. The burning question in my mind... How could the Indians stand up to the firepower of a browning .30 cal machine gun? :)

Um, that was actually a Twilight Zone episode. "The Seventh is Made Up of Shadows". Definitely one of the eeriest episodes of the series. A nearly as eerie non-SfF/fantasy episode on the same subject was in the second season of Have Gun-Will Travel starring Richard Boone. The title is "Comanche", and concerns the only (real life) survivor of Custer's command.

This movie was awesome, I remember going out and getting a model of the Nimitz after seeing it... and always loved the music score. the only noticeable technical flaw was that A6M Zero's did Not have wing mounted machine guns. they sat side to side in a coaming in front of the cockpit canopy. So it does seem weird seeing the zero's using wing mounted guns when that is not where they are on the real plane

Classic theme to a classic movie. Weird thing is it was filmed 35 years ago - when in 1980 that was 35 years after WW2. So a remake would have a modern carrier going back to 1980! USS Reagan maybe so they could make loads of Reagan jokes...I was thinking though - there isn't as much of a gap between the F35 and the F-14 compared to the F-14 and Zeroes!

There wouldn't really have been anything for the USS Reagan to do, the way the USS Nimitz's air groups did. Even Operation El Dorado Canyon in 1986 (the bombing of Libya) only had one loss, an F-111 with its crew in our timeline. But F-35s would have been able to not only engage targets themselves, but designate for the Reagan's F/A-18s without being detected themselves. A an air-to-ground kill on Qadaffi could have happened.

Better than Top Gun 1 or 2. I know it sounds crazy but I've watched all three repeatedly and this one sticks the landing. It's more philosophical and interesting, with action too. A product of 70s anxiety and longing for a more heroic past.

Frankly, when I first saw this movie for the first time in 1980, I was upset that the US didn't take out the Japanese when they had the chance to. Decades later in my mid-50s, I still hold that position. Fellow officers were tasked in defending the homeland, not debate the quantum theories of time travel 😮.
