"I don't need a model, I have reality" No, Bev, it's not that you don't _need_ a model, it's that you don't _want_ to make model, because you know perfectly well that when you make a model you have to apply *all* your claims to it at the same time and your claims contradict themselves. If you were right about the flat earth then there would not be a single contradiction in there, the model would just work because it would be a representation of reality. If you were honest you'd build a model and accept that the contradicting claims cannot be true at the same time and find a solution for that. Of course, the globe side has already done that and found that the only solution that eplains it all without any contradictions is that the earth is a globe. You don't have to believe it, but you cannot be a decent person and also insist that you are right _and_ that you don't have any obligation to demonstrate that you are right.

@MrOttopants5 ай бұрын
69 miles is one degree of latitude. My guess about what he's getting at is that distances (A to B) are just measured, and they have nothing to do with the shape of Earth. They can't address the 1 degree of latitude per 69 miles (60 nautical miles) that happens on the globe. So they try hard to fudge it.

@@MrOttopants one degree of latitude is one NAUTICAL mile, measured on a sphere. But one degree is 69 statute miles, measured in his 'straight line'. I was actually intrigued how he was going to bring it into his argument

@@MrOttopants as part of the research into an essay I'm writing, I looked up definitions. Originally, the degree was going to be 50 miles, but it changed to 60. The key thing is that it is not a coincidence. Once they had decided upon 60 nautical miles per degree, the nautical mile was DEFINED to be that proportion of the pole-equator distance, in just the same way that one metre was one ten millionth of the distance from the North pole to the equator, through Paris, and during the era of Napoleon.

"How can you have an angle to a curve?" - Easy. Every point on a curve has a direction/orientation, which is in principle the tangent of the curve. The false dichotomy is assuming those two are the only options, and therefore nothing needs to be done to prove one if the other can be disproven. Flat earthers are denialists, and will falsely argue ad nauseam that what's known cannot be, but do not bother supporting their own assumptions (often deflecting with "do your own research"). Only one of them can explain any of what it's supposed to, like horizons and sunsets. The only virtue of the other is that it's not disproven when not looking much further than your nose. It was a reasonable early approximation (e.g. as a toddler), but we've refined the model many times since.

That seems like a common usage of "circle" from a long time ago. There are at least a few languages where that is the case. In the bible passage flerfs like to cite about god sitting above the circle of Earth, the Hebrew word (chug) is also translated as "circle" or "horizon", or even "world". In some places, it's translated as "sphere", but I like to stick with the others. I think what they were talking about when they said "circle" to refer to this place we live was essentially, "all that we can see". The circle of the horizon is essentially the boundaries of the world. I think it's possible the shape of the thing we live on wasn't even a question they understood, necessarily.
