I noticed that the song ends with the sounds of wind, waves, and seagulls. And seagulls are generally found by land, so despite the dreary ending they probably hit land.

They hit an island briefly, however they couldn’t stay, because by a couple weeks the starving crewmen had depleted the island of most of its resources to survive.

Heres what this song was inspired from. Essex was an American whaler from Nantucket, Massachusetts, which was launched in 1799. In 1820, while at sea in the southern Pacific Ocean under the command of Captain George Pollard Jr., she was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale. Stranded thousands of miles from the coast of South America with little food and water, the 20-man crew was forced to make for land in the ship's surviving whaleboats. The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation, and exposure on the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to eating the bodies of the crewmen who had died. When that proved insufficient, members of the crew drew lots to determine whom they would sacrifice so that the others could live. A total of seven crew members were cannibalized before the last of the eight survivors were rescued, more than three months after the sinking of the Essex. First mate Owen Chase and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson later wrote accounts of the ordeal. The tragedy attracted international attention and inspired Herman Melville to write his famous novel Moby-Dick. Source: Wikipedia. So yeah, whale hunting just got real.

Lyrics: I done my level best, to whomever’s concerned, For children of wailer’s, we all take a turn, Now we lay in our oars boat, us six men at sea, And travel for home with rations for three, Two ounces fresh water and hardtack a day, But we’ll see Nantucket again, Forty days and forty nights, we followed the wind, In the southern Pacific, many miles from land, The first mate of Essex, and few crew with me, Our captain George Pollard is lost at the sea, And I look to the East and see nothing but blue, So what can us starving men do? But sing, sing, we’re on our way home, Across the Pacific, and through the unknown, With God as our shepherd then no harm shall pass, We’ll be in Nantucket at last, But oh, how this skin of blistered leather pulls tight on our skulls, As rations all dwindle away, And oh, how our dreams every night, of our stomachs so full, But awake to find water to last two more days, Our spirits all broken, our minds are all crazed, And oh, how I’d kill for just one more good meal, But home’s a little farther away, So sing, sing, we’re on our way home, Across the Pacific, and through the unknown, With God as our shepherd then no harm shall pass, We’ll be in Nantucket at last, But oh, when I look at my crewman, I see them looking back at me, Humanity gone from their eyes, Once we were men of our god, and brothers at sea, Those times weren’t so long ago, but how quick they pass, Was once death a stranger, now approaching us fast, But we are Nantucket, the proud and the strong, For Nantucket, we must travel on, But oh, how these hunger pangs drive all the thoughts in my brain, And body dries up in the sun, Oh, cause it’s meat and fresh water that the six of us crave, So six bits of paper are tossed in the cap, And six men reach in and each pull out a scrap, And one man of six, with the unlucky draw, Is one man to help feed us all.

@Jackywhaler
@Jackywhaler 3 жыл бұрын
@@CarlsCozyCorner It was also really fuckin sad when this happened to them. Whales attacking the main ship were not heard of back then. The two onboard were terrified and did not know what to do while the whale rammed the ship and capsized it. Then....the remaining ships set out after salvaging what they can. A few weeks later, they were again attacked by, not a sperm whale, but an orca. They needed the food to last at least two months, and the only way to do that equally for everyone was by giving everyone 1/3rd of what the human body needs. Not to mention one of the three boats had their hardtack soaked with saltwater, giving them sodium poisoning (or hypernatremia if you want to get technical.). They were so dehydrated their vocal cords went raw from how much they talked about how dry their mouths were. The irony is that the closest islands had a British colony on them. They decided to stay away from there though because they feared cannibalism. The irony is just...it is too perfectly horrifying...they would have been saved all this torment and wouldn't have had to resort to what they feared if they had just risked the cannibals. Owen Chase only had to eat one crew member. Captain Pollard, on the other hand, ate six people. They were so desperate for food even after eating those bodies completely (starving bodies do not make for good meals whatsoever) they cracked open the bones of the dead to suck out the marrow to stay alive. When they were found, the captain of the ship (I think it was the Indie) wrote that they were found 'gnawing on the bones of their dead mess mates, which they were loath to part with'. The person they drew straws to kill and eat was Captain Pollard's young nephew. The person who had to kill him was his childhood best friend who was also on the boat. This is one of the most horrifying real-life stories ever. I know only few others that come close.

Nantucket, a tiny, isolated island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a summer destination with dune-backed beaches. It’s marked by unpainted cedar-shingled buildings, many surrounded by manicured privets. The wharves and cobble stoned streets of the Town of Nantucket are lined with restaurants, high-end boutiques and churches. The town’s Whaling Museum recounts the island’s role as a 19th-century whaling hub. This is copy paste from Google thanks for the likes

The Captain's boat had 4, one of which was his cousin who along with another crew member he had to eat. the first mate's crew ate 3, and the last boat had to eat 4 until they got to a small island where they ate birds, crabs, etc (two of their crew decided to stay and were later picked up and brought to Australia). In total, out of the 20 that survived the whale attack, there were 8 who made it back home.

This song is the reason I decided to read Moby Dick. So pretty much, the song's about the actual story of the Essex and cannibalism that ensued, and I found this out. I'm always one for some good true crime, so I dove down that rabbit hole. I then found out Moby Dick was largely based off the Essex, and I had to know if it was true. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how that happened.

This song is so beautiful and sad that every time I hear it I start tearing up. The story of whalers dying at sea. How they couldn't do anything but sing LITERALLY. How all they could do is try and have the hope to succeed. They had to suffer through storms, death of their friends, the INSANELY POWERFUL DRIVE to have a proper life once again at least for a day because they just were there dying slowly and painfully. They had to survive it all and eat their own friends and brethren. The sadness and beauty of this song is making me cry and I'm sad it doesn't have enough recognition. You should be thankful of what you eat and what you have because you don't need to eat your friends. I'M CRYINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
